A cat may meow, paw at you, or knock objects down to get food or interaction, and a response that reliably follows can teach the cat to repeat the behavior. But new or increased vocalizing can also signal pain, illness, or age-related changes. Check for those possibilities first, then meet your cat’s needs predictably and reward calm behavior.
How to tell whether your cat is asking for attention
Frequent meowing, pawing at a caregiver, and knocking objects from shelves can be bids for interaction. Cats also vocalize to greet people, ask for food, or request to be let in or out. The behavior’s timing and what happens afterward can offer clues about what the cat wants, but they do not establish a diagnosis.

Keep a simple log of when the behavior occurs, what happened just before it, and how people responded. The ASPCA recommends noting the circumstances and tracking vocalization patterns. Look for repeated connections: for example, does meowing happen near a meal, when you sit down, or at a time when the cat usually wants to play?
How a learned routine can develop
If a cat wakes a caregiver and receives breakfast, food may become the consequence that keeps the routine going. Attention can do the same—even an annoyed response may still count as attention. This does not mean the caregiver caused the behavior deliberately; ordinary efforts to quiet or feed a cat can unintentionally make a predictable pattern more likely.

When meowing needs a veterinary check
Do not assume frequent or newly increased vocalization is merely attention-seeking. Pain, illness, disorientation, hearing loss, and other age-related changes can affect a cat’s behavior. The ASPCA advises veterinary assessment to rule out medical causes, and its guidance for older cats specifically identifies medical and age-related reasons for increased vocalization.
Arrange a veterinary check if the meowing is new or has increased, your cat is acting differently, or you notice other concerning changes. A behavior log can help you describe the pattern, but it cannot determine whether a medical problem is present.

A humane plan to reduce attention-seeking behavior
- Check health and unmet needs. Address new or increased vocalization with your veterinarian before treating it as a training issue. Consider whether your cat has predictable access to food, play, social contact, and other appropriate activities.
- Schedule interaction and play. FelineVMA recommends interactive play at least twice daily and regular, positive human-cat interaction. Choose workable times, such as before or after work or before bed. A wand toy is one example, not a requirement; choose activities your cat engages with safely.
- Reward the behavior you want. Offer attention or, when appropriate for your cat’s diet, a suitable treat during a quiet moment or calm interaction. If your cat is vocalizing for a reward, wait for a pause before responding, then consistently reward the alternative behavior. Follow any dietary guidance from your veterinarian.
- Get ahead of predictable triggers. If the behavior tends to start at a particular time, offer an appropriate activity before it begins. When early waking is tied to breakfast, a timed automatic feeder can deliver a scheduled meal without making it contingent on waking you; it is a routine aid, not a medical assessment or cure.
- Avoid punishment. Do not yell, spray water, or use physical punishment. FelineVMA warns that punishment can increase fear and stress, worsen unwanted behavior, interfere with learning, and damage the human-cat bond.
Do not rely on ignoring the behavior as a universal fix. First make sure your cat’s needs are met and that a health concern is not being missed. If the behavior persists, escalates, or involves aggression or distress, seek veterinary guidance and, when appropriate, help from a qualified behavior professional.
Why indoor cats need more than a response to meowing
Reducing a noisy routine is not the same as meeting a cat’s broader needs. In an announcement about its 2025 indoor-cat position statement, published August 28, 2025, FelineVMA Chair Ilona Rodan, DVM, DABVP (Feline), AdvCertFB, said: “Indoor-only cats are often assumed to be the safest, but it is more challenging to meet their needs, impacting their physical and emotional health and resulting in more caregiver concerns about behavior.” The point is not that indoor life causes attention-seeking; it is a reminder to provide suitable activity and positive interaction as part of a cat’s daily routine.
