They need moderate daily activity, weight management, frequent wrinkle checks, heat precautions, and attention to breathing.
Frenchies can adapt to apartment living and many family homes, but they are not a no-exercise or no-maintenance breed. Plan for daily enrichment and routine veterinary care, and never leave one unattended near water.

French Bulldog temperament and behavior
Most Frenchies want to be close to their people. They are often playful and sociable, and many adapt well to singles, couples, families, and smaller homes. They may get along with children, dogs, and other pets, but compatibility depends on the individual dog and the quality of introductions.

Supervise interactions with children and unfamiliar animals. A child should learn not to climb on, hug tightly, disturb, or carry the dog. Give the Frenchie a quiet place to retreat, and introduce other pets gradually rather than putting them together and hoping they work it out.
French Bulldogs are intelligent, but intelligence does not always translate into eager obedience. Stubbornness, distraction, or a sudden loss of interest can appear during training. Short, reward-based sessions usually work better than repetition or force. Use small food rewards, toys, praise, and play, and stop before the dog becomes bored.
Training priorities
- House-training and a consistent daily routine
- Basic cues such as sit, down, stay, come, and leave it
- Loose-leash walking without pulling
- Calm handling of paws, ears, face, tail area, and nails
- Comfort with a crate, car rides, visitors, and veterinary examinations
- Gradual socialization to people, surfaces, sounds, and safe environments
Early training matters partly because cooperative grooming and veterinary handling are practical necessities for this breed. Avoid punishment-based methods, which can create fear and make handling more difficult.

“Frenchies do not need exercise” is a misleading claim. A healthy French Bulldog generally benefits from a short daily walk or outdoor play session, adjusted for age, fitness, breathing ability, and weather. Indoor games, trick training, obedience practice, food puzzles, and scent games can provide additional mental work without demanding prolonged exertion.
A Frenchie is not a good choice for jogging, distance running, or high-endurance activities. Stop immediately if the dog develops labored breathing, unusual distress, weakness, wobbliness, or reluctance to continue. Noisy or difficult breathing should not automatically be dismissed as normal for the breed.
Heat and breathing safety
French Bulldogs are brachycephalic: their shortened skull and airway structure can make breathing and heat loss more difficult. Hot or humid conditions, strenuous activity, stress, and excess weight can increase the danger. Keep exercise brief and gentle in warm weather, choose cool times of day, and provide a reliably air-conditioned or otherwise cool environment.

Warning signs include breathing difficulty, extreme distress, weakness, collapse, and bluish or gray gums. Heatstroke and serious respiratory distress are emergencies. Move the dog out of the heat, seek urgent veterinary care, and do not wait to see whether the signs resolve.
BOAS—brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome—can involve narrowed nostrils, an elongated or thickened soft palate, airway obstruction, noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, regurgitation, and heat intolerance. The severity varies between dogs. A breed label alone cannot tell you how well an individual Frenchie breathes.
The OFA Respiratory Function Grading Scheme evaluates a dog’s history, a calm physical examination, a three-minute brisk walk, and a post-exercise examination. Grade 0 means no clinical signs; Grade I means mild signs audible only with a stethoscope; Grades II and III indicate clinically affected dogs. Certification is available for French Bulldogs at 12 months or older. Examinations before that age are preliminary. For dogs tested before 24 months, OFA recommends annual veterinary health checks because BOAS can develop later. A passing result does not guarantee that a dog will never develop BOAS.
French Bulldogs and water
Frenchies are poor swimmers. Their heavy, front-loaded shape can make it difficult or impossible for them to keep their nose and mouth above water. Never assume that a Frenchie can learn to swim safely, and never leave one unattended near a pool, bathtub, pond, or lake. A properly fitted life jacket is an additional precaution, not permission to supervise casually.
Grooming a Frenchie
The short coat is relatively simple to maintain, but it still sheds. Brush about once a week with a rubber grooming mitt, hound glove, or medium-bristle brush to remove loose hair and distribute skin oils.

Wrinkle care deserves more attention than the coat. Examine facial folds and the tail area frequently—many owners need to check them daily. If a fold is dirty or damp, clean it using a product your veterinarian considers appropriate and dry it completely. Trapped moisture and debris can contribute to irritation, odor, yeast, and bacterial skin problems.

