Black-capped chickadees survive winter by combining four strategies: they search bark, twigs and foliage for tiny prey; eat seeds and berries; scatter-hoard individual food items for later; and conserve heat in sheltered roosts by lowering body temperature when conditions demand it. No single trick guarantees survival. Food shortages, cold exposure and each bird’s physiological capacity all matter.
This account centers on the black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus), the species covered by the strongest evidence here. “Chickadee” is a broader common name, so findings should not automatically be applied to every species.

The winter problem chickadees must solve
Winter compresses the time available to feed. Daylight is short, insects are harder to find, and a small bird loses heat rapidly because its surface area is large relative to its body volume. A chickadee must therefore obtain enough energy before dusk, retain or recover food when conditions improve, and reduce overnight heat loss without remaining dangerously cold.
The solutions work as a sequence rather than as isolated adaptations. Daytime foraging supplies immediate calories, caching moves surplus into future meals, and a protected roost plus controlled nighttime cooling reduces the energy required while the bird sleeps.

How chickadees find food in winter
They inspect the surfaces other birds overlook
The National Park Service describes black-capped chickadees searching among twigs and sometimes hanging upside down. That posture gives them access to the undersides of branches, where they can locate insect eggs tucked into cracks. The Forest Service species review broadens the list of maneuvers: chickadees glean prey from surfaces, hang from leaves or twigs, hover, probe crevices and occasionally catch insects in flight.
These are active searches, not random picking. A chickadee can move from trunk to branch to foliage, changing its position and angle as it checks potential hiding places. In winter, eggs of moths and other invertebrates remain important animal foods even when adult insects are scarce.
The winter diet is mixed
The Forest Service review estimates that approximately half of a black-capped chickadee’s winter food is animal matter, with the remainder coming from seeds and berries. The proportions are approximate, not a fixed menu for every habitat or date. Local weather, plant crops and prey availability can shift what an individual finds.

The agency describes this as a way to maximize calories gained relative to the effort required. The Forest Service review also records chickadees taking suet. Those observations show that feeders can supplement natural foraging; they do not show that a feeder is required for a wild chickadee to survive.
Why upside-down feeding is useful
Many small prey items are concealed where a normally perched bird cannot see them. Hanging below a twig or leaf lets a chickadee search the underside and probe narrow cracks. Hovering and short flights add access to surfaces that cannot be reached from a single perch. These behaviors expand the usable food supply at a time when exposed insects are limited.
How scatter-hoarding carries food into the future
One item, one hiding place
Black-capped chickadees scatter-hoard rather than placing an entire food supply in one store. They hide individual items in many locations and return to retrieve them later. The Forest Service review lists bark, dead leaves, conifer needles, dirt and snow among reported cache sites.

Separating caches limits the damage if one hiding place is discovered, covered or spoiled. It also lets a bird exploit brief periods of abundance: a seed or other item found during the day can become available after a storm or during a poor foraging morning.
Memory is part of the adaptation
A University of Puget Sound natural-history exhibit says chickadees remember cache sites for at least a month. That statement should be read as the exhibit’s evidence summary, not as a universal expiration date for every cache or every individual. The time a particular bird can relocate a store will depend on the item, the hiding surface, weather and the bird’s experience.
Researchers studying Mountain Chickadees have emphasized the importance of memory as well as the amount of food stored. Benjamin Sonnenberg, quoted in a 2023 University of Nevada, Reno report, said: “It appears that the memory ability and not just the amount of food they cache directly affects chickadees’ overwinter survival.” The quotation concerns that research context and should not be treated as a measurement of every chickadee species.
Caching is not the same as eating at the feeder
A bird carrying a seed away may be storing it rather than consuming it immediately. This distinction matters when interpreting feeder visits: frequent trips can represent collection for later use. The stored food then complements, rather than replaces, searches for natural prey, berries and seeds.
Where chickadees sleep when it is cold
Sheltered roosts reduce exposure
Black-capped chickadees roost in dense vegetation or cavities. The Forest Service review identifies thick vegetation and cavities as especially important on cold nights. The National Park Service gives dense pine boughs as an example of shelter that can be slightly warmer than the surrounding air.

