Those figures reflect different services and are not guaranteed local quotes. Pet Sitters International’s professional-sitter survey reports different averages for defined visit lengths, including $25.49 for a 31-minute basic visit and $96.99 for an overnight visit averaging 12.76 hours. Match the benchmark to the care you need, then compare current local quotes for the same schedule and scope.
What should you budget for each type of dog sitting?
Use the rates below as U.S. reference points, not as a price guarantee. Rover’s figures are based on sitters on its marketplace and are accurate as of September 2025. PSI’s figures come from its 2024 State of the Industry Survey of professional pet sitters. Because the sources describe different populations and service periods, their figures are not interchangeable.

Why can the same kind of sitting cost more in one place?
Local cost of living and the available providers affect rates. In Rover’s September 2025 data for the 25 cities it lists, in-home house-sitting averages ranged from $43.32 in Oklahoma City to $80.72 in San Francisco. That is the spread among those listed cities, not a nationwide minimum and maximum. Request quotes from sitters near you and compare them against the same care schedule.

What changes a dog sitter’s quote?
The service label alone does not define the work. Rover describes a drop-in as a visit to refresh food and water, provide a potty break, and give the dog attention; house sitting means the sitter stays overnight in your home; boarding means your dog stays at the sitter’s home. Before comparing prices, pin down what the arrangement covers.
- Time and schedule: Visit length, overnight hours, daytime coverage, walks, and how long the dog will be alone.
- Your dog’s needs: Number and age of dogs, puppy care, medication, mobility support, and required supervision.
- Sitter and location: Experience or certifications, travel to a remote home, and local market conditions.
- Extra work and timing: Household chores, holiday dates, last-minute booking, and any additional-pet charges.
Rover identifies these as factors that may affect a rate, but fees vary by sitter and service. Ask which are included in the quoted base rate and which cost extra. Rover’s rate guide and meet-and-greet worksheet describe the service distinctions and booking questions.

How to compare quotes fairly
- Match the service and hours. Compare drop-ins with drop-ins, overnight care with overnight care, and boarding with boarding. Clarify the length of visits or overnights and whether daytime care is included.
- Describe the care required. Give each sitter the same information about the dogs, medication, mobility, supervision, and routine.
- Compare similar providers. A professional pet-care business and a casual hobby sitter may not have the same credentials or overhead, including insurance or business licenses where necessary. PSI cautions that their rates are not always like-for-like; local rates can vary substantially. Check local professional sitters, boarding facilities, and dog daycares as appropriate.
- Compare the final total. Ask about additional-pet fees, holiday or rush charges, travel, and household tasks rather than judging by the advertised base rate alone.
What to confirm before booking
Use a meet-and-greet or care-plan discussion to make sure the sitter understands your dog’s routine and your expectations. Cover:
- Feeding times, food instructions, medication and how it is administered, allergies, and chronic conditions.
- Walk schedule, sleeping arrangements, expected time alone, and any safety concerns.
- Home access, emergency contact information, and your veterinarian’s details.
- What the quoted price includes, how extra pets or special care affect it, and what happens if your return time changes.
Rover’s meet-and-greet worksheet prompts owners and sitters to discuss these care-plan details. Use the conversation to judge fit as well as price; the available rate data do not establish that the lowest quote is the best choice.

Should you tip a dog sitter?
Rover says tipping is not always necessary, particularly when a self-employed sitter sets their own rates, but describes it as a kind gesture. Its guide suggests 10–20% for short stays and a flat $20–$100 for longer or more complex stays. These are Rover’s suggestions, not a universal obligation or a documented standard followed everywhere. Rover’s rate guide provides the platform’s tipping guidance.
