Who is behind Home 4 the Holidays
Helen Woodward Animal Center founded Home 4 the Holidays in 1999. The announcement describes the campaign as a network of more than 4,000 animal rescue organizations, and Blue Buffalo is the food donor. Gabriel Vinas, Blue Buffalo Business Unit Director Dog Feeding, said: “We believe every dog and cat should be loved and fed like family, and that is exemplified by our ongoing commitment to delivering our products to shelters nationwide through our partnership with Home 4 the Holidays®.”

The adoption message
The announcement frames the campaign around choosing a shelter pet rather than buying from a pet store or breeder. It asks families to make adoption their first choice when welcoming a new pet. The food donation is the visible gift, but the adoption appeal is the campaign’s core goal.

How you can help shelter pets this holiday season
- Adopt. The campaign directs readers to the Home 4 the Holidays website to find participating shelters and rescues near them.
- Encourage friends to adopt. The announcement explicitly asks supporters to spread the word.
- Share your adoption. Post a photo of your adopted pet on Instagram with #IChoseToRescue, tagging @hwac and @bluebuffalo, or submit it through the campaign’s contest page. Contest terms and pages can change, so check the current rules on the campaign site before entering.
If you would rather donate directly, ask your local shelter what it accepts first. The announcement says nothing about acceptance rules for donated food, and shelters differ on brands, formulas and opened packages.
The $25,000 creative-promotion award
Per the announcement, Helen Woodward Animal Center is offering $25,000 to the participating organization with the most creative seasonal promotion to increase adoptions. The announcement says this is the eighth year of the offer. It is aimed at shelters and rescues, not individual adopters.

What the announcement does not tell us
- No independent audit of the poundage or of the 22 million pets total, and no methodology for the latter.
- No shelter-by-shelter allocation, so it is not known how much any single organization receives.
- No details on food formulas, or on quantities per organization.
- No donation acceptance rules for individual shelters.
The donation is real support for the organizations that receive it, but the cumulative claims are the company’s and campaign’s own.