| Grooming task | Practical routine | Contact your veterinarian if… |
|---|---|---|
| Brushing | Approximately weekly | Skin is painful, inflamed, or losing hair |
| Facial and tail folds | Inspect frequently; clean and dry as needed, often daily | There is persistent odor, redness, discharge, or soreness |
| Nails | Trim regularly before they become overgrown | The dog is painful, limping, or cannot tolerate handling |
| Ears and eyes | Check during routine grooming | There is discharge, repeated rubbing, squinting, or swelling |
Do not keep treating recurring skin odor or redness indefinitely with home products. Persistent or painful signs need a veterinary diagnosis.
Feeding and healthy weight
Feed a complete, balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage. Measure meals instead of free-feeding, and account for training treats and table scraps. French Bulldogs commonly gain excess weight, and obesity can worsen breathing, reduce mobility, and add mechanical strain to an already compact body.
The AKC breed standard sets a maximum of 28 pounds, but that is a show-ring measurement—not a universal target weight or an obesity diagnosis. A muscular, larger-framed dog may weigh more, while another Frenchie may be overweight below that number. Your veterinarian should assess body condition, muscle, frame, and overall health.
Health concerns to discuss with your veterinarian
Airway disease
Breathing noise, poor exercise tolerance, regurgitation, and heat intolerance can indicate BOAS. Do not accept constant snoring, noisy breathing, or recovery problems as unavoidable simply because the dog is a Frenchie. Ask your veterinarian to assess breathing, particularly if signs are worsening or limiting ordinary activity.
Spine and orthopedic problems
French Bulldogs can develop vertebral abnormalities, spinal disease, and intervertebral disc problems. Reduce repeated high-impact activity, uncontrolled jumping, and rough play. Teach children to handle the dog gently.
Pain, reluctance to walk or jump, weakness, wobbliness, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires prompt veterinary attention. Sudden weakness or paralysis is an emergency.

Eyes, skin, and allergies
Reported breed concerns include cherry eye, entropion, juvenile cataracts, skin allergies, and autoimmune skin disorders. Seek veterinary advice for squinting, eye rubbing, discharge, cloudiness, persistent itching, hair loss, or recurrent skin infections.
Anesthesia
Flat-faced dogs may have difficult airways and can require particular care during sedation and anesthesia. Tell every veterinary team that your dog is brachycephalic. For planned procedures, choose a clinic experienced with French Bulldogs and ask how the airway will be managed and monitored during recovery.
Choosing a French Bulldog puppy
Health records matter more than a rare color, a fashionable label, or a seller’s general promise that the puppies are “vet checked.” The AKC page reflecting French Bull Dog Club of America recommendations lists these evaluations for breeding dogs:
- Patella evaluation
- Hip evaluation
- Congenital cardiac examination; an echocardiogram is recommended but not required
- Ophthalmologist evaluation
- Optional juvenile hereditary cataract DNA testing and thyroid evaluation
For CHIC participation, the French Bull Dog Club of America lists hip, eye, patella, and cardiac registry entries, along with permanent identification by microchip or tattoo. Check both parents in the OFA database and ask to see the actual results.
A CHIC number means that specified testing was completed and recorded. It does not mean every result was normal, and it does not guarantee that a puppy will remain free of disease. Respiratory testing is also worth discussing. OFA notes that BOAS inheritance is not fully understood or predictable, so even tested parents cannot guarantee a problem-free puppy.

DNA tests for dilute color, long hair, and other coat traits can identify variants, but a test does not make a nonstandard color healthier or demonstrate responsible breeding. Give priority to functional breathing, sound structure, temperament, and documented health testing over novelty colors.
Is a French Bulldog right for you?
A Frenchie may be a good match if you want a close companion, can provide daily but moderate activity, enjoy reward-based training, and can keep the dog cool and at a healthy weight. Apartment living can work because the breed is adaptable, provided the dog still receives movement, enrichment, and regular outdoor opportunities.
Think carefully if you want a running partner, spend long periods in hot conditions, cannot supervise a dog around water, or are unprepared for breed-associated veterinary needs. Owning a French Bulldog means treating breathing, heat tolerance, wrinkle health, and weight as routine priorities—not occasional concerns.
FAQ
Are French Bulldogs good apartment dogs?
They can adapt well to apartment living because they are companion-oriented and do not need prolonged endurance exercise. They still need daily movement, mental stimulation, training, and careful heat management.
How much exercise does a French Bulldog need?
A healthy Frenchie generally benefits from a short daily walk or outdoor play session, with intensity adjusted to the individual dog. Indoor games, food puzzles, and training add mental stimulation. Avoid jogging, distance running, and strenuous exercise in heat or humidity.
Is snoring normal for French Bulldogs?
Snoring and other breathing noises should not automatically be considered normal. Noisy breathing, poor exercise tolerance, regurgitation, or heat intolerance can be signs of BOAS and should be assessed by a veterinarian.
Can French Bulldogs swim?
They are poor swimmers because their front-heavy body shape can prevent them from keeping their head above water. Never leave a Frenchie unattended near any water, even if it has previously been introduced to swimming.
The Bottom Line
French Bulldogs are affectionate, entertaining companions, but their compact, flat-faced conformation requires deliberate care. Provide measured meals, regular gentle exercise, weekly brushing, frequent wrinkle checks, cool conditions, strict water supervision, and reward-based training. Most importantly, treat breathing difficulty, heat intolerance, painful skin, eye changes, or spinal warning signs as medical issues—not simply as quirks of the breed.
