To find animal shelters and pet adoption events near you, start with a shelter-and-rescue directory using your city, state, or ZIP code. Then check the organization’s own website and contact it to confirm the animal is still available, when and how you can visit, and what to bring. Local calendars and adoption rules vary, so verify details before you travel.
Find shelters and rescues near you
- Search for local organizations. Look up the municipal animal shelter or animal services department for your city or county, as well as nearby humane societies and nonprofit rescues.
- Use a location-based directory. Petfinder’s shelter and rescue search accepts a city, state, or ZIP code. The ASPCA also points people to this directory when looking for local organizations: ASPCA: Find a Shelter.
- Browse adoptable-animal listings, then contact the organization. A listing can help you discover animals at municipal shelters and nonprofit rescues, but it does not guarantee that an animal remains available. Confirm its status and the adoption process directly with the shelter or rescue.
- Consider rehoming as another route. The ASPCA links to Home To Home, which connects people looking to adopt with people who need to rehome a pet.
Before applying or visiting, ask whether the organization serves your area and how it handles visits, adoption applications, fostering, and volunteering. A directory link is a way to find an organization, not an endorsement or partnership.

Find local pet adoption events
Check each organization’s calendar
Once you have a shortlist, visit each shelter’s or rescue’s official website and look for “adoption events,” “mobile adoptions,” or an events calendar. If dates are not clear, check the organization’s social channels or contact it directly. Event schedules are local and change over time; one calendar should not be treated as a complete national listing.
For example, the SPCA of Texas event calendar publishes dated events and describes mobile adoptions that bring animals into the community. The organization says animals at those events are first come, first served and may not appear on its website.

Verify details before setting out
Confirm the event’s date, time, address, participating animals, rules, and whether you need an appointment or application. Recheck close to departure in case the organizer has posted a change. If the event is crowded or does not have a suitable animal, ask the shelter about regular adoption hours, appointments, foster-based adoptions, or future events; not every organization offers all of these options.

- Are there age, household, or other eligibility rules?
- What are the adoption fees, and what do they include?
- Should I check with my landlord or building about pet policies before applying?
- Is the animal still available, and what is the expected process and timing?
- How must I transport the pet home, and do I need to bring a carrier or other equipment?
A local example: ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City
The ASPCA’s New York City adoption center illustrates why it is important to check the rules for the specific location. Its published information lists daily walk-in adoption hours of noon to 5 p.m. for cats and dogs over 30 pounds; small dogs require an online application and appointment. The center requires government-issued photo ID to complete an adoption, advises adopters to consider their building’s pet policy, and requires cats and kittens to leave in a secure carrier. Compare nearby options before choosing where to go
If several shelters or events could work, compare the practical details below. Verify each item with the organization, since listings and procedures can change.

Keep event results in context
Large adoption events can place many animals, but one event’s results do not predict what a local shelter will have or what another event will achieve. The ASPCA reported that 3,609 animals were adopted at California Adopt-a-Pet Day in 2024 and 4,979 in 2025. Those totals refer to that statewide event, not shelter adoptions generally. The ASPCA’s April 7, 2026 announcement said that year’s California event was scheduled for June 6, 2026; that date has passed. See the ASPCA announcement.
