How to Get Better Photos and Videos of a Wiggly Dog

Keep a wiggly dog sharp with better focus tracking, enough light, short bursts, and a relaxed, safe photo session—using a phone or camera you already own.

To photograph a dog in motion, keep autofocus tracking the dog, use a shutter speed fast enough to limit blur, and take a short burst while the dog is in the focus area. On a phone, tap the dog’s face or eye to focus, use any available tracking or burst feature, and shoot in bright, soft light. You don’t need a dedicated camera: steady timing, a low angle, and a relaxed dog matter more than buying gear.

Why wiggly dogs are hard to photograph

A sharp action photo depends on two things happening at once: the camera must focus on the dog, and the shutter must expose the image quickly enough to limit motion blur. Getting one right does not guarantee the other. A fast shutter can freeze a dog’s legs while leaving the eyes soft if focus missed; accurate focus can still produce blur if the dog moved during a longer exposure.

Phones and cameras make many decisions automatically, but fast, unpredictable movement can outpace those decisions. The practical response is to give the camera more help: choose a focus point or tracking mode, give it enough light, and make several frames during a brief burst. Then select the frame with the clearest eyes, best expression, and most appealing moment.

There is no single shutter speed or setting that works for every dog, distance, direction, and lighting condition. A dog trotting toward you in shade presents a different challenge from one sprinting sideways across a sunlit field. Treat suggested settings as starting points, review the results, and adjust.

Get the dog’s eyes in focus

For a portrait, the eyes are usually the most important point to keep sharp. For action, the focus system has to follow the dog as its distance from the camera changes. If your camera offers continuous autofocus, subject tracking, or animal eye detection, these can help—but none is a substitute for keeping the dog inside the area the camera is using to focus.

On a phone

Tap the dog’s face, ideally near the visible eye, before taking a portrait. If your phone offers subject tracking, focus lock, or a burst option, try it on a short, predictable movement first. Phone labels and controls vary by model, so look for the focus or shooting controls in the camera app rather than assuming a particular menu path. Keep the dog reasonably large in the frame; a tiny subject is harder to focus on and gives the camera less visual information.

Some phones automatically select a subject or adjust focus as you reframe. Watch the screen rather than assuming the eye remains selected: if focus jumps to the background, tap the face again. Avoid repeatedly zooming in digitally to make a distant dog fill the screen; it may reduce image detail, and it does not make focus tracking more reliable.

On a camera

Use continuous autofocus—often called AF-C or continuous AF—so the camera keeps adjusting focus while the dog moves. Add subject tracking or animal eye detection if available, then choose a Wide, Zone, or other area large enough to keep the dog within it. A tightly restricted focus point can be difficult to hold on a fast-moving subject; a broad area gives you more room, although the camera may choose the wrong object if the background is busy.

Fujifilm’s animal-detection guidance advises keeping the subject within a focus zone and notes that eye detection can miss. Detection may be less reliable when light is poor, the face or eye is partly hidden, the dog’s coat or facial features make the eye hard to distinguish, or movement and framing are challenging. If an eye box does not appear, keep the dog in the active area and let continuous focus work on the subject; do not wait for a perfect detection indicator while the moment passes.

For a running dog, start tracking before the most important moment. Follow the dog smoothly and keep it inside the active area. If you lose the subject, reacquire focus before shooting another burst instead of firing repeatedly at an empty or unfocused frame.

Choose a shutter speed for the movement

Motion blur is reduced by making the exposure shorter. A faster shutter speed is especially helpful when a dog runs across the frame, changes direction, shakes its head, or bounds toward the camera. More light makes fast shutter speeds easier to use. In dim conditions, a camera may need a higher ISO to keep the image bright enough; the trade-off is more visible image noise, particularly in shadows.

For active animals, Nikon Professional Services’ guidance for its Z 7 and Z 6 setup suggests a minimum shutter speed of 1/500 second, using aperture priority and Auto ISO, and warns that higher ISO can introduce noise. Sony’s ILCE-a6000 guidance recommends shutter priority, continuous shooting, AF-C, Wide or Zone focus area, and 1/500 second or faster. Its example contrasts a sharper image at 1/800 second with blur at 1/100 second; that is an illustration for that camera guidance, not a controlled test that predicts results on every camera or phone.

