Young crayfish can molt six to 14 times in their first year; older crayfish typically molt about one to three times a year. Those are broad guide figures, not a fixed schedule: species, size, sex and seasonal conditions all affect how often an individual molts.
How often crayfish molt at different ages
Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension gives a broad rule of thumb: rapidly growing young crayfish molt six to 14 times during their first year. As they get older, they generally molt less often—about one to three times a year. The guidance does not give a publication year on the page reviewed, and the range is not a guarantee for every species or pet crayfish. Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension

Crayfish do not follow one calendar throughout the year. The same Extension guide says growth and molting slow or stop in winter, so a long gap during colder months can fit the general pattern.
Why molt frequency varies
Age and size
Crayfish grow by shedding their hard exoskeleton, which limits further growth. Because young crayfish are growing quickly, they tend to molt more often than older animals. Frequency usually declines as they become larger and mature.

- For Overall Development --- Are your shrimps losing color? Do they not look as vibrant as before? Here is your solution - SunGrow Rocks. Our rocks provide the perfect balance for vitality, color and growth, especially for baby shrimps in growing age. They are rich in Calcium that helps shrimp with building stronger shells, and full of Magnesium that is essential for all crustaceans to maintain vibrancy. This product can only be harvested and not made.
- Calcium Helps Shedding --- Shrimps add vibrancy to your aquatic life and make great pets for both adults and kids alike. And these white rocks that facilitate shrimp’s longevity. Japanese shrimp breeders have a firm belief in stones and they use them in their breeding facilities. You too can beautify your aquarium with these color and age enhancing rocks by SunGrow. A must-have for shrimps, especially Crystal red shrimps, Amano shrimps and Ghost shrimps.
- Clearer Water --- The stones from SunGrow act as an ion exchanger that clears water in the Aquarium. They enrich water with necessary minerals that enable shrimps to live longer. It even stores substances like heavy metals and ammonium for a longer duration.
- Aquarium Decor --- The applications of these Rocks don’t just stop here! You can even make use of them in home furnishing by placing them in all the corners of a square or rectangular mirror. Else, place these on the center table of your living room in a bowl filled with water along with a few coloured pebbles, marimos and other plants.
- Value Pack --- Every pack contains a few pieces of rocks (0.5 inch on an average) surrounded by the rock powder. One pack is enough for a 14 gallon tank and lasts 3 months. So it's not at all heavy on your pocket. They are small and take very little space. So they are great for your nano tanks too!
A 1997 study of Sydney-region Euastacus spinifer illustrates the size effect in one species: small individuals with carapaces 20–35 mm long usually molted three times a year; medium individuals measuring 35–55 mm typically molted twice; and large specimens over 55 mm molted once. These observations apply to that species and study, not crayfish generally. The study record identifies water temperature as the prime environmental regulator and says molting activity usually occurred only when water exceeded 14–15°C. Turvey and Merrick, 1997
Species and sex
Different species can have different patterns, and adult males and females may differ within a species. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that rusty crayfish juveniles complete about eight to ten molt cycles before reaching maturity the following year. After maturity, rusty crayfish males typically molt twice a year and females once. Those figures describe rusty crayfish, not all crayfish. U.S. Geological Survey

What happens during and after a molt
A new, soft shell forms beneath the old exoskeleton. The old shell splits between the carapace and abdomen, allowing the crayfish to emerge. Its replacement shell is usually soft for two to four days, according to Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension.

Hiding after a molt is expected: a soft-shelled crayfish is more vulnerable to predators and water pollution. University of Kentucky guidance also describes crayfish seeking refuge while vulnerable during molting. University of Kentucky Entomology

If you keep a crayfish
Provide a place where it can take refuge, especially around molting. Queensland government guidance for farmed redclaw says post-molt animals are vulnerable to predation and that providing shelter increases survival potential. That guidance concerns aquaculture ponds; it does not establish that a particular aquarium cave or product improves outcomes for every pet crayfish. Queensland Government redclaw guidance
Do not try to trigger extra molts by heating a tank or adding a supplement: the cited sources do not establish either as a general-purpose intervention. A slower or faster schedule than the broad guide alone does not identify a problem, because species, size, sex and seasonal conditions matter.
