It can be as simple as a clean cardboard box, a familiar carrier with its door secured open, or a raised perch; a special cat cave is optional. The key is that your cat can choose to use the space without another animal blocking access.
Why do cats need places to hide?
A retreat gives a cat a choice: it can rest out of sight or stay partly concealed while watching what is happening around it. That sense of control matters to a cat’s environment and wellbeing. The AAFP and ISFM describe meeting cats’ environmental needs as essential—not optional—for optimum wellbeing, and say their recommendations apply to pet cats regardless of lifestyle. A hiding place is one part of good care, not a substitute for food, water, a clean litter area, play, social choice, or veterinary attention. If your cat’s behavior changes, illness or another problem may be involved as well as its environment.

What does the evidence show?
Shelter cats chose hiding over tested alternatives
In a 2017 choice study of 26 shelter cats over 10 days, cats spent a median 55% of their time in a hiding compartment. They spent a median 2% in a compartment with a prey-simulating toy and 4% in an empty control compartment. This shows a preference among cats in that novel shelter setting; the percentages should not be treated as a prediction for every household cat. See the 2017 study in Behavioural Processes.

A hiding box helped shelter cats’ stress scores decline faster
A 2019 randomized controlled trial assigned 23 newly admitted Dutch shelter cats to groups with or without a hiding box. Mean Cat-Stress-Score declined faster in the box group, reaching a lower steady state seven days earlier. The box did not significantly affect weight loss, adoption rates, or length of stay. The trial followed shelter cats during their first 12 quarantine days; it does not establish that a hideout will resolve stress or prevent illness in household cats. Read the PLOS ONE trial.
What makes a good hiding place?
The current FelineVMA and International Cat Care caregiver guide recommends a safe, secure retreat that a cat can enter and leave from at least two sides. It describes common preferences for a space sized for one cat, with surrounding sides and an elevated position. A cat may also prefer a spot that conceals its body while leaving a view of the surroundings.

- Easy access: The cat should be able to get in and out without being trapped or cornered.
- Suitable concealment: Some cats prefer a covered box or bed; others may choose a perch that offers a view.
- Stable placement: Set the retreat where it will not tip and where another pet cannot readily block the entrance.
- Cleanable surfaces: Choose something you can keep clean and in good condition.
- Separate options: In a multi-cat home, each cat should have a place of its own.

Does my cat need a cat cave?
No. A purpose-made cave or covered bed is not required. Start with a clean cardboard box, a familiar carrier with its door secured open, or a raised perch your cat already accepts. What matters is a safe retreat the cat can choose to use, not whether it is sold as a cat product.

How many hiding places should I provide?
Provide at least as many single-cat-sized safe places as there are cats in your household, and space them apart so cats can choose to be alone. In a multi-cat home, place retreats within each cat’s core territory where possible, alongside that cat’s access to important resources. How should I introduce a hiding place?
- Offer a familiar option. Put out a clean box, an open and secured carrier, or a stable raised perch.
- Check access. Arrange it so your cat can enter and leave from at least two sides, and position it where another animal cannot easily block it.
- Give each cat a separate choice. Space retreats apart and, when possible, place them in each cat’s core territory.
- Let your cat decide. Allow the cat to use—or ignore—the retreat. Do not pull it out to force interaction.
- Watch for changes. If your cat starts hiding substantially more than usual or develops other behavior changes, contact a veterinarian to discuss possible medical or other causes.
