Great Pyrenees (Pyr): Dog Breed Characteristics & Care

Great Pyrenees are affectionate, calm livestock guardians—but also independent, territorial, loud, and heavily coated. Here is what responsible Pyr care involves.

The Great Pyrenees—called the Pyrenean Mountain Dog in Europe and the Patou in France—is a large livestock guardian, not merely a fluffy “gentle giant.” Bred to watch sheep and deter predators in the Pyrenees Mountains, the breed is calm and affectionate at home but independent, territorial, vigilant, and often very vocal.

That combination can make a Pyr a wonderful family companion in the right home and a difficult neighbor in the wrong one. Before choosing one, consider its barking, secure-fencing requirements, grooming, size, guardian instincts, and willingness to make its own decisions.

Great Pyrenees at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Other names Pyrenean Mountain Dog; Patou
AKC group Working Group
Adult height Dogs: 27–32 inches; bitches: 25–29 inches at the withers
Adult weight The AKC standard gives approximate reference weights of about 100 pounds for a 27-inch dog and 85 pounds for a 25-inch bitch, rather than one fixed weight
Coat Predominantly white, weather-resistant double coat; badger, gray, and tan markings are permitted
Exercise Moderate for a healthy adult, but daily activity and engagement are still necessary
Typical lifespan Approximately 10–12 years
Best-known challenges Barking, territorial behavior, shedding, independent training style, and the need for secure confinement

These are very substantial dogs. Their size matters when choosing a vehicle, crate, bed, veterinary practice, walking equipment, and home layout—not just when estimating food costs.

Great Pyrenees temperament and behavior

A well-bred and well-socialized Great Pyrenees is generally steady, affectionate with its household, and capable of relaxing indoors. It may be gentle with familiar children and animals, but that does not erase its guardian instincts. A Pyr may regard unfamiliar people, delivery workers, passing dogs, or activity beyond the fence as potential concerns.

Livestock guardians were expected to notice threats and act without waiting for a handler to give instructions. That history helps explain why a Pyr can appear to understand a cue and still decide that patrolling the property is more important. This is independent working behavior, not evidence that the dog is unintelligent.

Barking is part of the job

Frequent, powerful barking—including nighttime barking—is normal for many Great Pyrenees. Individuals vary, but the breed was developed to alert and deter predators, sometimes while working alone far from people. Exercise alone will not reliably eliminate this behavior.

Owners can reduce problems by limiting access to visual triggers, teaching a consistent response to an interruption cue, rewarding quiet moments, providing a predictable routine, and bringing the dog indoors when appropriate. Do not expect a Pyr to naturally ignore every person and animal outside the home. Check local nuisance-noise rules and speak with neighbors before bringing one into a densely settled area.

Is a Great Pyrenees suitable for an apartment?

An apartment is not automatically impossible, but it is often impractical. The obstacles are not just the dog’s size. Shared hallways, elevators, close neighbors, unfamiliar visitors, limited outdoor space, and barking at sounds outside the door can all be difficult to manage.

A house with a securely fenced area is generally a better arrangement. A Pyr should be leashed outside a secure enclosure because it may patrol beyond the boundary it was given or decide that the surrounding neighborhood is part of its territory. Fencing must be high, sturdy, and checked regularly; a determined giant dog can exploit weak gates or gaps.

A Pyr can be calm in a house, but “calm indoors” does not mean “low maintenance.” You still need daily interaction, supervision, training, grooming, and a plan for visitors.

Exercise needs

Healthy adult Great Pyrenees generally have moderate exercise needs rather than the nonstop drive of a working Border Collie or sporting dog. A daily walk, sniffing session, or play period is usually appropriate, adjusted for age, fitness, weather, and medical status. Short training sessions and supervised time outdoors also provide useful mental engagement.

Because barking is a core guarding behavior, increasing exercise should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for vocalizing. Manage the dog’s access to triggers as well as providing activity.

Protect growing joints

Great Pyrenees puppies grow into large dogs, and their developing bones and joints should not be subjected to a human-style fitness program. Avoid routinely jogging or running a puppy on hard surfaces, repetitive high-impact games, high jumps, abrupt stops, and rapid repeated changes of direction. Increase strenuous activity gradually and ask your veterinarian for advice about conditioning.

