Nemo may have an unexpected response to extreme heat: getting shorter. A 2025 field study found that wild clown anemonefish (Amphiprion percula) in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, sometimes shrank during a 2023 marine heatwave. Fish that shrank were more likely to survive the short-term heat-stress period, and breeding pairs did especially well when both partners changed size together.
That does not mean clownfish simply “lost weight,” or that all clownfish can shrink whenever an aquarium gets warm. The researchers measured a reduction in total body length, not just a thinner appearance, and they have not yet established exactly how the change happens.

What the clownfish study found
Researchers followed 134 wild clown anemonefish arranged in 67 breeding pairs in Kimbe Bay. The fish were measured once a month from February through August 2023, covering five lunar months and a period of marine heat stress. Temperature near each fish’s host anemone was recorded every four to six days.
Clownfish live in strict size-based social groups. The largest fish is the dominant female, the second-largest is the breeding male, and smaller fish occupy subordinate positions. In a breeding pair, maintaining the correct size relationship matters: a fish that suddenly becomes too large or too small relative to its partner could provoke conflict or threaten the group’s hierarchy.
Shrinking was common in the monitored population. The researchers recorded shrinking across 151 measurement intervals. At least one shrinking episode occurred in 71% of rank-one fish—the dominant individuals—and 79% of rank-two breeding males. A public summary of the research described the result more simply as 100 of the 134 monitored fish shrinking at some point during the study.

The central result was a survival association: fish that shrank were more likely to make it through the heat-stress event. The study reported that shrinking was linked to an increase in an individual’s chance of surviving of up to 78%.
That number should not be read as proof that shrinking alone caused the fish to survive. This was a repeated-measures field study, not a randomized experiment in which researchers assigned some fish to shrink. Size change may have been connected with other traits—such as health, social stability, access to food, or conditions at a particular anemone—that also affected survival.
Fish that shrank repeatedly had particularly favorable observed outcomes. The researchers also saw catch-up growth: after conditions improved, some individuals that had become shorter grew relatively quickly. That finding suggests a flexible body-size response rather than an irreversible developmental change, although the study did not establish the long-term costs or benefits.

The social twist: both partners may need to shrink
For clownfish, body size is not only a matter of individual biology. It is part of the social system.

Coordinated change could help the pair preserve the size relationship that keeps the group stable. If the dominant female and breeding male adjust together, neither fish is as likely to create a dangerous imbalance in the hierarchy.
This is why describing the result as an individual fish “choosing to get smaller” is misleading. The fish did not consciously decide to shrink, and the researchers did not show that they deliberately regulate their bodies. A more accurate description is that clownfish exhibited a flexible body-size response associated with heat stress and social conditions.
Why might being shorter help in hot water?
The precise mechanism remains unknown. The researchers proposed several possible explanations:
- Lower food requirements: a smaller body may need less energy to maintain itself when heat stress makes feeding more difficult.
- Lower oxygen demand: warmer water can make oxygen more limiting for aquatic animals. A smaller fish may require less oxygen overall or use it more efficiently.
- Social stability: coordinated size changes may reduce conflict, eviction, or disruption of breeding roles.
These are plausible explanations discussed around the study, not mechanisms demonstrated by the measurements. The researchers measured body length, survival, social rank, and local temperature; they did not directly show that a particular metabolic or oxygen-use process caused the fish to become shorter.
Shorter is not the same as thinner
The distinction matters. “Skinny clownfish” suggests loss of body mass, poor nutrition, or disease. This study’s headline observation was a reduction in total length. It did not establish whether the fish lost weight, changed the size of particular tissues, compressed part of their body structure, or used another physiological route to become shorter.

