There is no established daily cup amount or calorie target for Catahoula Bulldogs. Start with the feeding directions on the specific complete-and-balanced food you use, then adjust the measured ration to your dog’s life stage, weight trend, activity and body condition. Ask your veterinarian to set an individual calorie target if growth or weight management is a concern. A cup measure alone is not a reliable prescription: different foods can contain different calories per cup.
Why there is no universal Catahoula Bulldog portion
The available breed-specific feeding guidance covers Catahoula Leopard Dogs, not a validated feeding chart for the Catahoula Bulldog crossbreed. The reviewed sources do not establish a Catahoula Bulldog calorie requirement, adult-weight range, growth chart or daily cup quantity. That means a number from a Catahoula Leopard Dog page, an owner’s anecdote or a chart for a different breed is not an established prescription for your dog.

Even dogs of the same type can need different amounts. Age and life stage, current weight, activity, body condition, lean mass, environment, reproductive status and the energy density of the chosen food all affect the amount an individual needs. Those factors also change over time: a growing puppy, an active adult and a dog whose activity has dropped should not automatically stay on the same ration.

AAFCO’s consumer page, Selecting the Right Pet Food, explains that feeding directions for a complete-and-balanced food must specify an amount for the animal’s life stage, usually in cups or cans, per animal weight and unit of time. The directions are a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every dog eating that amount will maintain the right weight. AAFCO notes that activity and condition may call for adjustments.

How to set a starting daily ration
- Identify the life stage. Decide whether your dog is a puppy, adult or in another life stage that affects feeding, and select a food labeled complete and balanced for that stage. For a puppy expected to become large, check that the food’s growth statement and suitability cover the expected adult size. Ask your veterinarian if the label or the puppy’s likely adult size is unclear.
- Use the guide on the food you actually feed. Find the feeding directions for the relevant life stage and your dog’s current weight. Follow that product’s units and instructions. Do not transfer a cup quantity from another food: the calories in a cup are not necessarily the same from one product to another.
- Treat the label amount as a starting point. It is the first ration to assess against your individual dog’s response, not a fixed amount to follow regardless of weight change or body condition.
- Measure and record what goes into the bowl. Use a consistent measuring method and keep the daily amount steady enough to judge its effect. Include meals, training rewards, chews and other food in the daily intake rather than treating extras as separate from the ration.
- Review the trend. Track your dog’s weight and body condition as it grows or its routine changes. If weight rises or falls unexpectedly, or your dog appears too lean or heavy, review the amount with your veterinarian rather than relying on a breed chart that does not apply.
- Reassess when something changes. A food change, a change in activity or a transition to a new life stage can alter the appropriate ration. Recheck the new food’s directions and ask your veterinarian to revise a calorie target when needed.
Choose food for life stage and suitability, not a breed name alone
Begin with the nutritional adequacy statement and intended life stage on the package. Then compare the product’s own feeding guide and calories per cup or other stated unit. For a growing puppy, confirm that the food is appropriate for growth and the expected adult size; for a dog with a health concern, use the veterinarian’s advice to guide the choice.
There is no supported basis here for naming one best food brand for Catahoula Bulldogs. A label aimed at a particular breed is not automatically a better match than a food selected for the dog’s life stage and nutritional needs. What matters for portioning is that the food’s directions and energy information belong to the product in the bowl.

A Royal Canin Bulldog puppy feeding guide illustrates why a chart should not be copied across dogs: it gives portions by puppy age and target adult weight for that particular product, and notes that requirements can vary with temperament, activity and environment. It is a product-specific Bulldog puppy guide, not a Catahoula Bulldog feeding chart.

Meals, puppies and treats
Set a repeatable schedule
Divide the measured daily ration into a consistent schedule that fits the dog’s age and needs. PetMD describes two meals a day as typical for adult Catahoula Leopard Dogs, while puppies may need more frequent scheduled meals, up to four. This is related-breed guidance, not a rule established for the Catahoula Bulldog crossbreed; choose a puppy’s routine with its age and individual needs in mind.