Training and socialization

Start socialization and basic training in puppyhood. Introduce new experiences gradually and positively rather than flooding the puppy with overwhelming stimulation. Useful experiences include:

  • Visitors and calm handling by different people
  • Leashes, vehicles, household sounds, and different surfaces
  • Grooming, nail trimming, ear checks, and mouth and foot handling
  • Veterinary procedures and vehicle loading
  • Appropriately vaccinated, stable dogs
  • Calm behavior around gates, fences, food, and household activity

Use reward-based methods, clear rules, and short, consistent sessions. Intimidation and physical punishment are especially poor choices for a large guardian breed: they can damage trust and may intensify defensive behavior.

Prioritize practical reliability over tricks or perfect competition-style obedience. Teach loose-leash walking, come, leave it, stay, settling indoors, and calm visitor routines. A dependable off-leash hiking companion is not a realistic promise for every Pyr, even after good training.

Grooming a Great Pyrenees

The breed has a weather-resistant double coat, predominantly white, with a dense undercoat and a longer outer coat. It sheds substantially, especially during seasonal coat changes. White hair on clothing, furniture, floors, and car upholstery is part of ownership.

Brush at least weekly. During heavy shedding, many dogs need more frequent sessions. A suitable undercoat rake, comb, or pin brush can remove loose hair, but work gently and methodically rather than pulling through knots.

Pay particular attention to areas that mat easily:

  • Behind the ears
  • Under the neck
  • The belly and hindquarters
  • The backs of the legs
  • Any area where moisture, dirt, or friction collects

Trim nails and rear dewclaws regularly. Check the ears for excess wax, dampness, irritation, or signs of infection. Also inspect the hair around the eyebrows so it does not curl into the eyes. If the coat is severely matted, painful, or affected by skin disease, ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer for help.

Should you shave a Great Pyrenees?

No—not as routine summer care. The double coat helps insulate the dog and protects its skin from sun and environmental exposure. Shaving a healthy coat does not reliably keep a Pyr cool and can leave the skin more vulnerable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clipping may be medically necessary to treat severe matting or diseased skin. That is different from shaving a healthy dog because the weather is warm.

Feeding and weight management

Feed a complete and balanced diet suited to the dog’s life stage. The correct portion depends on body condition, growth, activity, health, and the food’s calorie density, so have your veterinarian help adjust it.

Do not feed by visual size alone. Great Pyrenees can have a relatively slow metabolism, and excess weight places additional stress on already vulnerable joints. You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat, and the dog should have a visible waist when viewed from above. Your veterinarian can assess body condition more accurately than a target number on a food bag.

Older breed-specific feeding claims—such as mandatory canned food, a particular protein percentage, yogurt as a universal bloat preventative, or a prohibition on dry food—should not replace individualized veterinary nutrition advice.

Health concerns and routine care

Great Pyrenees are generally considered a healthy breed, but responsible owners and breeders should be aware of several reported concerns:

  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Patellar luxation
  • Spinal problems
  • Eye disorders, including cataracts and eyelash abnormalities
  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly called bloat or GDV
  • Other inherited disorders addressed by breed-specific screening programs

Arrange regular veterinary examinations and keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current according to your veterinarian’s recommendations. Monitor weight, mobility, skin, ears, eyes, teeth, nails, and changes in behavior. A large dog that suddenly becomes reluctant to rise, climb stairs, eat, or walk should be evaluated rather than simply assumed to be slowing down with age.

What health testing should a breeder provide?

The Great Pyrenees Club of America’s published CHIC protocol requires:

  1. A hip-dysplasia evaluation through an accepted registry such as OFA, PennHIP, FCI, or AVA.
  2. An OFA patellar-luxation examination.
  3. At least one additional elective test from the club’s listed options, such as elbow, cardiac, thyroid, eye, BAER hearing, shoulder OCD, CMR DNA, or GT DNA testing.

The club also strongly recommends DNA testing for neuronal degeneration and dwarfism. Ask for verifiable records and look up publicly available results instead of accepting a verbal statement that the parents are “health tested.”

