How to Check Pet Medication Expiration Dates and Store Them Safely

Check the printed expiration date and any shorter discard-after-opening instruction. Store each medicine as its label directs, and ask your veterinarian or pharmacy when a date or storage history is uncertain.

Check the date on the medicine’s label, bottle, or carton, then look for a separate instruction about when to discard it after opening. Follow the product’s storage directions, and don’t give your pet medicine that is expired, improperly stored, or missing a date you can verify. If anything is unclear, ask the dispensing veterinarian or pharmacy before using it.

A medicine can have more than one time limit: a printed expiration date, plus a shorter period after opening or puncturing the container. Storage matters, too. The printed date assumes the product has been kept under the conditions on its label. A few careful checks can help you avoid guessing about a medicine your pet depends on.

How to check whether pet medicine is expired

Look on the medicine label and its original bottle or carton for a printed expiration date, sometimes marked “EXP.” Keep the labeled packaging with the medicine: it helps you identify the product and find its storage and handling instructions. The date may appear in different places on different products, so check the container as well as the carton rather than assuming it will be in one standard location.

  1. Find the printed date. Check the label, container, and carton; the date may not be in the same place on every product.
  2. Look for another time limit. Read the label for wording such as “discard after opening,” “use within,” or a space to record a beyond-use date. This limit may be earlier than the printed expiration date.
  3. Check the storage directions. The printed expiration date assumes the medicine was stored under the conditions stated on its label.
  4. Confirm anything you cannot verify. If the date is missing, illegible, detached from the medicine, or unclear, do not estimate from the purchase date. Ask the dispensing veterinarian or pharmacy to identify the product and its usable period.

The FDA explains in “Expiration Dates – Questions and Answers” that an expiration date is the period during which a medicine is expected to retain its strength, quality, and purity when stored according to labeled conditions. It is not a guarantee that medicine remains suitable after the date or after it has been stored incorrectly.

If you’re asking, “How do I know if my dog’s medicine is expired?”, the practical answer is to check the printed date and any shorter in-use instruction, then consider whether the medicine was stored as directed. The same checks apply to medicines for cats and other pets. Do not rely on the amount left in the container, the date you bought it, or its appearance to establish that it is still usable. FDA guidance warns against using expired medicine because expected strength, quality, or safety may no longer be assured.

Where is the expiration date on pet medicine?

Start with the original product label, then inspect the bottle or other container and the carton. Look for “EXP” or an expiration-date field. If the product came from a veterinary practice or pharmacy, its dispensing label may also carry use or discard instructions. Keep the container and carton together when possible, because information on one may help identify what is in the other.

If the date is smudged, covered, detached, or unreadable, don’t try to reconstruct it. A purchase receipt does not confirm the medicine’s expiration date or how it was stored since purchase. Contact the dispensing veterinarian or pharmacy with the container in hand. They can help identify the product and its applicable usable period. If you cannot establish those details, pause rather than giving a dose based on a guess.

Expiration date, after-opening limit, and beyond-use date: what is the difference?

What you see What it tells you What to do
Printed expiration date, sometimes marked “EXP” The labeled period of expected strength, quality, and purity under the specified storage conditions. Do not use the medicine after this date.
“Discard after opening” or “use within” instruction A shorter in-use period may apply once the container is opened or punctured. Follow the product’s specific instruction; do not substitute a general rule for it.
Beyond-use date on a compounded medicine The dispensing label or pharmacy may specify a usable period that is separate from the manufacturer’s printed date. Follow the dispensing instructions and ask the compounding pharmacy if the date or limit is unclear.

There is no single after-opening deadline for all pet medicines. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine guidance on multiple-dose injectable animal drugs describes in-use stability studies, reflecting that opening or puncturing a product can affect how long it remains suitable. FDA’s November 2020 GFI #242 addresses in-use stability for these products. Veterinary guidance also uses eye drops as an example of a product class that may have an after-opening limit; that example does not establish a deadline for other medicines.

How long is pet medicine good after opening?

Use the time limit printed on that particular product or given by the dispensing pharmacy—not a general number of days or months. Some products specify a discard-after-opening period or provide a place to record a date when first opened. For products with multiple doses, opening or puncturing may matter to in-use stability. That is why the unopened expiration date alone may not answer how long a container can be used once it is in use.

For eye drops, check the product’s own instructions or ask the pharmacy; veterinary guidance identifies eye drops as one example of a medicine type that may have a shorter after-opening limit. Don’t apply an eye-drop instruction to tablets, liquids, injectables, or other products. If you opened a product but did not write down the date when the label asks you to, tell the veterinarian or pharmacy rather than inventing a date or estimating its remaining usable period.

Compounded medicine needs particular attention to its dispensing instructions. The manufacturer’s printed date may not answer the beyond-use question for a compounded product. Follow the pharmacy label, and contact the compounding pharmacy if its date, storage directions, or instructions after opening are missing or unclear.

What to do when a date or instruction is missing

Do not decide that a medicine is usable based on when you bought it, how much remains, or whether it looks normal. Contact the dispensing veterinarian or pharmacy before giving it. Keep the container and any carton so they can identify the medicine and check the applicable instructions. If the product was compounded, contact the dispensing pharmacy about its beyond-use date rather than relying only on a manufacturer’s expiration date.

Until you have an answer, keep the medicine secured in its original labeled container and do not give a dose that depends on an unverified date or storage history. If the treatment is ongoing, contact the veterinarian promptly to ask about a replacement or next steps; do not extend the medicine’s use on your own. This is especially important when the pet depends on continuing treatment: a professional can advise how to handle the gap or arrange a replacement, rather than leaving you to decide whether an uncertain product is safe or effective.

