Fish oil can provide EPA and DHA, but not every cat needs a supplement, and there is no universal dose for cats. Before choosing a product, ask your veterinarian whether it fits your cat’s health needs and full diet. Then compare the label’s EPA and DHA amounts—not just its total fish-oil milligrams—and choose a format you can give and measure reliably.
Can cats have fish oil?
Fish oil is a source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Veterinarians may discuss these nutrients in particular clinical or dietary contexts, but the evidence for therapeutic omega-3 supplementation in cats is limited. A study of diets for cats with chronic kidney disease found that the diet with the highest EPA content was associated with the longest survival; a controlled osteoarthritis diet study reported improved mobility measures with a diet containing EPA and DHA plus green-lipped mussel extract. Those findings concern specific diets and conditions, not proof that an over-the-counter oil treats either disease or benefits every cat. The study-diet values—200 mg EPA per 100 kcal for the renal diet and 188 mg EPA plus DHA per 100 kcal for the osteoarthritis diet—are not general supplement instructions. Today’s Veterinary Practice explains the limits of feline omega-3 evidence and dosing assessment.

Whether to add fish oil depends on the individual cat, its existing food and other supplements, and the reason for considering it. A veterinarian can determine whether supplementation is appropriate and set or confirm a dose. Do not start it simply because a product is marketed for skin, coat, joints, or general wellness.
How to compare cat fish oil supplements
Use the label to compare the nutrients your veterinarian is considering. The total number of milligrams of “fish oil” does not tell you how much EPA and DHA the product supplies. Veterinary nutrition guidance says manufacturers should provide enough information to assess those amounts. Review the EPA and DHA labeling guidance alongside your veterinarian’s plan.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| EPA and DHA listed separately | These are the omega-3 amounts to compare; fish-oil weight alone is not a substitute. |
| Serving size and labeled dose | These show what the label counts as a serving. They do not establish the right dose for your cat. |
| Format and measurement | Liquids, capsules, chews, and fortified foods differ in how they are given. A liquid requires careful measurement. |
| Species and age suitability | Check that the current label identifies the product as appropriate for cats and for your cat’s life stage. |
| Quality documentation | Check what quality information the maker provides. A seal or quality claim does not establish clinical efficacy. |
| Fit with the full diet and care plan | Account for EPA and DHA already supplied by food and other supplements, and have a veterinarian review the combined plan. |
Which format is easiest to give?
Liquid and capsule products are common; chews and foods containing omega-3s are also options to discuss with a veterinarian. The best format for an individual cat is one the cat will accept and the caregiver can give consistently and accurately. With liquid fish oil, follow the product’s measuring directions rather than estimating a dose. A capsule may be easier for some caregivers to administer, while another cat may refuse it; format alone does not tell you the EPA and DHA content.
How much fish oil can you give a cat?
There is no universal cat dose established by the cited veterinary guidance. Ask your veterinarian to set or confirm the amount based on the cat’s needs, diet, other supplements, and the product’s EPA and DHA concentration. Do not translate a study-diet value or a product’s total fish-oil milligrams into a dose for your cat.

This lets the veterinarian consider the EPA and DHA from all sources and assess whether the proposed supplement is suitable. Veterinary nutrition guidance notes that a manufacturer should provide enough information to assess the EPA and DHA amounts.

PetMD recommends looking for the NASC seal, but a seal should not be treated as proof that a product treats disease or is right for an individual cat. Read the current label and ask what quality documentation is available. In the United States, the FDA does not review non-drug supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold; manufacturers are responsible for product safety and accurate labeling. How to give fish oil to a cat
- Ask the veterinarian first. Explain why you are considering omega-3s and provide your cat’s health and medication history.
- Review the whole diet. Include the cat’s food and any other supplements so the veterinarian can account for existing EPA and DHA.
- Compare labels. Check EPA and DHA amounts, serving size, cat and life-stage suitability, format, measurement instructions, and available quality information.
- Confirm the product and amount. Have the veterinarian confirm that the specific product and dose fit the plan; do not infer a dose from fish-oil milligrams alone.
- Give it as directed and monitor your cat. Measure liquids carefully, follow the label and veterinary instructions, and contact the veterinarian about concerning changes.
