Pesto’s biological and foster parents
Pesto’s biological parents are Blake and Matilda. His egg or chick was transferred to Tango and Hudson, who became his foster parents and raised him. SEA LIFE says the transfer was made because rearing a chick could place considerable strain on the older biological father, Blake.
Why was Pesto so large?
SEA LIFE attributes Pesto’s size to family traits and the care he received from his foster parents. The aquarium identifies Blake as its biggest and oldest penguin. King penguin chicks also naturally gain substantial weight before fledging; according to the aquarium, they rapidly gain weight from hatching until around 10–12 months, then begin to fledge and slim down.

The aquarium gives a typical peak-weight range of 18–25 kilograms for individual king penguin chicks. Pesto’s reported peak of 23.5 kilograms is near the upper end of that range. This is aquarium-provided context, not evidence that every chick follows the same growth pattern.
National Geographic reported expert explanations for differences between captive and wild chicks: wild chicks experience a feast-and-famine cycle linked to the austral winter fast, while continuous food availability in captivity can make fledging quicker. Australian Antarctic Program penguin expert Barbara Wienecke also explained that greater body fat can make diving harder for buoyant penguins. These are general biological explanations, not a veterinary diagnosis of Pesto.
How much did Pesto weigh?
The “50-pound penguin” description refers to Pesto at about nine months old in September 2024. Different figures reflect different dates and sources; the aquarium’s current page reports his peak weight separately.

These figures describe a growing chick, not a permanent adult weight. The aquarium says Pesto later fledged into adult feathers and swims; the dossier does not establish a current weight.
Was Pesto the world’s largest penguin?
The supported record is narrower: SEA LIFE Melbourne calls Pesto its largest-ever chick. The available research does not establish that he was the largest penguin chick anywhere, the largest king penguin in the world, or a world-record penguin.
How could Pesto be a chick while so heavy?
“Chick” describes a developmental stage, not a weight category. King penguin chicks grow on land and put on weight before replacing their insulating brown down with adult feathers. The aquarium says fledging commonly takes three to four weeks. Once the transition is complete, the birds can swim; Pesto’s large, fluffy viral-era appearance was temporary.
Rank #3
Why was Pesto brown and fluffy?
His brown coat was juvenile down, which insulated him while he grew but was not waterproof. Adult king penguins have sleek feathers, so the contrast between Pesto and the colony’s adults made him especially striking in photos and videos.
How Pesto became a global star
SEA LIFE shared videos and photographs as Pesto grew. His distinctive size and fluffy brown coat stood out beside the adult penguins, and online sharing helped his story travel far beyond the aquarium. ABC News reported that videos were receiving millions of views and crowds gathered at the aquarium window when he appeared.

What happened as Pesto grew up?
Pesto began replacing his brown juvenile down with adult feathers in October 2024. SEA LIFE says most of the down had been replaced by mid-November; he received an identifying wing band on December 2. By his first birthday in January 2025, the aquarium said he had fully fledged and loved swimming.