Body temperature can fall during the night
The National Park Service describes two complementary calorie-saving techniques on cold winter nights: sheltered roosting and a gradual nighttime drop in body temperature. Its species page gives a typical change from 108°F to 86°F. Those are the agency’s illustrative figures, last updated on October 8, 2021, not a universal measurement for every chickadee, roost or weather event.
The Forest Service review refers to this regulated hypothermia as night torpor. It is controlled rather than accidental chilling: the bird permits body temperature and metabolic demand to fall, then returns to normal as conditions and activity require.
What the 2026 cold-challenge study adds
Most tested birds cooled more at 3°C than at 20°C
Gumin Jung and colleagues’ 2026 study brought 10 wild black-capped chickadees into captivity and compared responses at 20°C and 3°C. Most of the tested birds lowered body temperature more at 3°C and lost more fat overnight in the colder treatment.

The key result was not a single “chickadee temperature.” Individuals differed. Birds that showed larger body-temperature decreases had lower overnight fat loss, while some birds did not lower body temperature across the two conditions. The finding supports flexible, individual regulation rather than a rule that every chickadee uses the same degree of hypothermia.
Why the variation matters
A deeper temperature drop can reduce the energy needed to remain warm, but the response must remain compatible with waking, escaping predators and resuming feeding. A bird’s condition, prior experience and immediate environment may affect how much cooling is useful. The study demonstrates an association between the size of the temperature decrease and overnight fat conservation; it does not establish that cooling alone determines survival.
Food, fat and the limits of a single explanation
Winter malnutrition is a major suspected cause of death
The Forest Service review identifies winter malnutrition as a major believed cause of chickadee mortality. A bird that cannot obtain enough food before nightfall has less energy available for thermoregulation and fewer reserves to draw on during a storm or food shortage.

That does not mean every death follows the same pathway. Weather, shelter, predation and individual condition interact. Caching can spread risk across days, but caches may be inaccessible under snow or ice, and a bird still has to locate enough food to build reserves.
Thermogenic capacity is linked to survival within a winter
A separate 2017 study in Physiological and Biochemical Zoology found that winter maximal metabolic rate was positively related to survival within a winter. In other words, greater measured capacity to produce heat was associated with better survival during that winter’s conditions.
The relationship did not hold among different winters. That qualification is important: physiological capacity matters, but it does not by itself predict population outcomes when weather, food supply and other conditions change. The evidence supports a multi-factor explanation rather than a claim that one metabolic measurement decides which birds live.

What feeder observations can and cannot show
Black-oil sunflower seed and suet are reasonable optional foods for people who choose to feed wild birds. Black-capped chickadees may carry food away and cache it, so a feeder can become one source among many in their winter foraging circuit.
Nothing in the black-capped chickadee evidence establishes that a feeder is necessary for natural winter survival. Wild birds also use insect eggs, other invertebrates, berries and seeds found in vegetation, bark and ground-level hiding places.

A six-year study summarized by the University of Nevada, Reno followed Mountain Chickadees at two elevations in California’s Sierra Nevada. Researchers reported no significant difference in reproduction between birds that used feeders and those that did not, and no difference in population growth or decline in that studied population. Birds often cached food taken from feeders instead of eating it immediately.

Joseph Welklin, quoted in the report, said: “Our study shows that feeding these mountain chickadees in the wild during the winter has no effect on their population dynamics.” The result applies to those Mountain Chickadees, elevations and study conditions; it is not a universal test of black-capped chickadees or of every feeding practice.
Clean feeders if you provide them
The same University of Nevada, Reno report recommends cleaning feeders regularly because feeders bring birds into closer contact. Cleaning is a management step for the people providing supplemental food, not evidence that feeding is required. If a feeder becomes visibly dirty or food is wet and spoiled, remove the material, clean the feeder and replace it with fresh food before resuming service.
Putting the survival strategy together
During daylight, a black-capped chickadee searches multiple layers of habitat, from trunks and branches to foliage, using postures and movements that expose hidden prey. It adds seeds and berries to that animal food and may take sunflower seed or suet when available. Surplus items are divided among many caches, whose locations can be remembered and revisited.
As night approaches, the bird trades active foraging for energy conservation. A cavity or dense boughs provides physical shelter, while regulated cooling can lower the energy cost of maintaining body temperature. The 2026 results show that the amount of cooling varies between individuals, and survival research shows that food balance and heat-producing capacity both contribute to outcomes.
That combination explains why chickadees can remain present through severe winter nights without relying on a single behavior. They acquire food flexibly, store it redundantly, choose protected sleeping places and adjust physiology to the conditions they actually face.