For a puppy, keep the day’s total ration in view when splitting it among meals. More meals do not mean a larger total daily allowance by themselves. If you use food for training, take it into account as part of the day’s food rather than quietly adding it on top of the measured meals.
Count treats as part of the daily intake
Purina’s breed page advises keeping treats to no more than 10% of daily calories. That is general guidance, not a result from a Catahoula Bulldog study. The practical point is that treats contribute energy: include them in the day’s intake and use the food label and veterinary advice to keep the whole ration appropriate. If training requires frequent rewards, small pieces or part of the measured daily food can help avoid losing track of how much the dog has eaten.

What calorie estimates can—and cannot—tell you
The Merck Veterinary Manual provides generic daily maintenance energy estimates using multiples of resting energy requirement (RER). These are veterinary reference estimates for groups of dogs, not Catahoula Bulldog prescriptions. Merck says a calculated intake is only a starting point and may need adjustment according to the individual animal’s response.

|---|---|
| Healthy adult, intact | 1.8 × RER |
| Healthy adult, neutered | 1.6 × RER |
| Adult prone to obesity | 1.4 × RER |
| Healthy puppy younger than four months | 3 × RER |
| Healthy puppy older than four months | 2 × RER |
RER is a calculated reference for resting energy needs; it is not the same thing as a dog’s guaranteed daily food requirement. Activity, life stage, lean body mass, age and environment can affect energy needs. The multipliers help explain why a calorie estimate depends on the type of dog being considered, but they do not resolve an individual puppy’s or adult’s target.

Do not turn a generic calorie estimate directly into cups without the energy information for the specific food. Even when a calorie target has been set, the food’s calories per cup or unit determine the corresponding portion. If you want to use a calorie calculation for weight management or growth, have your veterinarian calculate or confirm the target and interpret the dog’s response.
How to tell whether the amount needs review
Use the dog’s weight trend and body condition together rather than relying on appetite alone. A dog may readily eat more than it needs, and a single weigh-in does not show the whole pattern. Keep a record of weight, food amounts, treats and notable activity changes so you and your veterinarian can assess what is happening.
Veterinary nutritional assessment can include body condition scoring and muscle condition scoring. These are useful because weight alone does not describe body composition or tell you whether the dog is carrying appropriate muscle. A household or pet scale can help track weight trends, but it cannot determine ideal body condition or replace veterinary assessment.
- If weight is trending upward or downward unexpectedly, review the measured daily ration and all extras with your veterinarian.
- If your dog looks too lean or heavy, ask for a body-condition assessment rather than making a large change based only on appearance or a borrowed chart.
- If your puppy is growing and you are unsure whether the food or quantity fits its expected adult size, ask your veterinarian to review the growth plan.
- If food, activity or life stage changes, reassess rather than assuming the old cup amount still applies.
Common portioning mistakes to avoid
- Copying a different breed’s chart: Catahoula Leopard Dog guidance is not a Catahoula Bulldog prescription, and the Bulldog puppy chart described above applies to its specific product.
- Assuming one cup always means the same calories: energy density varies among foods, so use the directions and calorie information for the actual product.
- Ignoring extras: treats, training rewards and other food contribute to intake even if they do not go in the meal bowl.
- Keeping a ration unchanged after the dog changes: growth, activity and life stage can alter what is appropriate.
- Treating an equation as an exact answer: generic calorie estimates are starting points to assess against the dog’s response, not a substitute for an individual plan.
When to involve your veterinarian
Ask your veterinarian for an individual feeding plan if your Catahoula Bulldog is a growing puppy and its expected adult size or food suitability is uncertain, if weight is changing unexpectedly, or if you need a calorie target for weight management. Bring the food package or its calorie information and a realistic account of meals, treats and activity. That gives the veterinarian the details needed to turn a general starting point into guidance for this dog.
The practical answer is therefore a process rather than a breed-wide number: choose a complete-and-balanced food for the right life stage, begin with that food’s own directions, measure the daily ration, account for treats, and assess weight and body condition over time. The label supplies the starting point; your dog’s response and veterinary advice determine whether it is right.
