Keep string-like decorations, risky foods, plants, cords, and flames out of your cat’s reach; stabilize the tree and give your cat a quiet place away from guests. If your cat may have swallowed a hazardous item or substance, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly rather than trying home treatment.

Make the tree and decorations safer

Secure the tree and block its water

Anchor the Christmas tree so it cannot tip if your cat climbs it or brushes against it. Cover the tree stand or otherwise prevent access to its water: it may contain preservatives or fertilizers and can become contaminated. With a live tree, discourage chewing or swallowing needles and sap. These precautions address the risks described by ASPCA holiday safety guidance and Pet Poison Helpline’s advice on cats and Christmas trees.

Skip tinsel and keep string-like items away

Do not decorate with tinsel where a cat can reach it, and put ribbon, yarn, thread, and similar string-like items away after use. If swallowed, a linear object can lodge in the digestive tract and injure the intestines; this is a foreign-body hazard, not just a poisoning concern. Choose a catnip toy or a ball too large to swallow instead of stringy playthings, as ASPCA’s seasonal safety advice recommends.

Check cords, ornaments, batteries, and candles

  • Keep electrical cords out of reach or protected from chewing.
  • Secure breakable ornaments and small batteries where your cat cannot bat them down or swallow them.
  • Do not leave lit candles unattended or where a paw or tail could knock one over.

Electrical shock, sharp objects, and fire are distinct hazards identified in the American Veterinary Medical Association’s household hazards guidance.

Choose holiday plants with care

Holiday plants do not all pose the same level or kind of risk. ASPCA identifies lilies as capable of causing kidney failure in cats, making them a particularly serious hazard. Holly and mistletoe can also cause illness. Poinsettias, by contrast, typically cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation according to ASPCA; do not treat them as equivalent to lilies. ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline’s winter holiday poison guidance discuss these seasonal plant risks.

Keep risky plants and floral arrangements inaccessible, or choose faux greenery. Faux décor is not risk-free: a cat can still chew or swallow detachable pieces, so inspect it and place it out of reach. ASPCA offers this alternative in its holiday safety tips.

Keep food, drinks, and rubbish out of reach

Do not let your cat sample holiday meals, drinks, or wrapped food gifts. Ask guests not to feed the cat, and put food away promptly. The hazards identified in seasonal safety guidance include chocolate, alcohol, onion-family ingredients, grapes and raisins, bones, and rich leftovers. See ASPCA’s holiday tips, its seasonal pet-safety release, and Pet Poison Helpline’s holiday party guidance.

Secure rubbish that may contain food scraps, bones, broken ornaments, or packaging. A closed bin and food gifts stored off the floor help prevent a curious cat from finding hazards after the gathering.

Give your cat a quiet retreat during gatherings

Music, fireworks, and party noise can frighten cats. Set up a quiet retreat, such as an interior room, and make sure your cat can stay there undisturbed. Restrict access to the kitchen, tree, or other hazardous areas when needed. Pet Poison Helpline discusses party dangers in its holiday guidance; ASPCA also recommends planning for pets during holiday activity in its seasonal safety tips.

What to do if your cat eats something dangerous

If your cat may have swallowed a toxic plant, food, decoration, or other hazardous substance, promptly call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. Tell the professional what your cat may have eaten and follow their instructions. Do not try to induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional directs you to do so. ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline advise prompt professional contact after a suspected exposure; check their current contact details and service availability directly.
