Squirrels with grotesque, wart-like or oozing growths reported in several U.S. states are most likely showing squirrel fibromatosis—a familiar squirrel-associated viral disease, not anything resembling resurrection or a human “zombie” infection.

Those alarming photographs of squirrels with large, wart-like or oozing growths are most likely showing squirrel fibromatosis—also called squirrel pox—not “zombie” animals and not evidence of a new human disease.

News reports in June 2026 described similarly affected squirrels in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, and other parts of the United States. The reports support a familiar wildlife disease as the likely explanation, but they do not establish a nationwide outbreak, a newly evolved virus, or a diagnosis for every squirrel shown in a photograph.[C1][C2][C3]

What is causing the growths?

Squirrel fibromatosis is associated with a squirrel-specific leporipoxvirus. It causes fibromas—virus-associated skin tumors or growths—on the body. The disease has been documented in eastern and Midwestern states and can affect gray, fox, and red squirrels in North America.[C2][C3]

“Tumor” does not automatically mean malignant cancer. In this disease, a fibroma is generally a skin growth linked to the virus. However, the condition is not necessarily inconsequential in every individual case. A mass can interfere with an eye, mouth, limb, or another body function. Rarely, internal involvement can leave a squirrel weak or lethargic, and a damaged growth can develop a secondary infection.[C2][C3]

A photograph can suggest squirrel fibromatosis, especially when multiple raised lesions appear on an otherwise recognizable squirrel. It cannot confirm the diagnosis. Abscesses, injuries, bacterial infections, and other skin conditions can also produce abnormal lumps or open wounds.[C2][C4]

Why do the lesions look so severe?

Fibromas can vary in size and may occur across the body. Indiana wildlife guidance says they can reach roughly 25 millimeters in diameter and often do not substantially impair the squirrel. A growth may nevertheless look much worse after it ulcerates, bleeds, becomes contaminated, or is irritated by scratching and movement.[C2][C3]

Most affected squirrels continue to climb, forage, and behave normally. Cornell’s wildlife-health guidance says outbreaks can occasionally cause high mortality, while state guidance notes that serious effects are more likely when lesions become extensive, infected, obstruct a vital function, or are accompanied by internal disease.[C2][C3]

How squirrel fibromatosis spreads

The virus can be transmitted by biting insects, including mosquitoes and fleas. Direct contact with an infected squirrel or contaminated objects may also spread it. Cornell identifies biting insects as the most common route in squirrels and notes that transmission from a mother to nursing young may be possible.[C2][C3]

Communal feeding can increase the opportunity for transmission. Squirrels that crowd around a feeder are in closer contact with one another, and a feeder or nearby surface may become contaminated. Do not add food, create a feeding station, or hand-feed a visibly affected squirrel to make it easier to watch or help.[C2]

Is it dangerous to people or pets?

There is no evidence in the cited wildlife-health guidance that squirrel fibromatosis infects people, dogs, or cats. The virus is considered species-specific, and Cornell says wildlife fibroma viruses are not transmissible to humans. Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources likewise says squirrel fibromatosis does not infect humans or common household pets.[C2][C3]

That does not mean a sick squirrel is safe to handle. Any frightened or injured wild animal can bite or scratch, and an open lesion may contain blood or secondary bacterial contamination. Keep children and pets away, do not attempt to pick up the squirrel, and wash your hands after incidental contact with surfaces near it.

The virus has been associated with transmission to woodchucks in the wild and to rabbits under laboratory conditions. That is a wildlife-management consideration—not evidence of a human outbreak and not a reason to assume that ordinary household pets are at risk.[C2]

What to do if you see one

  1. Observe from a distance. If the squirrel is climbing, eating, moving normally, and avoiding obvious danger, leave it alone. There is no established treatment for the fibromas themselves, and routine capture is generally not warranted when the animal is functioning normally.[C2]
  2. Keep pets away. Bring dogs inside or use a leash, and prevent cats from approaching, chasing, or catching the squirrel.
  3. Do not touch, feed, medicate, or capture it. Do not apply antibiotics, ivermectin, ointments, or wound treatments, and do not attempt euthanasia. Home treatment can injure the animal and the person attempting it.
  4. Contact a qualified local professional when the squirrel is in serious trouble. Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, state wildlife agency, or local animal-control authority for instructions if the animal is weak, lethargic, unable to eat, unable to see, trapped, bleeding heavily, or being attacked.
  5. Follow local instructions for a dead animal. Do not assume that carcass collection or disposal rules are the same in every state. If an agency tells you to move it, ask how to do so safely and what protective equipment and disposal method to use.

