A written log or smart monitor can reveal patterns to discuss with a veterinarian, but neither can diagnose illness. A sudden or concerning change is a reason to contact your veterinarian rather than wait for a device to confirm a trend.
What to watch in your cat’s litter-box routine
Monitoring is most useful when it helps you notice a change from your cat’s usual pattern. Record observations consistently, including anything that might help a veterinarian interpret them.

- Frequency and timing: Note changes in how often your cat visits and when visits occur.
- Waste type: Record changes in urine or stool, including what you can observe while scooping.
- Visit duration or behavior: Note unusual time in the box, repeated visits, or other behavior that differs from your cat’s norm.
- Weight: If you can measure it reliably, include weight trends alongside litter-box observations.
These signals can have more than one cause. A pattern is useful information for a veterinarian, not proof of a particular condition.
Manual notes or an automated monitor?

For instance, Petivity says its Smart Litter Box Monitor tracks weight, visits, waste type, visit duration, and time of day through its app. The maker describes it as not intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate, or cure a condition. Its capabilities and limitations are manufacturer statements, not independent comparative test results.

What smart litter-box monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
Automated monitoring may make a home trend record easier to maintain and share with a veterinarian. A 2026 report from Nestlé Purina PetCare Global Research and Development and The Ohio State University describes retrospective analysis involving 136 cats and development and validation of machine-learning methods using load-sensor data to monitor elimination and weight, classify events, and identify cats in multi-cat settings. The announcement does not provide enough detail to report sensitivity, specificity, or independent clinical validation. The sample size alone does not establish diagnostic performance.
Purina veterinarian Dr. Avi Shaprut said the system may help owners notice changes that can be early signs of health conditions and seek veterinary care. That is not a diagnosis: changes in elimination or weight require clinical interpretation, and a monitor alert cannot identify the cause or recommend treatment.

When a monitor may misidentify or miss an event
Petivity’s support information says accuracy can be affected by several household and behavior factors. Its event records can also be relabeled in the app, which may help correct an attribution but does not establish that the monitor captured every visit.
- Two cats have similar weights: The system may have difficulty telling them apart.
- Cats use an unmonitored box: The device cannot record activity at another box.
- Visits overlap or happen together: Simultaneous entry can challenge event identification.
- A cat behaves unusually or eliminates in a pattern the system does not classify well: Events may be missing or incorrect.
- The box is incompatible: The manufacturer excludes self-cleaning and triangular boxes.
Petivity recommends one monitor per litter box for best performance and says it works with no more than five adult cats. Those are manufacturer specifications; no independent head-to-head device test is established here.

- Box and placement: The manufacturer says the monitor works with most litter boxes except self-cleaning and triangular models. It should be centered on a stable surface.
- Connectivity: Setup requires Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; the support page specifies a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.
- Phone and region: The support page lists iPhone iOS 14 or higher and Android 11 or higher. It says the app is available only in U.S. app stores, excluding Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories.
In a home with several cats, consider whether their weights differ enough for identification and whether all boxes they use can be monitored. If either condition is not met, a device’s cat-specific record may be incomplete or uncertain.

Keep routine litter-box care in place
Monitoring does not replace a clean, accessible box. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines recommend daily scooping and accessible boxes. They also recommend a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. The guidelines note that concerning elimination problems warrant timely veterinary attention.

How to make monitoring useful at a vet visit
- Establish a baseline: Note your cat’s usual routine before assuming that a particular frequency or pattern is normal for every cat.
- Record changes with dates: Write down what changed and when; include observed waste, visit timing, behavior, and weight if available.
- Check the record: For automated data, review cat attribution and correct mislabeled events where the app permits. Note whether the cat uses any unmonitored boxes.
- Share observations with your veterinarian: Bring the log or app record and describe the change. Ask the veterinarian how urgently your cat should be seen.
- Do not wait for more data if the change concerns you: A monitoring trend is not a reason to postpone veterinary advice.
