Haast’s eagle was a real, extinct New Zealand raptor whose powerful legs and talons were adapted to prey on large birds, especially moa. Fossils show its exceptional size and preserve damage consistent with eagle attacks; the exact sequence of a hunt is reconstructed, not directly known. The species likely disappeared about 500–600 years ago as moa populations collapsed, with human hunting of moa considered the main cause and habitat change a possible additional pressure.
What was Haast’s eagle?
Haast’s eagle was an extinct bird of prey known from fossil remains in New Zealand. In 1871, taxidermist Frederick Fuller noticed unusual bones while digging for moa remains at Glenmark; Julius von Haast then issued the first scientific description. The name used by Te Papa is “Giant eagle (Aquila moorei), Haast’s eagle, or Pouākai,” while reference works use other scientific names, including Harpagornis moorei. Naming has varied across the literature, so these names should not be treated as a single settled modern classification without qualification. Te Papa’s account of Haast’s eagle and Canterbury Museum’s discussion of its DNA provide further context.
How big was Haast’s eagle?
New Zealand Birds Online gives reconstructed maximum dimensions of up to 3 metres in wingspan, 1.4 metres in body length, and 90 centimetres in standing height. These are estimates from fossil evidence, not measurements of living birds; an individual at the maximum would not represent every eagle. The reference describes exceptionally strong legs, feet, and talons and places the species among the largest known eagles. New Zealand Birds Online’s species account reports these estimates.
Where did it live?
Fossils are known from dozens of sites on the South Island and one site on Stewart Island. Finds cluster in the south and east of the South Island, with some in Nelson. New Zealand Birds Online describes its habitat as drier country east of the Southern Alps, from sea level to subalpine elevations. A lack of fossils in a particular area is not proof that the eagle could never have occurred there.

Did Haast’s eagle hunt moa?
Yes. Moa were major prey, and several independent lines of fossil evidence support that conclusion. New Zealand Birds Online describes the eagle as morphologically suited to hunting moa, including large forms. The University of Canterbury Research Repository thesis abstract reports claw marks on 10% of sampled moa pelvis bones from birds estimated to have weighed 80–100 kilograms. This is evidence consistent with predation, not a record of a witnessed attack. The University of Canterbury thesis record explains the finding.
How might it have killed its prey?
Its robust feet and talons, together with damage on moa bones, support the interpretation that Haast’s eagle grappled with large prey. A 2021 report by the Natural History Museum describes a proposed hunting sequence in which the talons first toppled prey and the beak delivered a killing blow. New Zealand Birds Online discusses another reconstruction in which an eagle struck and grappled a moa. These are hypotheses based on anatomy and fossil damage; the evidence does not establish every movement, or show that every hunt followed the same pattern. The Natural History Museum’s report outlines the proposed sequence.

When did Haast’s eagle go extinct?
New Zealand Birds Online places its extinction roughly 500–600 years ago, around the time moa disappeared. That is an approximate window, not a precise last-sighting date. Te Ara records that moa use by people began about 650–700 years ago and that moa remains do not appear in middens after 1550 CE; these archaeological dates concern moa, not the eagle’s last survival. Te Ara’s account of moa and people describes the archaeological context.
Why did Haast’s eagle go extinct?
The best-supported explanation links its disappearance to the collapse of its principal prey. New Zealand Birds Online identifies human overhunting of moa as the probable main driver and says habitat burning, with resulting prey loss, may also have contributed. Te Papa likewise connects the eagle’s decline with dwindling food, while Te Ara attributes moa’s rapid demise to direct hunting and habitat modification. The evidence supports an ecological explanation, but does not establish one exact final cause or a precise extinction year for the eagle.

Was the pouākai real?
Pouākai is used as an alternate name for Haast’s eagle by Te Papa, and Māori traditions include accounts of giant birds such as pouākai and hokioi. Te Papa also points to cave drawings and tools made from eagle bone as evidence of Māori knowledge of the giant bird. New Zealand Birds Online says oral traditions may have been inspired by Haast’s eagle. That possibility should not be stretched into a claim that every traditional account is a direct description of this fossil species; cultural traditions and scientific species descriptions are different kinds of evidence.
