How do I stop my kitten from biting me when we play?
Have a suitable toy ready before your kitten gets wound up. Move a wand toy so your kitten can stalk, chase, and catch it, keeping your hands away from the kitten’s mouth and claws. If the kitten turns toward your hand or foot, stop moving that body part as a target and offer the toy instead. Ask everyone in the household to respond the same way.

Avoid wrestling with your hands, even if the kitten seems to enjoy it. That can teach the kitten that human skin is an acceptable thing to chase and bite. The goal is not to suppress play, but to give its natural predatory actions an appropriate target. VCA veterinary behaviorists describe predatory play as “an integral part of feline play behavior and early learning” (VCA: Kitten Behavior and Training – Play and Investigative Behaviors).

Is it okay to play with my kitten using my hands?
No. Keep hands and feet out of the game, including during seemingly gentle play. Use a toy to create distance between your kitten’s teeth and claws and your skin. A wand toy is useful for interactive play because the kitten can chase an object at the end of the wand rather than your fingers (International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten-care booklet).

If a kitten bites your hand, avoid turning the moment into a chase by pulling the hand around as though it were prey. Pause the movement and redirect to a toy. Consistency helps the kitten learn which targets are for play.
What toys are safe for a kitten?
Choose toys that suit how you want to play, and supervise anything with parts that could be swallowed, snagged, or wrapped around the kitten.

Do not offer objects small enough to swallow. VCA warns that swallowed small objects can cause intestinal blockage, and swallowed string or yarn can cause severe intestinal damage (VCA: Kitten Behavior and Training – Play and Investigative Behaviors). International Cat Care also warns that string or elastic on a wand toy can catch around a kitten’s neck or leg (International Cat Care). These risks are why string- and elastic-bearing toys need supervision and careful storage, not a reason to avoid every toy.
How often should I play with my kitten?
Offer regular opportunities to play and vary the toys so your kitten has suitable ways to chase, catch, bat, or kick. VCA suggests several 10-minute play sessions per day and keeping four to five toy options available at a time; treat these as practical suggestions, not a fixed prescription for every kitten (VCA: Dos and Don’ts of Kitten Toys).

Interactive chase play and puzzle toys serve different purposes: a puzzle feeder provides food-seeking enrichment, but it is not a substitute for play with a person. Rotate toys and inspect them regularly. Store wand toys with strings or elastic between sessions rather than leaving them out for unsupervised play.

Stop before your kitten becomes more agitated if you notice intense tail movement, ears going back, or enlarged pupils. These can be signs that arousal is rising; they are not, by themselves, a diagnosis. Put the toy away calmly and give your kitten a chance to settle. VCA lists these signs among possible indicators of escalating arousal during play (VCA: Play and Predatory Aggression in Cats).

Play advice does not explain every bite. If biting is persistent, escalating, or causing injury, seek individualized guidance from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than assuming it is ordinary play.
