Build a doghouse around your dog’s measurements and your local weather—not a one-size-fits-all plan. Measure before cutting, raise the floor, seal and roof the structure against rain, and adapt insulation and airflow to the climate. The steps below cover a practical single-room build, with choices for a windbreak and easier cleaning.
Measure your dog and choose a layout
Measure your dog before buying materials or cutting lumber. Plans offer different sizing methods, so choose one method and make sure its floor, wall, and roof dimensions work together; do not mix cut dimensions from different plans without checking their assembly.

Use the Lowe’s doorway guidance
Lowe’s recommends a doorway 2 to 4 inches wider than the dog’s shoulder width and an opening height equal to 75% of shoulder height. Its guide also says the interior should let the dog turn around without being unnecessarily spacious in cold weather. These are that guide’s sizing recommendations, not universal dimensions. Or use the Winnipeg Humane Society floor-area formula
The Winnipeg Humane Society construction brochure proposes 36 square inches of sleeping-area floor per inch of shoulder height. Its example for a 12-inch-tall dog is 432 square inches, shown as a 16-by-27-inch floor. The brochure also says to allow 1 or 2 inches above the dog’s sitting height for the sleeping-area ceiling. These are examples from that brochure, whose publication date is not identified; treat them as a separate plan’s method rather than a current universal standard. Consider a vestibule in exposed, windy locations
A simple single-room house is easier to lay out and clean. A vestibule or short entry hall can place the doorway away from the sleeping area, helping block direct wind. The Winnipeg Humane Society brochure illustrates a Dalmatian layout with a 20-by-36-inch sleeping area, 12-by-20-inch hall, 25-inch ceiling, 10-inch-square doorways, and 36-by-72-inch roof. Those dimensions belong to its example—not a general template. A dog must be able to enter comfortably, and additional partitions can make construction and cleaning more involved. The available guidance does not establish tested performance differences between these layouts.
Choose materials and tools for one plan
Use a plan-specific shopping list. The Daily Paws and Lowe’s guides describe different designs and their material quantities and sizes should not be combined unless the cuts and assemblies are compatible. Daily Paws lists pine boards, exterior plywood, screws, roofing nails, paint, and shingles; Lowe’s lists lumber, plywood, deck screws, adhesive, silicone caulk, felt paper, shingles, and exterior finish. - ROOMY FIT FOR LARGE BREEDS: Interior measures 36" L x 30" W x 44" H with a 24" x 18" door — room for a large dog to stretch out, or two medium dogs side by side. Comfortably fits Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, and Australian Shepherds. Recommended for medium-to-large dogs up to 135 lbs; measure your dog before ordering.
- 2-IN-1 HOUSE + RAISED COT: Snap the canopy on for an enclosed shelter, or snap it off for an open elevated Textilene cot — no tools to switch. Use it indoors, on the patio, in the backyard, or packed along for camping, so one purchase covers year-round lounging.
- BREATHABLE MESH RUNS COOLER: A 190g mesh top vent moves fresh air through the canopy, and the raised 2x1 Textilene base lets air flow under your dog — avoiding the hot, sticky floor of closed plastic kennels on warm days.
- RAISED & WATER-RESISTANT FOR MILD WEATHER: The 600D PVC canopy sheds light rain and the frame lifts your dog off cold, wet ground. Best suited to mild-to-moderate climates for shade and light-weather shelter — it is a breathable fabric house, not an insulated or extreme-cold shelter.
- 15-MIN TOOL-FREE SETUP + 60-DAY SUPPORT: The steel pole frame assembles like a camping tent in about 15 minutes, and packs down for storage or travel. Backed by 60-day replacement-part coverage. Note: the fabric is not chew-proof — not recommended for aggressive chewers or teething puppies.
Daily Paws lists a saw, tape measure, square, drill and bits, utility knife, hammer, wire cutters, and paintbrush. Lowe’s also provides a plan-specific tool list. Use eye protection and follow tool and product labels. Keep tools, fasteners, adhesives, paint, and sealant out of your dog’s reach while you work.

Build the raised base, walls, and roof
- Finalize dimensions and cuts. Apply the sizing method you selected to the sleeping area and entrance, then check the plan’s wall height, roof overhang, and base dimensions against those measurements.
- Assemble a stable, raised platform. Build the base square and sturdy, then raise it above the ground to reduce contact with wet or cold surfaces. Ontario outdoor-dog guidance also describes elevation as a way to reduce flooding and floor rot. The Humane Society of the United States fact sheet reproduced in a 2004 City of Lawrence agenda packet advises raising a wooden shelter at least two inches; this is attributed advice, not a current regulation. Ontario outdoor-dog guidance; Humane Society of the United States fact sheet reproduced in a 2004 City of Lawrence agenda packet.
- Frame and sheath the walls. Assemble the wall frames to the chosen plan’s dimensions, leaving the measured doorway open. Attach exterior plywood or the plan’s specified panels. Keep the structure square and joints secure.
- Fit the roof to shed rain. Install a sloped roof and cover it with the plan’s roofing layers and shingles or other specified weather-resistant covering. A removable roof can simplify cleaning and inspection, as in the Daily Paws plan; make sure it sits securely when in place.
- Seal and finish the exterior. Seal gaps and exposed joints against water using products suitable for the build. Let finishes cure according to their labels before the dog uses the shelter.
- Inspect before use. Check the inside for protruding screw tips, roofing nails, splinters, sharp edges, or gaps that could catch a paw or collar. Confirm the roof is secure and the entry is unobstructed.
Adapt the house to heat, cold, and rain
For cold or windy weather
Insulated walls, an off-center doorway, and a flexible wind-blocking flap can reduce exposure to drafts. The Winnipeg Humane Society winter guidance recommends an insulated shelter elevated above ground, with the entrance facing away from the strongest wind. It recommends dry straw rather than blankets for its winter guidance because blankets can become wet and freeze. Keep bedding dry and replace it when damp or dirty. Winnipeg Humane Society winter shelter guidance.
That guidance also says dogs should come inside during severe weather: “During severe weather conditions, it is recommended that outdoor dogs with dog shelters still be brought inside.” A doghouse should not be treated as a substitute for bringing a dog indoors when conditions are severe.

For warm weather and damp climates
Provide shade and airflow rather than sealing the house so tightly that heat and moisture collect inside. Ontario’s outdoor-dog guidance says airflow can help prevent overheating in hot conditions and moisture accumulation and mould in cold conditions. Balance ventilation with the need to block direct wind and rain; the right openings depend on placement and local exposure.
