The frequently quoted figure is 233 freshwater species. A historical checklist published by M. Ramzan Mirza in 2003 recorded 183 freshwater fish species from Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, belonging to 83 genera, 26 families, and 11 orders. That checklist remains a useful historical reference, but it is too old to be treated as Pakistan’s final present-day count. Taxonomic revisions and later records have changed the picture. [c004]

A more recent FishBase country checklist gives a different accounting. It lists 243 freshwater species reported from Pakistan, divided into:
- 231 species currently present;
- 9 species possibly present; and
- 3 species considered absent, incorrectly reported, or otherwise not established.
This distinction matters. “Reported from Pakistan” is broader than “currently confirmed as present.” Therefore, 231 is the more conservative current-present figure within that database, while 243 includes records that require qualification. [c003]
Where do Pakistan’s freshwater fish live?
Pakistan’s inland fish fauna is associated largely with the Indus River system and its tributaries. Important habitats include:

- irrigation canals;

- reservoirs and headworks; and
- estuaries and other places where freshwater meets the sea.
These habitats support fish adapted to very different conditions, from cold mountain streams to warm lowland rivers and slow-moving canals. Official fisheries materials may report fewer orders or families than global databases because they can use an older or narrower classification system. For example, a Punjab Fisheries Department manual describes freshwater fishes using nine orders and 20 families. Examples of freshwater fish found in Pakistan
Examples associated with Pakistan’s inland waters include:
- Rohu (Labeo rohita), an important South Asian carp;
- Catla (Labeo catla), another widely known carp;
- Mahseer, including the golden mahseer (Tor putitora);
- Snowtrout species from colder, higher-elevation waters;
- snakeheads;
- featherbacks;
- catfishes;
- loaches; and
- Hilsa, a migratory fish associated with river and coastal environments.
Popular educational sources often identify the golden mahseer as Pakistan’s national fish. That designation should be checked against the relevant Pakistani authority before being presented as an official national-symbol claim, because informal references do not always use national designations consistently. Why local surveys do not produce Pakistan’s national total
Fish counts can vary dramatically from one river or sampling site to another. That is expected: a survey records the species found in a particular place, during a particular period, using particular sampling methods.

A separate study of a surveyed section of the River Ravi recorded 38 species. These are site-level results, not numbers that can be added together to calculate Pakistan’s national fauna. How many marine fish are in Pakistan?
The traditional national estimate assigns 298 species to Pakistan’s marine fish fauna. Pakistan’s coastline borders the northern Arabian Sea, and its marine and brackish environments include:
- coastal waters;
- estuaries;
- tidal creeks;
- mangrove habitats;
- nearshore waters; and
- the country’s wider maritime fishing grounds.
Marine fish documented in or associated with these environments include sharks, rays and other batoid fishes, groupers, sardines, and many commercially important coastal species. Some fish move between habitats during their life cycle, so a simple freshwater-versus-marine division can obscure species that use brackish water, estuaries, or both river and sea environments.

The Food and Agriculture Organization’s field guide for Pakistan covers commercially important marine and brackish-water bony fishes, sharks, batoid fishes, lobsters, shrimps, crabs, and cephalopods. It is valuable for fisheries identification, but it is explicitly a guide to commercially important resources rather than a complete inventory of every fish species occurring in Pakistani waters. Pakistan’s reports to the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission also rely on earlier marine-fish checklists and FAO identification guides as important sources for documenting marine resources. This supports using 298 as a conventional published estimate, while also explaining why it should not be mistaken for a newly verified, exhaustive 2026 marine checklist. [c010]
Why do different sources give different numbers?
- Geographic boundaries differ. Some sources cover political Pakistan, while others include Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, inland waters only, coastal waters, or the country’s maritime zone.
- Habitats are classified differently. One list may separate freshwater, marine, estuarine, and brackish-water fish. Another may combine them. Migratory species make these boundaries especially difficult.
- Taxonomy changes. Fish species may be split into multiple species, merged under a synonym, moved to a different genus, or removed when an old distribution record is rejected.
- Evidence standards vary. A historical checklist may list every species reported in the literature. A modern database may separate confirmed, possible, absent, and erroneous records. FishBase’s categories demonstrate this difference clearly. [c003]

Do not add FishBase’s 243 freshwater records to the 298 marine estimate. Those figures come from different accounting systems and may not use identical geographic, taxonomic, or habitat rules. Doing so could double-count species or combine incompatible categories.

Choose a regional or South Asian reference where possible, and check its publication date: an older book can be excellent for identification while still using scientific names or classifications that have since changed.