A CHIC number is useful evidence that required tests were completed and results were made public. It is not a guarantee that a dog is disease-free, nor does it mean every result is normal.

Bloat and GDV: know the emergency signs

GDV can become rapidly fatal. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if your Great Pyrenees has:

  • Repeated unsuccessful attempts to vomit or retch
  • Restlessness, distress, or obvious abdominal discomfort
  • Excessive drooling or rapid breathing
  • A swollen or painful abdomen
  • Weakness, collapse, pale gums, or signs of shock

Do not wait to see whether the symptoms settle and do not try to treat suspected GDV at home. Know the location and phone number of an emergency clinic before you need it.

Veterinary discussions about risk reduction may include several smaller meals instead of one large meal, avoiding vigorous exercise immediately before and after eating, reducing mealtime stress, and avoiding elevated bowls. Ask a veterinary surgeon whether a preventive gastropexy is appropriate. Gastropexy helps prevent the stomach from twisting, but it does not prevent every case of stomach dilation or bloat.

Heat management

Do not shave the coat to deal with warm weather, but do take heat seriously. Provide shade, fresh water, ventilation, and access to air conditioning during dangerous heat. Walk during cooler periods and avoid strenuous activity in hot or humid conditions.

Heavy rapid breathing, weakness, confusion, vomiting, collapse, or other signs of heatstroke require immediate veterinary attention. Move the dog away from the heat and contact an emergency veterinarian while following professional first-aid instructions.

Choosing a Great Pyrenees puppy or adult

A responsible breeder should provide a written contract, pedigree, health records, vaccination and medication information, feeding instructions, and verifiable screening results for both parents. Ask to see the parents where possible and observe their temperaments, housing, and physical condition. Be cautious of sellers who will not answer questions, will not show records, or promise a perfectly quiet, instantly obedient guardian.

Adoption is another route. An adult Pyr may already be house-trained and have some basic manners. Give a newly adopted dog an appropriate transition period, then evaluate its behavior in the context of its previous experiences and current environment.

Common Great Pyrenees myths

Claim What is more accurate
“They are just gentle giants.” They can be affectionate and gentle, but they retain serious guarding and territorial instincts.
“They need to run for hours every day.” Adults usually have moderate exercise needs, though they require daily activity and engagement.
“They cannot live in a house because they are too large.” Many can be calm house dogs if their size, barking, coat, supervision, and exercise needs fit the household.
“Shaving keeps them cool.” The double coat provides insulation and environmental protection; routine shaving is not recommended.
“A CHIC number proves the dog is healthy.” It documents completion and publication of screening results, not a health guarantee.
“More exercise will stop the barking.” Exercise helps meet the dog’s needs, but alert barking is part of the breed’s working heritage.

FAQ

Are Great Pyrenees good family dogs?

They can be affectionate, calm family companions when well bred, socialized, trained, and supervised. Their size, territorial behavior, shedding, and loud barking require a household prepared to manage a guardian breed rather than expecting a universally easygoing pet.

Do Great Pyrenees bark a lot?

Often, yes. Alerting—sometimes at night—is normal livestock-guardian behavior. Training and management can reduce nuisance barking, but a Pyr is a poor fit for someone who needs a naturally quiet dog or one that ignores activity outside the home.

Can a Great Pyrenees live in an apartment?

Some individuals may adapt, but apartments are frequently a poor match because of barking, size, shared spaces, territorial behavior, and limited secure outdoor access. A securely fenced home is generally more practical.

How often should you brush a Great Pyrenees?

Brush at least weekly, increasing the frequency during heavy seasonal shedding. Check behind the ears, under the neck, belly, hindquarters, and backs of the legs for mats, and do not routinely shave the double coat.

The Bottom Line

The Great Pyrenees suits owners who value a calm, devoted guardian and can accept independent decision-making, loud alert barking, heavy shedding, and the management needs of a giant dog. A secure fence, reward-based training, regular grooming, careful weight control, veterinary screening, and a plan for GDV and hot weather are essential. If you need a quiet, highly obedient, reliably off-leash dog, another breed may be a better choice.
