The ASPCA says rapid growth in Cornish Cross broilers is associated with health and welfare concerns; slower-growing alternatives include specific approved genetic crosses. But a breed name, an approved cross and an animal-welfare certification are not interchangeable—and not every certified chicken is required to come from a slow-growing line.
Why growth rate matters to chicken health
Broiler chickens are raised for meat, and breeding choices affect their growth rate. The ASPCA argues that when growth is exceptionally rapid, other parts of a bird’s body may not develop at the same pace. It associates Cornish Cross genetics with difficulty walking, muscle damage, foot injuries, skin burns, strain on the heart and lungs, and poor immunity. These are concerns the ASPCA reports—not outcomes that should be assumed for every individual bird.

The ASPCA’s September 2025 article says more than 9 billion chickens are raised for meat in the United States each year and estimates that 98% are Cornish Cross. It also uses a striking comparison: a Cornish Cross chicken grows at a rate equivalent to a two-month-old human baby weighing 660 pounds. The ASPCA attributes that analogy to a study, but the underlying study is not identified here, so treat it as the organization’s reported comparison rather than an independently verified figure. What counts as a “healthier” chicken breed?
There is no universal list that ranks every chicken breed from healthiest to least healthy. For meat chickens, the useful question is whether a particular genetic cross has been evaluated or approved under a welfare program, and what that program requires. A cross is a specific pairing of genetic lines; approval of one pairing does not automatically approve either parent line by itself or the reverse pairing.

Global Animal Partnership (G.A.P.) says its Better Chicken Project draws on independent University of Guelph research involving more than 7,500 broiler chickens across 16 genetic strains. G.A.P. publishes eligible crosses, but says its list is not exhaustive and allows additional breeds to be tested. That means inclusion is meaningful within the program, not proof that the listed options form a complete or universal health ranking.

These names refer to specific eligible crosses in G.A.P.’s Better Chicken Project list. A package that says only “Ranger,” for example, may not give enough detail to establish which cross was used; look for the exact sourcing claim. Does G.A.P. certification guarantee slow-growing chicken?
No—not at every certification tier. In its 2025 update to chicken standards v4.1, G.A.P. retained the slow-growth breed requirement at Steps 4, 5 and 5+. At Steps 1, 2 and 3, producers may choose whether to use approved slow-growth breeds while meeting the other requirements that apply to their tier. Therefore, a G.A.P. label alone does not establish that a chicken came from an approved slow-growth cross.

How to choose chicken with clearer welfare and breed claims
- Check the package for the certification name and tier. Do not treat “certified” by itself as proof of a particular breed or growth rate.
- Look for an explicit breed or cross claim. Compare the exact name with G.A.P.’s published eligible list rather than assuming that any related breed name qualifies.
- Ask the brand if the label is unclear. Ask which cross it sources and whether that sourcing applies to the specific product you are buying.
- Use an animal-welfare shopping guide as a starting point. The ASPCA recommends its Shop With Your Heart Grocery List for finding animal-welfare-certified brands and supermarkets. Verify the current product label and breed claim, since a guide listing and an individual package may not establish the same details.
