How Many Fish Species Are There in Canada?

Canada has hundreds of fish species, but published totals count different waters and groups. Here’s what the available Canadian figures actually mean.

Canada has hundreds of fish species across freshwater and marine habitats, but there is no single exact nationwide count established by the sources cited here. “Types” is best understood as species; published totals vary because they cover different regions and habitats and use different rules for which fish to include.

Why there is no single definitive count

A national total depends on what a count includes: freshwater or marine fish, species that migrate between the two, brackish-water records, introduced species, and occasional visitors. Checklists also change as scientists revise taxonomy and learn more about where species occur.

For example, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) says Canadian waters contain “more than 160 species of fish and seafood.” That is the department’s broad public-facing wording, not a fish-only census. Its full sentence is: “Our clean, cold waters contain more than 160 species of fish and seafood, and our fresh, frozen, smoked and canned products are in high demand in every corner of the globe.” Read DFO’s statement.

What published counts cover

Count Scope and qualification
207 fish species A DFO-hosted report’s account of Canada’s freshwater fish fauna; this is a report-specific freshwater count, not a current all-Canada total. See the freshwater fish report.
189 species An annotated checklist of Canadian Arctic marine fish. Extralimital and brackish-water species are listed separately rather than included in this total. See the Arctic marine checklist.
190 freshwater and anadromous fishes; 304 marine and anadromous fishes A DFO Central and Arctic Region assessment concerning 2015 status. These are regional assessment groups, not national unique-species totals; anadromous fishes are assessed in both groups. See the regional assessment.

These figures cannot be added or treated as competing estimates of the same total. They differ in geography, habitat, overlap, exclusions, and the taxonomic treatment used.

How to explore Canadian fish species

DFO’s Browse all aquatic species page provides descriptions and habitat information, with categories including freshwater, finfish, groundfish, diadromous, and pelagic species. DFO describes the page as covering popular species living in Canadian waters, so use it as a browsing resource rather than a complete checklist.
