How to Feed Crayfish in a Fish Tank

Offer a small portion of appropriate sinking food, watch whether your crayfish eats it, and promptly remove leftovers to help keep aquarium water clean.

Feed a crayfish food that sinks to the bottom, offer a small amount when it is likely to be active, and remove anything it leaves behind. Suitable foods can include sinking crayfish pellets, algae-based foods and species-appropriate animal foods; the right mix and feeding frequency depend on the crayfish and its tank.

What can you feed a crayfish?

Crayfish are opportunistic feeders, but food needs to reach them on the tank bottom. A convenient starting point is sinking crayfish pellets. To add variety, alternate protein-based and algae-based pellets; algae wafers are another optional algae-based food. Petco’s freshwater crustacean care sheet recommends bottom-reaching food, sinking pellets and variety. It does not establish that a particular brand is best or that pellets alone make a complete diet.

Other foods listed in care guidance include frozen fish, shrimp or crab, small minnows, earthworms and waterlogged oak leaves. These are examples, not a complete nutritional prescription. Check care advice for your crayfish’s particular species and life stage: the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) emphasizes that care requirements vary by species, while Virginia Cooperative Extension describes differences in feeding associated with life stage.

  • Choose food that sinks. Food that stays near the surface may not reach a bottom-feeding crayfish.
  • Offer variety thoughtfully. Alternate suitable plant- or algae-based and animal-protein foods rather than assuming one food type suits every species.
  • Match the food to the animal. If you are unsure whether a food is appropriate, check species-specific care guidance rather than treating a general list as a full diet plan.

When and how much should you feed it?

Evening is a practical time to offer food because crayfish often feed at night. Petco’s care sheet specifically suggests dropping sinking pellets at night, and Carolina Biological notes nocturnal behavior in its crayfish care guide. This is a useful opportunity to observe feeding, not a universal schedule.

Start with a small portion and see whether the crayfish eats it. There is no supported universal pellet count or daily frequency: need varies with species and life stage, the food offered, water temperature and other conditions. The University of Florida IFAS discusses feeding variables in recirculating aquaculture systems; that production-system guidance should not be converted into a household ration.

  1. Offer a small amount of suitable sinking food, ideally in the evening.
  2. Check whether the crayfish can reach it and whether it is eating.
  3. Adjust future portions to what is actually eaten, rather than adding more food by default.

How do you keep uneaten food from fouling the tank?

Remove leftovers promptly. Food left in the aquarium breaks down and contributes waste to the water. OATA warns: “Take care not to overfeed as this can lead to a build-up of uneaten food which breaks down releasing toxic waste into the water.” Carolina Biological’s care sheet advises removing uneaten food after a few minutes.

What if the crayfish does not eat?

First check whether feeding time may be the issue: a crayfish that is more active at night may be less likely to take food at another time. Confirm that the food sinks and can be reached. If it still does not eat, these care sources do not provide a veterinary diagnosis; consider whether it is otherwise behaving normally and consult species-specific care guidance or a qualified aquatic-animal professional if you are concerned.
