How to Choose a Cat That Fits Your Home

A good cat match starts with your household’s time, space and care capacity—and the individual cat’s observed temperament, health and needs.

Choose a cat by matching the individual animal’s temperament, activity, health and care needs to the time, space and resources your household can provide. Age and appearance can help frame your questions, but neither breed, sex nor a brief shelter encounter can guarantee how a cat will behave at home.

Start with your household, not a listing

Before browsing, consider who lives in your home, how busy or quiet it is, the space available for a settling-in area, and how much time someone can give to daily care and interactive play. Include children and any resident animals, as well as the grooming, veterinary care and ongoing expenses your household can manage. The CDC recommends considering family members, other household animals and available time when choosing a cat; Cats Protection also highlights home, money and the personality you hope to live with.

Be specific about the kind of routine you can sustain. A cat that needs frequent play or medication may not suit a household with little time for either. A quieter home does not automatically suit every calm-looking cat: ask about the individual animal’s habits and needs.

Should you get a cat or a kitten?

Kittens

Kittens need more supervision, patience and attention than most adults. They need opportunities for play, a safe home environment and time to learn household routines. Their adult character is still developing, so a kitten’s behavior now cannot tell you exactly what it will be like as a grown cat.

Adult cats

An adult cat’s habits and preferences are usually easier for caregivers to describe, and adults are generally calmer and less demanding than kittens. That is a broad pattern, not a promise: ask about the particular cat’s energy, sociability and daily care.

Senior cats

A senior cat may suit a quieter household, but age alone does not determine a good match. Ask about health, mobility, medication and other care needs. Cats Protection describes cats aged seven and over as often suited to quieter homes; treat this as general guidance, not a rule for every cat.

What should you ask shelter or foster staff?

Ask about what caregivers have actually observed, and how much opportunity they have had to observe it. A shelter visit is only a snapshot: a shy cat may become more confident after settling into a stable home, and behavior around one person or animal may not predict behavior in another setting. The SF SPCA cautions that shelter behavior may not fully predict how a cat acts at home.

  • What are this cat’s activity level, sociability and comfort with people like?
  • What have you observed around children, other cats and dogs? How reliable or extensive is that information?
  • What daily care, grooming, diet, medication or veterinary follow-up is known to be needed?
  • What situations seem stressful for this cat, and what has helped it settle?
  • Is the cat bonded to another animal, or does it appear to prefer living alone?
  • What supplies or transition arrangements would you recommend for this individual?

If possible, meet the cat before deciding. Give it a chance to approach or respond at its own pace rather than treating one brief interaction as a complete personality assessment. Cats Protection also recommends meeting a cat before committing.

Should you get a moggy or a pedigree cat?

Make the decision around the individual cat’s needs and the information available about its history, not the label. A breed does not guarantee personality. If you are considering a pedigree cat, research breed-associated health and welfare concerns, ask what screening has been done, and consider whether you can support any likely care needs. Merck advises focusing on personality and behavior rather than appearance.

Whether you adopt from a shelter or rescue or consider a breeder, ask about the individual animal’s health and care history. Merck notes that shelter cats are typically already spayed or neutered and vaccinated, but practices and records vary, so check what is documented for the cat you are considering.

Does coat length or sex predict personality?

Do not choose on the assumption that a long-haired or short-haired cat, or a male or female cat, will reliably have a particular temperament. Instead, ask about the individual’s behavior and the care it needs. Coat care is one practical consideration: find out whether the cat needs regular grooming and whether your household can provide it. The evidence here supports assessing individual needs, not predicting personality from coat or sex.

Should you get another cat, or can you get a cat if you have a dog?

It may be possible to add a cat to a home with other pets, but compatibility depends on the animals involved, their past experience and a careful introduction. Ask shelter or foster staff what they have observed, including how the cat responds to other cats or dogs, while recognizing that this information may be limited. Consider the resident animal’s behavior and history too.

Plan for time and space to introduce animals gradually. Do not assume they will become friends; the practical goal is a safe transition and a household arrangement that works for the animals. If staff say a cat is bonded to another animal or seems to prefer living alone, include that information in your decision.

How should you assess health and care needs?

Ask what is known about the cat’s medical and vaccination history, current diet, and any ongoing treatment or follow-up. Visible signs can suggest questions, but they cannot replace a veterinary examination. Cornell lists clear eyes, clean nostrils and ears, a healthy coat and alert behavior among signs to look for; ask a veterinarian about concerns rather than diagnosing from appearance.

The CDC recommends arranging a veterinary visit within a few days to a week after adoption. Cornell advises seeking veterinary attention as soon as possible and taking extra care around resident cats when the newcomer’s health history is unknown.

How do you prepare for the first days at home?

Set up a quiet area before the cat arrives, with food and water dishes, a litter box and a scratching option. Ask what food the cat has been eating, and consult a veterinarian about any change or special diet. Give the cat time to acclimate; there is no fixed timetable for feeling at home, and you should not expect instant affection.

  • Litter: The CDC recommends one litter box for each cat, plus one additional box. Choose a box the cat can use comfortably; Cornell notes that low sides may help kittens and older cats with arthritis.
  • Food and water: Have dishes ready and ask about the cat’s current diet before making changes.
  • Scratching: Cornell recommends having a scratching post ready as part of the basic setup.
  • Ongoing care: Plan for routine veterinary care and any known medication, grooming or dietary needs. Costs vary by location and by the individual cat, so assess your own budget rather than relying on a universal estimate.
