Are Biewer Terriers Good Family Dogs? Temperament, Exercise, and Care

Biewer Terriers are affectionate, playful companion dogs that can suit many families, but their tiny size, daily coat care and need for supervised child interactions require planning.

Yes—many Biewer Terriers can be excellent family companions when their home can provide gentle handling, daily companionship, regular walks and play, and consistent coat and dental care. The breed is described as affectionate, loyal, playful and generally friendly, but a breed profile is not a guarantee of any individual dog’s behavior.

The main family trade-offs are their very small size and their long, maintenance-heavy coat. Young children need close adult supervision, and prospective owners should be comfortable brushing, checking teeth, trimming nails and monitoring health with a veterinarian.

What makes a Biewer Terrier a good (or difficult) family fit?

The American Kennel Club’s Biewer Terrier profile calls the breed “a very dedicated, loyal family member and friendly with strangers.” The parent-club standard describes Biewers as intelligent, loyal, affectionate and playful. Those traits support a positive family-dog profile: a Biewer often wants to stay near its people, take part in household activities and turn short play sessions into social time.

That description is about breed tendencies, not a promise about every puppy or adult. Early socialization, training, health, previous experiences and the individual dog’s temperament all matter. Meet the particular dog, observe how it responds to handling and unfamiliar people, and ask a responsible breeder or rescue for an honest history before deciding.

Household factor Why it matters with a Biewer Terrier Question to ask yourself
Children’s age and dog experience A 4–8-pound dog can be injured by a fall, squeeze or rough game even when nobody intends harm. Can an adult supervise every interaction and teach children gentle handling?
Grooming tolerance The long coat needs frequent brushing, and mats can make routine care uncomfortable. Will someone brush consistently, or will you maintain a shorter trim?
Daily companionship Biewers are companion dogs that generally enjoy family play, outings and indoor activities. Will the dog receive regular interaction rather than being left alone for long periods?
Preventive care Small-dog dental concerns and recommended screening tests make veterinary planning important. Can you budget time and money for dental care, checkups and testing records?

There is no validated score that ranks a family as suitable or unsuitable. The practical decision is whether your household can meet these needs every day and throughout a potentially long life.

Biewer Terrier temperament in family life

Affectionate, loyal companionship

Biewers are typically people-oriented and playful. Family members may find that the dog follows them from room to room, settles nearby and eagerly joins a game or short outing. Their small stature makes indoor companionship easy in many homes, provided the dog has a safe place to rest and is not treated as a toy.

Friendly does not mean automatically social in every situation

The AKC describes the breed as friendly with strangers, while the breed standard emphasizes loyalty and affection. Individual dogs can still be cautious, excitable or overwhelmed in busy environments. Introduce visitors calmly, let the dog approach at its own pace and reward quiet behavior. Avoid forcing greetings or assuming that a friendly breed description eliminates the need for socialization.

Training and boundaries

Intelligence and playfulness can make reward-based training enjoyable. Start with name recognition, gentle handling, recall indoors, a settle cue and polite greetings. Keep sessions short and upbeat; a tiny dog can tire mentally even when it still wants to play. Consistent household rules prevent confusion—for example, decide whether furniture access is allowed and use the same cues for every family member.

Are Biewer Terriers safe with children?

They can live successfully with children, but their size changes the safety plan. AKC advises that dogs should always be supervised around young children and children who have had little exposure to dogs. For a Biewer, supervision is especially important because a dropped or stepped-on dog can suffer serious injury.

Rules for adults

  • Stay within arm’s reach during interactions involving toddlers or inexperienced children.
  • Give the dog a child-free retreat, such as a crate or gated bed area, and make that space off-limits to children.
  • Prevent climbing, carrying, hugging, chasing, wrestling and taking food or toys from the dog.
  • Separate dog and child during meals, naps and high-energy play.
  • Teach children to call an adult when the dog moves away, growls, freezes or shows other signs of discomfort.

Rules for children

  • Pet with an open hand on the shoulder or side rather than pulling hair, ears or tail.
  • Never pick up the dog unless an adult has taught and is supervising the technique.
  • Do not disturb the dog while it is eating, sleeping or hiding.
  • Use floor-level games, such as rolling an appropriately sized ball, instead of rough games.

Breed descriptions do not provide a population-level child-bite rate or guarantee a particular dog’s behavior. A family should judge the individual dog and its management plan, not rely on the breed label alone.

How much exercise does a Biewer Terrier need?

Biewer Terriers are active enough to enjoy movement but are not generally high-endurance dogs. In an AKC recognition announcement, the breed is described as easygoing and not needing a great deal of exercise; the same announcement says daily walks and playtime provide the activity they need. AKC’s breed article also recommends walks, family play and indoor activities. No universal minutes-per-day target is specified, so avoid treating a particular number as a medical requirement.

A practical daily activity pattern

  1. Walk: Offer a safe, age-appropriate walk and allow time for sniffing rather than rushing for distance.
  2. Play: Add several brief play sessions with a toy sized for a very small dog.
  3. Training: Practice tricks, recall or a settle cue for mental exercise.
  4. Indoor enrichment: On poor-weather days, try hide-and-seek, rolling a ball along the floor or searching for a safely hidden treat under supervision, activities specifically suggested by AKC.
  5. Adjust: Puppies, seniors and dogs with health problems need individualized plans from a veterinarian.