- The natural and detailed bark pattern resin hollow tree trunk ornament is great for nano beta fish and guppies.
- Made of durable resin material and natural brown colors are vivid and not washed out.
- Makes the tank look realistic and add much fun for the fish.
- There are 3 holes on the trunk fish decor, your lovely pet betta or other smaller fish would be super happy to go in and out the trunk cave to sleep, rest, hide, play, breed
- Measures 5.7" x 2.5" x 2.1" (L*W*H). Great for aquarium decorations, model making, terrarium, miniature garden and marine aquariums.
Until that mechanism is known, it is safest to say that the fish shrank in length or became shorter—not that they lost weight or were starving.
What this means for aquarium owners
This wild-fish study is not an aquarium-care recommendation. Owners should not try to make clownfish smaller, reduce feeding, or deliberately expose them to heat. Uncontrolled high temperatures can harm aquarium fish, invertebrates, beneficial microbes, and the equipment-dependent stability of a marine system.
For a home aquarium, the practical lesson is the opposite: avoid treating a fish’s unusual size change as a useful adaptation. A captive clownfish that becomes visibly thin, stops eating, hides, breathes rapidly, or changes length should be assessed for problems such as poor water quality, inadequate nutrition, disease, aggression, or inappropriate temperature. A marine-aquarium veterinarian or experienced reef professional can help distinguish a health problem from normal growth variation.

The Papua New Guinea observations involved a particular wild species, population, social environment, host-anemone relationship, and heatwave. They do not show that captive ocellaris clownfish, other Amphiprion species, or aquarium fish in general respond in the same way.
A response that may buy time—not solve the climate problem
The clownfish were living through the fourth global coral-bleaching event. NOAA confirmed that event in April 2024. Its status reporting later indicated that bleaching-level heat stress affected about 84.4% of the world’s coral-reef area between January 1, 2023, and September 30, 2025, describing it as the largest global bleaching event recorded to that point.
Clown anemonefish depend on host anemones for shelter. The relationship is mutual: the anemone protects the fish, while the fish can provide services including oxygenation, nutrients, and defense from predators. Heat stress can damage that partnership when anemones bleach, decline, or die.

A separate study from the central Red Sea illustrates the wider risk, although it involved a different region, species, and study design. During the 2023 heat event, all tagged host anemones in that study bleached. By May 2024, approximately 78.5% had died, and researchers detected only seven of the original 168 monitored anemonefish. Those numbers cannot be transferred directly to Kimbe Bay, but they show why an individual fish’s ability to become shorter is not a complete defense against reef warming.
Could shrinking explain why fish are getting smaller?
Possibly, but that remains a hypothesis. Scientists have reported declines in average body size in some ocean populations, and flexible shrinking could contribute to such patterns if similar responses occur widely and repeatedly across species.
The clownfish study alone cannot establish that. It followed one species, one population, and one heatwave. Researchers still need to determine whether other fish can make the same adjustment, how the body changes length, whether shrinking affects fertility or offspring, and what happens when heat stress lasts longer or occurs repeatedly.
There may also be costs. Smaller fish can be more vulnerable to predators and may have less reproductive capacity. A body-size change that improves short-term survival could therefore carry longer-term consequences for breeding pairs and reef populations.

Wild clown anemonefish in Kimbe Bay showed an unusual form of flexibility: many became physically shorter during a marine heatwave, and shrinking was associated with better short-term survival. Breeding partners appeared to benefit when they adjusted together, preserving the size-based social order that governs clownfish groups.
But the finding is not a license to call the response weight loss, claim that clownfish consciously shrink, or assume it protects reefs from climate change. It is one promising survival response observed under one set of conditions—and a reminder that even an adaptable fish still depends on a healthy host anemone and a functioning reef.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did the clownfish lose weight when they shrank?
No. The study measured reductions in total body length, not simply weight loss. Researchers have not yet established exactly how the fish became shorter.
Can all clownfish shrink to survive hot water?
No. The research involved 134 wild clown anemonefish in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, during one 2023 heatwave. It does not show that all clownfish, aquarium fish, or other fish species can shrink in the same way.
Should I try to make my aquarium clownfish shrink during a heatwave?
No. Aquarium owners should not deliberately heat a tank, reduce feeding, or try to make a fish smaller. High temperatures can cause serious aquarium-health problems. The study describes a wild response; it is not a care technique.

Did shrinking definitely save the clownfish?
The researchers observed that fish that shrank had better short-term survival outcomes, with the study reporting an increase of up to 78% in observed survival chance. Because the work was observational, it does not prove that shrinking alone caused survival.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A field study of 134 wild clown anemonefish in Papua New Guinea found that many became shorter during the 2023 marine heatwave, and shrinking was associated with improved short-term survival. The mechanism is not yet known, the result is not proof of causation, and it should not be turned into aquarium advice or confused with simple weight loss.
