How Do Guppies Act When Pregnant? Signs and What to Do

A growing belly, a more visible gravid spot, hiding, and reduced appetite can be clues—but no single sign confirms pregnancy or predicts exactly when a guppy will give birth.

Pregnant guppies often develop a gradually larger abdomen and a more noticeable dark gravid spot near the vent. As birth approaches, the belly may look squarer, and some females hide or eat less. These signs can support pregnancy, but none gives a precise birth date, and a spot or swollen belly alone cannot confirm it.

What a pregnant guppy may look like

A gradually enlarging belly

A steadily enlarging abdomen is one of the more useful clues, especially when you have observed the change over time. Close to birth, the abdomen may take on a squarer shape. A single view is less informative than a change you can compare with the fish’s usual appearance.

The gravid spot

The gravid spot is a darkened area near the vent, beneath the tail. It may become more prominent as pregnancy progresses. But it is not a reliable pregnancy test by itself: the spot can be visible in female guppies that are not pregnant, and advice on Petco’s Q&A page conflicts about whether a spot indicates pregnancy. Treat it as one clue alongside body shape and change over time. Petco’s guppy pregnancy Q&A and Aquarium Source’s guppy care guide describe these signs.

What behavior changes can mean

Some females seek shelter, hide more, or show less interest in food shortly before giving birth. These are possible near-birth clues, not a dependable countdown: a guppy may hide or skip food for other reasons, too. A fish that seems persistently unwell or has worsening abnormal behavior needs a fish-health assessment rather than an assumption that birth is imminent.

  • Medium Hatching Box: With inner size of 5.3" L x 3.5" W x 3.9" H, it protects newborn fry from being eaten or attacked, improving the survival rate of newborn fish.
  • Versatile Uses: 2 removable separators constitute 3 rooms. The bottom is the hatchery for baby fish, and another 2 rooms can be used to isolate aggressive or sick fish.
  • Floating Design: The balancing panel and 2 handles help keep the box floating in water, it can also be secured inside the tank with 2 suction cups. Space-saving during use.
  • Acrylic Material: The highly transparent acrylic box allows you to watch the breeding process or fish fighting without any barriers, bringing you with endless enjoyment.
  • Easy to Use: The incubator can be easily installed or disassembled for cleaning without any tool. And its side vents ensure optimum water flow, requiring no heater or air pump.

Aquarium Source also mentions labored breathing and body convulsions near the end of pregnancy. Because these can look like distress rather than ordinary behavior, do not dismiss them as routine pregnancy signs; seek appropriate fish-health advice if they occur.

How long pregnancy lasts—and why signs cannot set a date

Care guides give approximate, not fish-specific, timing. Petco’s veterinary Q&A describes gestation as approximately 30 days. Aquarium Source gives an average of about 21–31 days, with rare cases up to 35 days, and says conditions such as temperature, food availability, and general health can affect duration. Think in terms of roughly three to four weeks, not a precise due date. Aquarium Source describes birth as lasting two to six hours.

Pawfly Aquarium Fish Breeding Box Acrylic Hatchery Incubator Tank with Suction Cups Small Isolation Box for Baby Small Fish Shrimp and Betta
  • Tiny Hatching Box: With inner size of 4.2" L x 2.7" W x 2.8" H, it protects newborn fry from being eaten or attacked. Suitable for feeding tiny fish or shrimp ONLY.
  • Slotted Bottom Panel: It can effectively prevent soiling of the box by debris, food residues or excrement, and the slim slots in it keep the newborn fish from escaping.
  • Floating Design: The balancing panel and 2 handles help keep the box floating on water, it can also be secured inside the tank with 2 suction cups.

When a swollen belly may not mean pregnancy

A larger abdomen can have causes other than pregnancy. Aquarium Source notes that dropsy and swim bladder disease can also cause abdominal swelling. Look at the overall pattern and the fish’s condition, rather than diagnosing pregnancy from a spot or swelling alone. If the fish’s behavior or appearance is persistently abnormal or deteriorating, consult an appropriate fish-health professional.

How to prepare if you want to raise the fry

Adult guppies may eat newborn fry, so fry need places to hide if you want to improve their chances of survival. Preparation is optional: a female does not have to be moved simply because pregnancy is suspected.

BaoZqua Dual-Chamber Fish Breeder Box for Fish Tank, Guppy Fry Nursery
  • Breed, Isolate, Raise - All-in-1 Box: Serves as a hatchery for livebearers like guppies and mollies, an isolation/quarantine cage for sick or aggressive fish (e.g., bettas), a dedicated acclimation space for introducing new fish, and a protected zone where shrimp can molt or feed with confidence.
  • Dual-Chamber & Dual-Layer Design: Dual chambers (with a removable divider panel) let you keep fish or fry apart as needed. The upper compartment lets a pregnant fish give birth, and newborn fry drop into the lower nursery section—shielding them from adult fish and improving survival outcomes.
  • Dual Mounting Methods: The breeder box easily attaches with the included hanging hook or suction cups for flexible placement inside the tank. The adjustable spacer ring sets the box at the right distance from the tank wall so fish won’t get trapped. (For stability, keep the breeder box fully submerged during use.)
  • Gentle on Delicate Fry: A secure lid with a feeding opening helps keep fish from jumping out. Fine 0.04" slit vents deliver ample water flow through the breeder while keeping even the tiniest fry contained. Crystal-clear walls turn the unit into a fish tank viewing box for observing behavior and health at a glance without disturbance.
  • Easy Assembly & Complete Kit: Assembles in minutes with no tools required, and the removable bottom tray makes it simple to clean or release fish. Includes a fine-mesh net for safely catching or transferring fry, and cleaning pipettes for feeding babies or removing waste. Comes with all the accessories you need for convenient fish breeding and isolation.
  • Provide dense cover: fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or guppy grass can give fry hiding places.
  • Use mesh or a separate setup if appropriate: Aquarium Source lists breeding mesh and breeder boxes as options; Petco also mentions a separate grow-out tank. These are alternatives, not mandatory equipment.

Choose a setup that suits your tank and care routine. Cover can help fry avoid adult fish, but it cannot guarantee that they will survive.