Biewers are described as agile and interested in outings, so variety can keep them engaged. Watch the dog rather than chasing a quota: persistent panting, reluctance to continue, limping, weakness or unusual recovery time means the session should stop and a veterinarian should be consulted. Conversely, destructive chewing, frantic attention-seeking or inability to settle can indicate that the dog needs more appropriate interaction, training or enrichment—not simply a much longer walk.

Coat, grooming and routine care

Brushing a full coat

The AKC profile says the long coat should be brushed daily. Its breed article, citing breed representatives, explains that a full silky coat may need daily or every-other-day grooming, while a short puppy cut may be brushed weekly. Those frequencies are practical guidance, not a guarantee for every coat; texture, length, activity and matting tendency change the workload.

  • DURABLE & LONG-LASTING - Made from high-quality materials, this brush is built to last and withstand frequent use.
  • EASY TO CLEAN & MAINTAIN - The slicker brush features allows easy removal of loose hair from the pins after each use.

Brush in small sections down to the skin, paying particular attention to friction points such as behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar or harness. Work slowly around tangles. If a mat is tight against the skin, ask a professional groomer rather than pulling hard and causing pain. A shorter trim can reduce brushing time, but it does not remove the need for skin checks, bathing, drying and regular grooming appointments.

Other routine tasks

  • Teeth: Small dogs can develop retained baby teeth and tartar. Establish tooth brushing with a dog-safe product and ask your veterinarian how often the mouth should be examined.
  • Nails: Check regularly and trim before nails become long enough to alter the dog’s footing.
  • Ears and skin: Inspect during grooming for redness, odor, discharge, parasites or irritated skin. Seek veterinary advice instead of inserting products or cotton swabs deeply.
  • Handling practice: Pair brushing, paw touches and mouth checks with rewards from puppyhood so necessary care does not become a struggle.

Health questions to discuss with a veterinarian and breeder

The Biewer Terrier Club of America health statement dated December 2025 says the breed is relatively young and has few known health issues at this time, but it also identifies concerns that deserve attention. It notes small-dog dental problems, including retained baby teeth and tartar, and describes a sensitive gastrointestinal system as having been observed. These comments do not publish disease-prevalence rates and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that an individual Biewer will be healthy.

Screening categories named by the parent club

Screening or issue What a buyer should do
Eye examination Ask for the relevant veterinary or ophthalmic records and confirm what was examined and when.
PRA-PRCD Request documented testing results for the parents; ask how the results affect breeding decisions.
PLL Ask the breeder to explain the test result and provide the record rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
Patellar-luxation evaluation Ask whether the parents have a documented evaluation and discuss what follow-up is appropriate.

The BTCA statement lists additional tests as optional. A responsible breeder should provide records, explain limitations and welcome questions. A veterinarian can tailor examinations, dental prevention, diet and gastrointestinal advice to the dog in front of you. Seek prompt care for persistent vomiting or diarrhea, difficulty eating, eye changes, lameness, pain or sudden behavior changes.

Size, lifespan and everyday handling

AKC lists Biewer Terriers at 7–11 inches tall, 4–8 pounds and a 16-year life expectancy. These are breed-profile figures, not a prediction for an individual dog. Their small body affects practical choices: use a secure harness, prevent access to high furniture where a jump could end badly, and check that toys, chews and collars are genuinely sized for a tiny dog.

A long expected lifespan also means planning beyond the cute puppy stage. Families should agree on who will handle grooming, walks, training, veterinary visits and care during travel or illness. Include the dog in household emergency planning, with a carrier and up-to-date veterinary information.

Choosing a puppy or adult Biewer Terrier

Questions for a breeder

  • Can you show the parents’ eye, PRA-PRCD, PLL and patellar-luxation records?
  • How are puppies socialized to handling, household sounds, grooming and visitors?
  • What health, temperament or gastrointestinal patterns have you observed in relatives?
  • What grooming routine and diet has the puppy already experienced?
  • What support and return policy apply if the placement is not successful?

Questions for a rescue or rehoming organization

  • How does the dog behave around children, strangers, other animals and handling?
  • Has the dog shown guarding, fear, separation distress or sensitivity to grooming?
  • What veterinary records, dental findings and medications are available?
  • Can the family arrange a gradual introduction and a quiet retreat in the home?

Spend time observing the dog rather than selecting solely by appearance. A calm adult dog with a known history may suit one family better than a puppy, while a carefully socialized puppy may suit another. Either way, allow decompression after coming home and introduce children, visitors, grooming and new environments gradually.

What the current breed standard does—and does not—tell you

The AKC Gazette reported extensive revisions to the Biewer Terrier standard approved by the AKC Board and effective April 30, 2026. The BTCA standard describes conformation and breed characteristics for judging. Show-standard wording can change how a dog is evaluated in the ring, but it does not establish how a particular pet will behave with your children, how much grooming that dog’s coat will require or whether it will remain healthy.

A realistic family-care checklist

  • Adults can supervise every interaction between the dog and young or inexperienced children.
  • The household can provide daily walks, play and companionship without promising an unsupported exercise number.
  • Someone can brush a full coat daily or every other day, or maintain a shorter trim with professional help.
  • The family is prepared for tooth brushing, nail trims, ear and skin checks and regular veterinary visits.
  • Before purchase or adoption, the family will review available health records and meet the individual dog.
  • The home has a safe retreat, secure handling plan and appropriately sized equipment and toys.

If those conditions fit your household, a Biewer Terrier can be a lively, affectionate companion that participates in family life without requiring marathon exercise. If daily grooming, close child supervision or small-dog preventive care would be difficult, the breed may be a poor match even though its general temperament is appealing.
