After his family challenged the dangerous-dog declaration, the City of Greater Geraldton consented to its revocation in November 2025. The proceedings were withdrawn after an undertaking that Dozer complete 10 training sessions and that his owners continue to comply with Western Australia’s Dog Act 1976.
What happened to Dozer?
In August 2025, PerthNow reported that City of Greater Geraldton rangers had seized Dozer, a golden Labrador belonging to the Weller family, following a complaint that he attacked a German shepherd being walked by a woman. The alleged attack was not established by a tribunal finding in the reports available.

Owner Jill Weller said the family had received little information about the allegation and that the City had referred to earlier incidents. She told PerthNow: “They didn’t tell us anything else, no details about what happened, no supporting evidence, nothing.” That was Weller’s account of what the family had been told.
Was Dozer going to be put down?
The family feared Dozer would be euthanised, but the City’s reported position was that it did not intend to put him down on the Wednesday identified in the August coverage. Then-CEO Ross McKim told PerthNow “the city has no intentions of euthanising the dog in question on Wednesday.” ABC later reported that the City denied intending to euthanise him. The reports do not establish that euthanasia was a City plan.

How did the family challenge the declaration?
The Wellers appealed to the State Administrative Tribunal. In September 2025, ABC reported that the City planned to submit video and witness evidence. Weller said she had submitted a behavioural assessment and statements from people who knew Dozer. Those reports describe the parties’ intended or submitted material, not a tribunal ruling on whether the alleged attack occurred.
Why was the declaration revoked?
In November 2025, the City consented to revoking the dangerous-dog declaration during the tribunal process. The final hearing dates were vacated and the proceedings withdrawn rather than concluded with a reported contested hearing decision. The reported resolution included an undertaking for Dozer to complete 10 training sessions, with written confirmation and observations from the training centre, and for his owners to keep him in accordance with the Dog Act 1976.

By the time of the resolution, Dozer and his family had relocated to Wyndham after his release from the City’s animal-management facility. Weller said in a statement reported by Geraldton Guardian: “Dozer is free! We are relieved to report that Dozer’s dangerous dog declaration has been revoked by Geraldton city council.” City acting CEO Chris Lee said the City would continue to work with the community on responsible ownership and take appropriate actions to protect people and animals.

What does Western Australia’s law say about a dangerous-dog declaration?
The Western Australian legislation register lists the Dog Act 1976 consolidated version dated 28 November 2024. Under section 33F, a written notice declaring a dog dangerous must give reasons and explain the owner’s objection and State Administrative Tribunal review rights. The notice must specify a period of no more than seven days to exercise those rights, and the declaration takes effect seven days after notice. This is general statutory context; it does not establish whether every procedural step was followed in Dozer’s case.

Are the restrictions reported in August still current?
PerthNow reported that the family had been told reclaiming Dozer required 1.8-metre solid fencing, muzzles, a dangerous-dog collar, warning signs and a $250 inspection. Those were requirements reported at that time as the family understood them; they should not be treated as current dangerous-dog instructions after the declaration was revoked.
For ordinary local pet-ownership requirements, the City of Greater Geraldton says owners must register dogs and ensure they do not wander. Its page also lists registration, microchipping and collar-tag requirements for dogs over three months old. Council instructions can change, so owners should check the City’s current guidance directly.
