Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency. If your dog is panting heavily, drooling, weak, unsteady, vomiting, confused, having seizures, or collapsing after heat exposure, move them out of the heat, start cooling them with water, and contact an emergency veterinarian while arranging immediate transport. Do not wait to see whether cooling at home is enough: heatstroke can cause serious internal injury even if your dog seems better.
What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?
Heatstroke may cause one or several of these signs. You do not need to see every sign before seeking emergency care; an unusual combination of symptoms after heat exposure is enough to act.

- Unusually heavy panting or noisy, difficult breathing
- Excessive drooling
- Weakness, lethargy, wobbliness, or unsteadiness
- Anxiousness, restlessness, confusion, or disorientation
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Abnormally colored gums or tongue
- Seizures or collapse
These signs are described by Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center, the AVMA Pet First Aid handout (2023), and the RSPCA. Heatstroke is not always obvious at first, and waiting for a particular symptom—such as collapse—can cost valuable time.

- Stop exertion and get your dog out of the heat. Move them from a hot vehicle, building, or sunny area to shade or a cool indoor space.
- Contact an emergency veterinarian and arrange immediate transport. Call ahead if possible so the hospital knows you are coming.
- Begin active cooling while help is being arranged. Apply water to the body and use airflow if available. Follow the method recommended by the veterinary guidance you are using; the organizations differ on water temperature and immersion (see below).
- Keep cooling and airflow going on the way when practical. Do not delay leaving to find supplies or take a temperature. Cornell advises wetting the dog with cool water and using vehicle air conditioning during transport.
The 2026 RECOVER first-aid guideline recommends transporting dogs and cats showing heatstroke signs to a veterinary facility immediately after prehospital active cooling. Cooling is an immediate measure while you get veterinary care, not a substitute for it.

How the veterinary guidance differs on cooling
The shared priorities are prompt body cooling and immediate veterinary care, but the sources do not prescribe one identical method. Follow a named source’s detailed advice rather than treating one method as universal consensus.
| Source | Cooling method described | Advice on immersion |
|---|---|---|
| RECOVER, 2026 | Cool running water over the trunk, especially the thinner-haired underside, soaking through to the skin. | Its cited recommendation describes running water rather than a general immersion instruction. |
| AVMA, Pet First Aid handout, 2023 | Gently apply room-temperature wet towels around the neck, armpits, and groin; replace them every few minutes. Use a fan to blow cool air if available. | Warns against putting the pet in a tub of cool or cold water. |
| RSPCA | Pour water cooler than the dog over the body. | Allows cool-water submersion for some dogs, with cautions for unconscious, elderly, or medically vulnerable animals. |
Sources: RECOVER clinical guideline, AVMA handout, and RSPCA guidance. Because their instructions differ, do not assume that ice, cold-water immersion, or any single water temperature is universally advised or universally prohibited. Prioritize starting cooling promptly and getting to a veterinary hospital.

Should I take my dog’s temperature?
No temperature reading is needed before you act. Do not delay cooling or transport to find a rectal thermometer. Cornell lists a normal dog body-temperature range of 100.5–102.5°F and describes heatstroke at 105°F or higher. RECOVER suggests stopping active cooling around a rectal temperature of 39.7–40°C (103.5–104°F), with a different stopping condition for animals with stertor or stridor (noisy breathing). That is technical clinical guidance, not a reason to postpone veterinary care; follow the veterinarian’s instructions.
Why does a dog need a veterinarian even if cooling seems to help?
Heatstroke can damage organs and cause death. Cornell identifies possible acute kidney injury, blood-clotting problems, and shock. A dog that appears more comfortable after cooling may still have serious complications that are not apparent at home.

Any dog can develop heatstroke. Risk is higher for short-muzzled (brachycephalic) breeds, older or overweight dogs, dogs with thick or dark coats, and dogs with respiratory or cardiac disorders, according to Cornell. The AVMA’s warm-weather safety guidance also highlights overweight pets and short-nosed breeds during warm-weather exercise.