If an official tells you to handle it

Only handle a sick or dead squirrel when a wildlife authority or other qualified local professional specifically instructs you to do so. Use disposable nitrile gloves or other personal protective equipment as directed, avoid contact with your face, and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Gloves are a barrier for the hazards of handling wildlife; they are not a treatment and should not be presented as proof that the squirrel virus can infect people.

Can you report or document a sighting?

Yes. A clear photograph or short video taken from a safe distance may help a state wildlife agency or rehabilitator decide what guidance to give. Do not approach, bait, corner, or restrain the squirrel to obtain better footage. Record the date, approximate location, species if known, and whether the animal is eating, moving, or showing signs of impairment.

For recurring backyard observations, an optional wildlife observation trail camera can document activity without bringing people or pets closer. It is not required, and camera images cannot confirm a medical diagnosis.

Does this mean squirrels are experiencing a nationwide outbreak?

Not based on the available evidence. The June 2026 reports describe conspicuous sightings in several states, including Florida, Michigan, and North Carolina. State and wildlife-health resources show that squirrel fibromatosis is an established disease in parts of the eastern and Midwestern United States, including Michigan and Indiana.[C1][C2][C3][C5]

Those facts support three different conclusions:

What is supported What it means
Observed Residents and news outlets reported squirrels with conspicuous growths in multiple states in June 2026.[C1]
Likely explanation Wildlife experts and agency resources identify squirrel fibromatosis as a plausible and familiar cause.[C1][C2][C3]
Not established The reports do not provide a national incidence rate or prove a nationwide outbreak, a new virus, or a significant human-health threat.

Nor should this U.S. condition be confused with the severe squirrelpox disease associated with declines in red squirrels in the United Kingdom. The sources discussed here concern squirrel fibromatosis in North American squirrels.[C2][C6]

What about eating a squirrel?

Do not consume an animal that appears sick, has internal masses, or shows evidence of secondary infection. Indiana wildlife guidance reports no infected humans from consumption when tumors remain confined to the skin, but that limited statement is not a recommendation to harvest or eat visibly diseased wildlife. Follow local wildlife and food-safety rules, and obtain agency guidance if a carcass is involved.[C3]

Bottom line

The “zombie squirrel” nickname describes the disturbing appearance, not the biology. The growths reported in several U.S. states in June 2026 are likely squirrel fibromatosis, a known squirrel-associated viral disease that usually produces skin fibromas. It is not known to infect people, dogs, or cats, but the animals should still be treated as wild and potentially hazardous to handle. Watch from a distance, keep pets away, and refer an impaired or badly injured squirrel to local wildlife professionals rather than trying to treat it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What disease causes the growths on these squirrels?

The squirrels are most likely affected by squirrel fibromatosis, also called squirrel pox. It is a squirrel-associated viral disease that causes skin fibromas, or growths. A photograph cannot confirm the diagnosis, because abscesses, injuries, and other skin conditions can look similar.

Can squirrel fibromatosis spread to humans or pets?

No. The cited wildlife-health guidance describes the virus as species-specific and says it is not known to infect people, dogs, or cats. A wild squirrel can still bite or scratch, and an open lesion may contain secondary bacterial contamination, so do not handle it.

What should I do if I see a squirrel with tumors?

Leave it alone if it is active and functioning normally. Keep pets away and observe from a distance. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, state wildlife agency, or animal-control authority if it is weak, lethargic, unable to eat or see, trapped, heavily bleeding, or being attacked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a home treatment for an affected squirrel?

Do not apply medication, antibiotics, ivermectin, or wound treatment, and do not try to capture or euthanize the squirrel without qualified local direction. There is no established treatment for the fibromas themselves, and untrained intervention can harm both the animal and the person.

Is this a nationwide squirrel outbreak?

The available reports show sightings in several states and an established disease pattern in parts of the eastern and Midwestern United States. They do not establish a nationwide outbreak or provide a 2026 national incidence rate.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The grotesque growths are most likely squirrel fibromatosis, not a “zombie” disease or a confirmed nationwide outbreak. It is not known to infect people, dogs, or cats, but do not touch, feed, medicate, or capture an affected squirrel. Keep pets away and contact a licensed wildlife professional if the animal is weak, trapped, bleeding heavily, or unable to function.
