How to Clean Up Pet Waste Without Spreading Germs

A practical CDC-based guide to cleaning dog poop, indoor urine or feces spills and cat litter without spreading germs to hands, surfaces, children or pets.

Clean up pet waste in this order: keep people and animals away, put on suitable protection, contain and remove the waste, clean the surface, disinfect it according to the product label, dispose of the waste and protective gear safely, then wash your hands with soap and running water. Use a bag for outdoor dog poop, and take extra precautions with a cat litter box when someone is pregnant or has a weakened immune system.

Why pet-waste cleanup matters

Dogs and cats can carry germs and parasites that make people sick even when the animal looks healthy and clean. Feces may contaminate hands, floors, shoes, tools, children’s play areas and food-preparation surfaces. The safest routine is not to guess whether a particular pile is harmless: treat every accident as potentially contaminated and use a consistent containment, cleaning, disinfection and handwashing sequence.

Keep children away from yards, sidewalks, litter boxes and indoor areas that may contain dog or cat feces until the waste has been removed and the surface is safe. Young children need supervision when they wash their hands because they may rush, miss areas or touch their mouths before washing is complete.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises removing dog feces from yards and public places, using a bag and placing it in an appropriate disposal area. CDC also advises washing thoroughly with soap and running water after handling animal waste.

Use the right method for the type of waste

Situation First action Protection and containment Finish
Dog poop outdoors Keep children away and pick it up promptly. Use a dog-waste bag; avoid direct contact. Put the closed bag in an appropriate disposal area and wash your hands.
Urine or feces indoors Keep people and pets out of the area. Wear suitable protective equipment, cover the material with absorbent material and collect it in a leak-proof bag. Clean, then disinfect according to the product label; remove protection and wash your hands.
Routine cat-litter care Arrange for another household member to do it when possible if someone is pregnant or immunocompromised. If you must do it, scoop daily, wear disposable gloves and discard them before handwashing. Wash your hands immediately after removing gloves.

How to pick up dog poop outdoors

1. Prepare before approaching the waste

Carry dog waste bags whenever you walk your dog or work in a yard where the dog eliminates. A bag is the basic barrier CDC recommends for outdoor dog-feces pickup. Do not rely on the feces looking dry, old or small; appearance does not establish that it is free of germs.

Move children and other pets away from the spot. If the waste is in a public place, stand so pedestrians do not step through it while you collect it. In a yard, keep play equipment, gardening tools and food away from the contaminated area until pickup is complete.

2. Use the bag without touching the feces

  1. Open the bag fully before reaching down.
  2. Turn the bag over your hand if that technique helps you keep your skin away from the waste.
  3. Use the bagged hand to grasp the feces and lift it from the ground.
  4. Pull the bag back over the waste, keeping the outside of the bag from brushing your clothing or other surfaces.
  5. Tie or close the bag securely.

Do not leave a filled bag beside a path, in a yard or at the edge of a playground. Place it in an appropriate disposal area. Follow local waste rules if they specify where animal-waste bags belong.

3. Finish with hand hygiene

Wash your hands with soap and running water after removing the bag, even if the bag did not visibly leak. Clean the fronts and backs of your hands, between your fingers and around your nails, then rinse and dry. If soap and running water are not available, CDC says hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol can be used until you can wash properly.

How to clean an indoor urine or feces accident

Indoor spills require containment before you try to make the area look clean. CDC veterinary guidance describes a sequence for animal-waste spills in veterinary settings. A household cleanup should follow the same basic order while accounting for the surface and the disinfectant label; no single household method is established for every pathogen, material or cleaner.

1. Isolate the area

Keep children and animals out of the room. Close a door or use a barrier so a pet cannot walk through the waste and spread it to another surface. Do not allow anyone to eat, drink or handle food in the area during cleanup.

2. Put on suitable protection

Use disposable gloves and any other protective equipment appropriate for the mess and the product you will use. Protective equipment is a barrier, not a replacement for handwashing. Check the disinfectant label for ventilation, contact, rinsing and material-safety instructions before applying it.

  • Leakproof design keeps hands clean and protected
  • Includes 300 unscented plastic bags (15 bags per roll; 20 rolls), a dispenser, and a matching leash clip
  • Large 13 x 9-inch bag size for generous coverage

3. Cover and collect the visible material

Cover urine or feces with absorbent material. This helps contain liquid and limits splashing while you collect the waste. Pick up the saturated material and visible feces carefully, then place everything in a leak-proof bag. Avoid actions that aerosolize or spread the material, such as vigorous scrubbing before the bulk waste is removed.

4. Seal and remove the waste

Close the bag securely. Keep it away from children, pets, food and clean supplies while you finish the surface treatment. Dispose of it according to applicable household and local waste rules.

5. Clean the surface

Cleaning and disinfection are different steps. Cleaning physically removes dirt and germs; it does not mean that every germ has been killed. After the visible waste is gone, clean the affected surface using a method suitable for that material and the product’s instructions.

6. Disinfect according to the label

Apply a disinfectant that is labeled for the surface and follow every direction, including the required wet contact time. A surface that is wiped dry immediately may not receive the time the product requires. Do not mix bleach with ammonia or with other cleaners. Mixing products can create dangerous fumes and does not make the area safer.

7. Wait before allowing access

Keep people and pets away while the disinfectant is being used and until the label says the surface is safe for contact. Some products require rinsing or drying before an animal can return. Do not let a pet lick a treated surface.