When you call, have the medicine and packaging available. Be ready to explain what date or instruction you can read, whether the product has been opened, and how it has been stored. If there was a possible exposure to heat, cold, moisture, or sunlight, describe what happened and, if you know it, how long it lasted. These details help the veterinarian or pharmacy determine what guidance applies to that product.

How to store pet medicine safely

Use the product’s directions, not a household rule

Follow the storage instructions on that medicine’s label. Some products require refrigeration, others are intended for room-temperature storage, and some need protection from sunlight. Refrigerating every medicine is not a safe default, and a date that has not passed does not by itself establish that medicine is still suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the instructions are unclear, or the medicine may have been exposed to heat, cold, moisture, or light contrary to its label, ask the veterinarian or pharmacy before giving it. Tell them what happened and, if you know it, how long the product was exposed. Do not assume that returning it to the recommended conditions restores its suitability. The FDA’s “Medications for Your Pet … Questions for Your Vet” emphasizes that temperature and light requirements are medicine-specific, not one-size-fits-all.

When you have more than one medicine at home, compare their instructions individually instead of storing them all according to the strictest or most familiar rule. Check each product for its unopened expiration date, any shorter period after opening or puncture, temperature and light requirements, container or handling instructions, and what to do after a storage excursion. Two medicines kept in the same cabinet may still have different requirements. This comparison is a way to follow each product’s directions, not a way to rank which medicine is safer.

Keep it identifiable and out of reach

  • Store medicine in its original container with its intact, legible label.
  • Choose a secure place pets and children cannot reach. A high shelf or counter may not be secure enough for a climber or persistent chewer.
  • Keep pet and human medicines separate to reduce the risk of mix-ups.
  • Secure flavored chewables and large-animal medicines especially carefully.

A secondary lockable box can help contain original packages, but it does not replace the label’s temperature, light, or moisture requirements. FDA’s “Properly Store Medications to Keep Your Pet Safe” emphasizes preventing access and keeping medicines in their original containers. A lockable box is an optional storage aid, not a substitute for suitable conditions, and no particular box or brand is required by that guidance.

Keep medicines separate from human medicines even if their packaging looks similar or they are stored in the same household. FDA’s “Veterinary Medication Errors” recommends careful label reading and separation to reduce medication mix-ups. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine safety reviewer Linda Kim-Jung, PharmD, noted in “Medication Errors Happen to Pets, Too”: “A number of the medication errors that occur in the treatment of people are the same as those we are seeing in the treatment of animals.” A deliberate pause to identify the product and read the label can help reduce avoidable confusion.

What to do with expired, unused, or unwanted medicine

Do not give expired medicine. The FDA warns in “Don’t Be Tempted to Use Expired Medicines” that expired or improperly stored medicine may not retain its expected effectiveness and may pose risks. Contact the veterinarian about replacement or next steps, particularly if your pet relies on continuing treatment. Don’t assume a medicine can be used longer because it has been kept carefully or because the printed date has only recently passed.

  1. Check for a community take-back option. The FDA identifies medicine take-back programs as the preferred disposal route for expired, unused, or unwanted medicine.
  2. If take-back is unavailable, read the medicine’s disposal directions. Follow them and the FDA’s disposal guidance. Flushing is appropriate only for medicines included on the FDA flush list—not as a general disposal method.
  3. For household-trash disposal when appropriate, prepare it as directed. The FDA advises not to crush tablets or capsules. Mix the medicine with an unpalatable substance, seal the mixture, and place it in household trash.

Keep medicine secured until you can dispose of it properly. Do not leave it where a pet or child could find it while you are arranging disposal. If you are unsure whether a particular medicine has its own disposal instruction or appears on the FDA flush list, check the product directions and the FDA’s current disposal guidance rather than flushing it by default.

A quick check before giving a dose

  • Can you identify the medicine from its original, legible label?
  • Is the printed expiration date still valid?
  • Is there a shorter after-opening, puncture, or beyond-use instruction—and, if so, is it still within that period?
  • Has the medicine been stored as its label directs, without a known exposure that needs professional advice?

If any answer is no or uncertain, pause and contact the dispensing veterinarian or pharmacy before giving the medicine. FDA materials on medication errors note that some errors seen in animal treatment resemble those seen in human treatment, making careful label checks and separation of medicines important.

How long is pet medicine good after opening?

It depends on the product. Follow its specific discard-after-opening, use-within, or beyond-use instruction. There is no single after-opening period that applies to all pet medicines.

Can I use expired medication for my pet?

No. FDA guidance warns that expired medicine may not retain expected strength, quality, or safety. Ask your veterinarian or dispensing pharmacy about replacement or what to do next, especially if treatment is ongoing.

Can I use medicine that was left out of the refrigerator or exposed to heat?

Do not assume it is still suitable or that putting it back under the recommended conditions restores it. Check the product’s storage directions and contact the veterinarian or pharmacy with details about the exposure before giving it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I dispose of expired pet medicine?

A community medicine take-back program is the preferred option. Otherwise, follow the product’s disposal directions and FDA guidance. Flush only medicines on the FDA flush list. For household trash when appropriate, FDA advises not to crush tablets or capsules; mix them with an unpalatable substance, seal the mixture, and put it in the trash.

The Bottom Line

Check both the printed expiration date and any shorter in-use limit, then make sure the medicine was stored according to its own label. Don’t guess when a date, opening history, or storage condition is uncertain: keep the product secured and ask the dispensing veterinarian or pharmacy. Don’t use expired medicine, and use a take-back program for disposal when available.
