Which Fish Can Live with Bettas? Compatible Tank Mates and Tank Requirements

Selected corydoras, tetras, and rasboras may live with a betta, but compatibility depends on temperament, adult space, group needs, and matching water conditions.

Some peaceful corydoras, tetras, and rasboras may live with a betta, but there is no guaranteed match. The right choice depends on the individual betta, the companion species’ adult size and group needs, compatible water conditions, and enough space and filtration for the whole aquarium. If those needs cannot be met—or the betta shows persistent aggression—keeping it alone is a responsible choice.

Which fish may live with a betta?

Care guides identify selected corydoras, tetras, and rasboras as possible companions. These are possibilities, not promises: the exact species and the betta’s temperament matter. Fish veterinarian Jessie Sanders cautions that “individual personalities can supersede all of our recommendations.” (Aquatic Veterinary Services)

Corydoras

Some corydoras are listed as potential companions. Before choosing one, check its adult size, water requirements, group needs, and the amount of bottom space the aquarium provides. Aqueon recommends five or more for the corydoras group it describes; confirm the needs of the exact species rather than treating that number as universal. (Aqueon; Aqueon)

Selected tetras

Some tetras may be suitable, but species differ in behavior and adult size, and some may nip fins. Sanders recommends a school of 6–12 neon tetras. Aqueon advises six or more for its described tetra candidates. These are source-specific recommendations, not a single rule for every tetra species. (Aquatic Veterinary Services; Aqueon)

Rasboras

Rasboras are another possible choice. Aqueon says rasboras prefer groups of seven or more. Check the exact species’ mature size, activity, and water needs, then account for its full group in the tank plan. (Aqueon)

How to decide whether your aquarium is suitable

Assess the whole community rather than picking a tank mate from a list. A betta’s solo housing guidance is not a community-tank stocking recommendation. The aquarium must accommodate every fish at adult size, its social group, and its behavioral needs, with adequate filtration and stable water.

Account for adult size and group needs

Do not plan around the size of juvenile fish or the number that fits in the aquarium today. Schooling fish need appropriate groups, and those groups add to the community’s total adult stocking. As one specific worked example, Aqueon says one betta about 3 inches long with eight rasboras averaging 3 inches as adults calls for an aquarium of 27 gallons or larger. That is Aqueon’s example, not a universal stocking formula. (Aqueon)

Match water conditions and equipment

Candidate species must be able to thrive in the same conditions. Sanders identifies pH, carbonate hardness (kH), general hardness (gH), and temperature as parameters to compare. PetMD recommends stable warm water for bettas, giving a range of 76–81°F, and calls for a low-flow filter, heater, thermometer, test kit, and hiding places. Its 5–10 gallon ideal habitat guidance is for a betta; it does not establish a suitable volume for a community tank. (Aquatic Veterinary Services; PetMD)

The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine advises increasing tank size and filtration when adding companions. A tank or aquarium kit with a filter and heater can provide useful equipment, but verify its actual volume and flow rate against the needs of the intended adult community; owning a kit does not make a pairing safe. (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)

Consider temperament, territory, and cover

Peaceful behavior cannot be assumed from a species name alone. Provide hiding places and room for fish to avoid one another. PetMD also recommends gentle flow and regular water testing. If a betta is known to react aggressively to other fish, a community setup may not be appropriate. (PetMD)

SunGrow 50 pcs Catappa Indian Almond Leaves – 2” Water Conditioner for Betta Fish Tank, Aquarium Leaf for Fish Breeding, Shrimp, Goldfish, Guppy & Frogs
  • Give a peaceful home to your betta --- When fish are given a homely ambiance, they tend to grow stronger. By creating ideal water conditions, we assure that they can prosper. The Indian Almond leaves are considered to have beneficial properties and increase fish appetite.
  • Have a breeding pet? Add catappa --- The tropical fishes create bubble nests using a floating leaf to anchor their bubbles. So, if your tank has a breeding tetra, guppy, platies, molly, cichlid or shrimps, just add these leaves and see them anchoring their eggs over IAL. That is a sight to behold.
  • Benefits Other Fish and Snails Too --- The tea water has many advantages for fish like tetra, discus, and goldfish. It is good for rasboras and many dwarf cichlids too. Apart from that, snail owners can benefit from the magical leaves. Giving your fish this ambience calms them down. It imparts color to them and makes their scales firmer.
  • Smaller leaves, easier portion control --- Each packet contains 50 leaves measuring around 2-inches high which is a great value for money. Smaller Catappa leaves make for easier portion control and a good way to slowly introduce your pet to a new surrounding especially for smaller fishes in smaller tanks.
  • Adds beauty to nano tanks, small bowls and jars --- The Catappa leaves from SunGrow are unprocessed so you know what goes into your tank. They look pretty in a nano tank and add aesthetic beauty to your planted tank. You may even add these in individual betta jars or bowls.

Which fish should you avoid?

Avoid aggressive fish and species likely to nip a betta’s fins. Aqueon specifically names tiger barbs as fish to avoid. PetMD also cautions against long-finned fish that a betta might spar with. These risks can run in either direction: a betta may attack a companion, or another fish may harass or injure the betta. (Aqueon; PetMD)

Can you keep more than one betta together?

Do not treat another betta as a routine tank mate. The University of Illinois source describes bettas as territorial and warns that they can injure one another. PetMD discusses female sororities only in the context of a sufficiently large aquarium with ample hiding places; that makes them a conditional, higher-risk arrangement, not a default community recommendation. (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine; PetMD)

What about snails or shrimp?

For someone considering a non-fish companion, PetMD and the University of Illinois source list options such as mystery snails and ghost shrimp. A betta may still attack or eat small companions, so provide suitable cover and watch how the animals behave together. These are also not guaranteed pairings. (PetMD; University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)

How to introduce companions and when to separate them

Only consider an introduction when the aquarium is stable, properly equipped, and sized for all adult inhabitants. Afterward, monitor the fish rather than assuming that an initially calm encounter proves long-term compatibility. Persistent chasing, fin damage, hiding, or inability to feed are reasons to separate the animals. This is a cautious husbandry response to the documented risks of individual temperament, territorial behavior, and fin injury. (Aquatic Veterinary Services; PetMD; University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)

If the tank cannot meet the companions’ adult space, group, water, and cover requirements—or if the betta does not tolerate them—keep the betta alone. Dr. Krista Keller of the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital says bettas “should not live in bowls” and ideally should have a tank of 5 gallons or larger. That is a baseline for betta housing, not a recommendation that a 5-gallon tank can support tank mates. (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
