Increase the time only while your dog stays comfortable, and move outdoors after indoor practice goes well. If your dog pulls away or seems stressed, take the coat off and return to an easier step later.
Introduce the raincoat without pressure
Choose a familiar, quiet room. Set the coat down where your dog can approach it or walk away freely. Reward calm curiosity with a treat, praise, or play; do not start by trying to put it on.
Once your dog is relaxed around the coat, hold it nearby and reward voluntary sniffing or nudging. You can then bring it gently toward your dog’s body, rewarding calm acceptance. Let your dog’s response set the pace.
Build up to wearing it in short sessions
- Start with a brief try-on. Put the coat on, offer a reward, and take it off again. Keep the first wearing short.
- Repeat and gradually extend the time. Pair the coat with treats, praise, toys, or a familiar game. Add wearing time in small increments only while your dog remains comfortable.
- Practice indoors before going out. When your dog is at ease wearing the coat at home, try a quiet outdoor outing. Continue rewarding calm behavior as the surroundings become more distracting.
The American Kennel Club’s raincoat guidance notes that getting familiar with a raincoat takes time and patience. There is no established acclimation timetable for Golden Retrievers, so progress should be based on your individual dog’s behavior, not a fixed number of sessions.

Respond to signs of discomfort
If your dog pulls away or appears stressed or frustrated, gently remove the coat. At the next attempt, go back to a step your dog already accepts—for example, having the coat nearby rather than wearing it. Do not insist on the same duration when your dog is uncomfortable.
Choose a comfortable fit for your dog
Use the garment’s sizing chart and measure your dog rather than choosing by breed or weight alone. The American Kennel Club’s raincoat advice recommends measuring the neck, chest and stomach circumference, and back length; it notes that weight is not always a reliable substitute.

- Check that the coat stays in place without being overly loose.
- Make sure it does not restrict your dog’s normal movement.
- Supervise your dog while the coat is on. Clothing can snag, so do not leave a dog wearing it in a crate or unattended.
Golden Retrievers do not have a proven breed-specific raincoat training protocol or a universal coat size. Choose based on your dog’s measurements and comfort signals.
