Tuna is a group of several species, ranging from relatively small skipjack to enormous bluefin. As a practical guide, many tuna encountered in commercial fisheries are roughly 3 to 6 feet long and weigh from tens to several hundred pounds. The species makes the biggest difference: a skipjack may weigh around 40 pounds, while a large Atlantic bluefin can weigh up to about 2,000 pounds.
Why “the average tuna” is difficult to define
“Tuna” is not the name of one fish. It commonly refers to several species, including skipjack, albacore, bigeye, yellowfin, Pacific bluefin, and Atlantic bluefin. These fish differ substantially in their adult size, growth rate, geographic range, and fishery.

A calculated average across all tuna species would be misleading. It might combine small skipjack, fish caught when they are relatively young, and exceptional bluefin weighing hundreds or even thousands of pounds. That number would not represent the tuna most people encounter in a fishery, seafood market, or can of tuna.
Size also depends on whether a source is describing:

- the usual size of fish landed by a particular fishery;
- an average or approximate adult size;
- a species’ common length;
- the maximum size ever reported; or
- a record-sized individual.
Those are different measurements. A fish’s maximum possible size should never be treated as its average size.
Tuna size by species
| Species | Approximate size information | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis |
Atlantic skipjack grow to more than 3 feet and about 40 pounds. Pacific sources describe them as reaching nearly 4 feet and more than 70 pounds. | One of the smaller major commercial tuna. Many are considerably smaller than the upper figures. |
| Albacore tuna Thunnus alalunga |
North Atlantic albacore can exceed 4 feet and reach about 88 pounds. Pacific albacore reach almost 80 pounds and approximately 47 inches. | A medium-sized tuna, commonly around 3 to 4 feet in fishery contexts. |
| Bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus |
Reported maximum lengths are about 5.5 feet in the Atlantic and 6.5 feet in the Pacific. FAO reference material gives an estimated maximum of approximately 220 centimeters and 225 kilograms. | A large tuna, generally larger than skipjack and albacore. |
| Yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares |
Pacific yellowfin can reach about 6 feet and 400 pounds. One tropical Atlantic reference lists a maximum of approximately 210 centimeters and 176 kilograms. | A large, powerful tuna commonly recognized by anglers and seafood buyers. |
| Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis |
Adults are approximately 1.5 meters long and about 60 kilograms on average. The maximum reported size is about 3 meters and 450 kilograms. | Much larger than most skipjack and albacore, but the maximum is exceptional rather than typical. |
| Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus |
Western Atlantic bluefin can reach 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. A commonly reported length is about 200 centimeters fork length; a published maximum weight is about 684 kilograms. | The largest tuna commonly discussed by the public. Giant examples are not representative of the average tuna. |
A simple tuna size ladder
For a quick visual comparison, the major tuna species can be arranged roughly like this:
- Skipjack: often the smallest major commercial tuna; upper figures are around 3 to nearly 4 feet and roughly 40 to more than 70 pounds, depending on region and source.
- Albacore: commonly around 3 to 4 feet, with upper figures near 80 to 88 pounds.
- Bigeye: a large tuna that can reach approximately 5.5 to 6.5 feet.
- Yellowfin: can approach 6 feet and, in Pacific references, about 400 pounds.
- Bluefin: the giants of the group, with adults and exceptional individuals reaching several hundred pounds; Atlantic bluefin can reach about 2,000 pounds.
This ladder describes the broad scale of the species. It does not mean that every fish in a species reaches the listed figure, or that every tuna sold in a market is an adult.

A fishery’s “typical tuna” can be much smaller than the species’ maximum. Fishing gear, location, season, regulations, and the age structure of the local population all affect the fish recorded in landings.

For example, FAO fishery descriptions report typical captured sizes rather than one universal tuna average. In one eastern Atlantic fishery, yellowfin caught by small boats averaged around 120 centimeters, while skipjack were generally around 40 to 55 centimeters in fork length. Those figures describe particular catches, not every yellowfin or skipjack worldwide.
This is why a useful general answer is “several feet long and anywhere from tens to several hundred pounds,” followed immediately by the species name. Without the species and fishery, a more precise average implies a level of accuracy that does not exist.
What is the largest tuna?
Atlantic bluefin tuna is generally regarded as the largest tuna species in commonly cited public and fishery references. Western Atlantic bluefin can reach approximately 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. Other published records list a maximum weight of about 684 kilograms, or roughly 1,500 pounds.

Pacific bluefin are also very large. An approximate adult size is about 1.5 meters and 60 kilograms, while the maximum reported size is about 3 meters and 450 kilograms. This is a useful example of why “adult size” and “maximum size” should be kept separate.
How tuna length is measured
Tuna measurements are not always directly comparable because fisheries and scientific sources may use different definitions of length. Common terms include:
- Total length: a measurement that generally extends to the end of the tail.
- Fork length: measured from the tip of the snout or jaw to the fork in the tail.
- Curved fork length: measured along the curve of the body from the tip of the jaw to the fork of the tail.
Curved fork length is especially relevant in some recreational-fishing regulations. It follows the body’s curve rather than measuring in a straight line. A length reported as fork length should not automatically be compared with a total-length figure as though both were measured the same way.
When comparing a landed fish with a species description, check three things: the species, the units, and the measurement method. A reported length without those details can be surprisingly ambiguous.

Does the tuna in a can have an average size?
Not in a useful universal sense. Canned tuna products may contain different tuna species, and labeling practices vary by market. It is incorrect to assume that all canned tuna is skipjack. Product labels may identify skipjack, albacore, yellowfin, or another permitted species depending on the country and product.
The fish used for canned products may also be processed into portions, loins, or flakes, so the size of the original whole fish is not normally apparent from the package. The label is the appropriate source for the species and product description.
So, how big is an average tuna fish?
If “average” means a rough everyday picture rather than a scientifically calculated global mean, many major commercial tuna are about 3 to 6 feet long and weigh from 40 pounds to several hundred pounds. Skipjack and albacore are usually toward the smaller end; bigeye and yellowfin are larger; bluefin can be dramatically larger.
The most accurate one-sentence answer is: an ordinary tuna does not have one standard size because tuna includes multiple species, but many are several feet long and weigh tens to hundreds of pounds, while bluefin can reach exceptional weights of more than 1,000 pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average weight of a tuna?
There is no scientifically meaningful average for all tuna species combined. Depending on the species and fishery, a tuna may weigh around 40 pounds, roughly 80 to 400 pounds, or several hundred pounds. Large Atlantic bluefin can reach about 2,000 pounds, but that is an exceptional maximum rather than an average.
How long is a normal tuna?
Many tuna encountered in fisheries are roughly 3 to 6 feet long. Skipjack and albacore are commonly at the smaller end, while bigeye, yellowfin, and bluefin can be much larger. The exact length also depends on whether the source uses total length, fork length, or curved fork length.
Which tuna species is the biggest?
Atlantic bluefin tuna is generally considered the largest tuna species in commonly cited references. Western Atlantic individuals can reach about 13 feet and 2,000 pounds, although such fish are exceptional.
Is skipjack tuna small?
Compared with other major commercial tuna, yes. Atlantic skipjack can exceed 3 feet and reach about 40 pounds, while Pacific references give an upper size of nearly 4 feet and more than 70 pounds. Many skipjack caught in fisheries are smaller than those maximum figures.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tuna range from relatively small skipjack to giant bluefin, so a single global average would be misleading. A practical estimate for many tuna is about 3–6 feet and tens to several hundred pounds, but the species, region, age, fishery, and measurement method determine the real answer.