8. Remove protection and wash your hands

Take off disposable gloves and other protective equipment in a way that avoids touching the contaminated exterior. Place disposable items with the sealed waste when appropriate. Wash your hands with soap and running water immediately after removing protection.

Cleaning is not the same as disinfecting

What cleaning does

Cleaning uses physical action, such as wiping or washing, to remove visible soil and some germs from a surface. It is the step that makes disinfection possible because disinfectants may work poorly when organic material remains.

What disinfection does

Disinfection uses chemicals to kill germs that remain on a surface. Products differ in the organisms they affect, the surfaces they can be used on, the amount needed and the time the surface must stay wet. Read the entire label rather than assuming that a familiar product is appropriate for every floor, fabric, finish or pet area.

How to use a disinfectant more safely around pets

  • Remove the animal, food bowls, toys and bedding before applying the product.
  • Use only the dilution, application method and contact time stated on the label.
  • Provide the ventilation the label requires.
  • Prevent pets from licking, walking through or rubbing against the wet product.
  • Rinse or wipe afterward only when the label directs you to do so.
  • Store the product where children and animals cannot reach it.

Do not promise yourself that a household cleanup sterilizes a surface or eliminates every pathogen. The evidence supports careful removal, cleaning, label-directed disinfection and hand hygiene, not an absolute guarantee.

Cat litter box precautions

When another person should scoop

CDC recommends that someone else clean the litter box whenever possible if a household member is pregnant or has a weakened immune system. This is a risk-reduction measure, not a statement that every litter box contains infectious material.

If you must clean the box

  1. Scoop the litter box every day.
  2. Put on disposable gloves before handling litter or feces.
  3. Place the scooped waste in a bag and close it securely.
  4. Remove the gloves and discard them before washing your hands.
  5. Wash your hands immediately with soap and running water.

Daily scooping matters because CDC explains that Toxoplasma in cat feces does not become infectious until one to five days after it is shed. Removing feces each day reduces the time it remains in the box before disposal.

Keep the litter box away from children’s play and food-preparation areas. Do not allow a child to scoop or handle used litter. If a pregnant or immunocompromised person has a specific exposure concern, contact a healthcare provider for individualized advice; this general cleaning guidance cannot assess personal medical risk.

Handwashing after pet-waste handling

Handwashing is the final control step after outdoor pickup, indoor spill cleanup, litter-box scooping or removal of gloves. Use soap and running water. Rub all hand surfaces, rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel or air dryer.

When soap and running water are temporarily unavailable, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, then wash with soap and water as soon as possible. Sanitizer is a fallback, not a reason to skip washing after you return to a sink.

  • Durable Construction: Made from 40% thicker plastic than mini leash roll bags for long-lasting use.
  • Convenient Size: Measures 8 inches wide by 13 inches long to fit most pet waste stations.
  • Large Capacity: Holds 16 ounces of waste to clean up messes efficiently.
  • Trusted Brand: From Zero Waste USA, a leader in sustainable pet waste solutions.
  • Unscented and BPA-Free: Safe for pets and the environment.

Supervise young children through the entire process. A child who touches a contaminated bag, floor or glove and then touches their face can undo the benefit of a rushed rinse.

Supplies that make cleanup safer

  • Dog waste bags: Keep them near doors, leashes and the yard so outdoor pickup is immediate. CDC’s recommendation establishes the need for a bag, not a particular material, size, strength or composting claim.
  • Disposable gloves: Use them for indoor spills and for the additional litter-box precautions advised when pregnancy or immunocompromise is involved. Gloves do not replace handwashing.
  • Absorbent material: Keep enough on hand to cover a urine or feces spill before collection.
  • Leak-proof bags: Use them for collected indoor waste and saturated absorbent material.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting products: Select products whose labels permit use on the affected surface, and keep the labels available so you can follow contact-time and pet-safety directions.
  • Hand soap and a way to dry hands: Place supplies where cleanup ends, not only where the accident begins.

Do not buy a product solely because its packaging suggests it is safer for pets or stronger against germs. The relevant evidence is whether the label permits the intended use and whether you can follow its directions without exposing people or animals.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Leaving outdoor poop for later

Problem: Waste remains where children, pets or pedestrians can contact it.

Correction: Carry bags and remove dog feces from yards and public places as soon as practical, then use an appropriate disposal area.

Cleaning around the pile but not removing it first

Problem: Scrubbing or spraying while visible feces or urine remains can spread contamination.

Correction: Isolate the area, cover the material with absorbent material, collect it into a leak-proof bag and only then clean and disinfect.

Assuming an animal’s healthy appearance proves the waste is harmless

Problem: Animals can carry harmful germs without obvious illness.

Correction: Use the same protective routine for every cleanup rather than judging risk by appearance.

A simple routine to post near the door or litter area

  1. Keep children and pets away.
  2. Put on gloves or other protection appropriate to the task.
  3. Cover indoor waste with absorbent material; use a bag for outdoor dog poop.
  4. Collect the material and seal it in the correct bag.
  5. Clean the surface.
  6. Disinfect according to the product label and required contact time.
  7. Wait until the surface is safe before reopening the area.
  8. Remove protective equipment and dispose of it appropriately.
  9. Wash your hands with soap and running water.

This routine addresses the main ways waste spreads: direct contact, transfer from contaminated surfaces, tracking by paws or shoes, and contaminated hands. For individual medical questions after an exposure, speak with a healthcare provider. For concerns about a pet’s health or a product exposure, contact a veterinarian.