Fujifilm’s 2025 animal-photography support guidance gives around 1/2000 second as an example for freezing a moment. That faster setting can help with rapid movement, but it needs more light or a higher ISO than 1/500 second. These manufacturer examples are starting points, not universal prescriptions. A dog moving slowly or directly toward you may need less speed than one racing sideways; check the actual frames and adjust.

Which exposure control should you use?

  • On a phone: Use a bright location and any action, sports, or motion option your camera app provides. Most phone apps do not expose the same shutter controls as a dedicated camera, so prioritize available light, tracking, and a brief burst.
  • On a camera, for a straightforward starting point: Shutter priority lets you choose a faster shutter while the camera selects the aperture. Raise ISO or use Auto ISO if the image is too dark, keeping in mind that higher ISO can add noise.
  • On a camera, when you want the camera to manage shutter speed: Aperture priority with Auto ISO and a minimum shutter-speed setting can help maintain a chosen aperture while preventing the shutter from becoming too slow. Nikon Professional Services describes this approach for its Z 7/Z 6 setup; controls and available options differ by model.
  • In very bright light or for repeatable control: Manual exposure can be useful if you understand how shutter speed, aperture, and ISO affect brightness. If the frame is underexposed, add light, open the aperture if possible, or raise ISO rather than letting the shutter become slow enough to blur the action.

Review a few frames at full size, especially the eyes, rather than judging only the small preview. If the dog’s outline is blurred despite accurate focus, try a faster shutter or more light. If the background is sharp but the dog is not, improve tracking or keep the dog in the active focus area. If the image is too dark at a fast shutter, a brighter location or higher ISO is the practical trade-off.

Use burst shooting without losing the subject

Dogs change expression and body position quickly. Continuous or burst shooting makes it more likely that one frame will catch a clear eye, an appealing stride, or a moment when the ears and paws look just right. It does not make every frame sharp, so treat a burst as a way to increase your options—not as a replacement for focus and timing.

  1. Choose a short, safe route or movement the dog already enjoys.
  2. Frame the dog and acquire focus before the action begins.
  3. Start the burst as the dog enters the most expressive part of the movement.
  4. Keep tracking and following the dog while the camera takes the frames.
  5. Stop shooting when the dog leaves the focus area or the useful moment is over. Reacquire the dog before the next attempt.

Fujifilm’s guidance specifically recommends beginning continuous shooting once the subject is in focus. Nikon photographer Alfie Bowen also recommends burst mode and AF-C for dynamic dog shots. A helper can call or direct the dog while you concentrate on framing and tracking. On a phone, use its burst control if available; if your phone instead records a short clip, video can preserve the moment and may let you select a frame later.

Set up a shot the dog can enjoy

A comfortable dog is more likely to move naturally and stay engaged. Choose a familiar place where the dog feels safe, and make the session feel like a game rather than a demand to perform. A familiar toy or small reward can encourage a glance, a turn, or a run toward the camera, but the dog’s comfort should set the pace.

Pick a good location and light

Soft natural light is often easier to work with than harsh midday sun. Open shade can reduce strong shadows on the face, while golden-hour light may provide a warm look. For action, choose a space with enough room to move and a background that does not compete with the dog. Bright conditions also make it easier to use the fast shutter speeds needed to limit motion blur.

For an off-leash run, use a fenced, safe location unless the dog has reliable sit and recall cues. If the dog is not dependable off leash, keep it safely secured and adapt the photo idea to a shorter movement or a helper’s position. Do not create a risky setup for the sake of a picture.

Get down to the dog’s eye level

Shooting from the dog’s height makes the face and eyes more prominent and gives the viewer a closer sense of the dog’s world. It can also make a running shot feel more dynamic. AKC’s dog-photography guidance quotes professional photographer Laurie Clouthier: “Be prepared to get down and get dirty. You need to shoot at eye level for best results, which means you are often flat on the ground in whatever conditions are on location. Sand, mud, water. Embrace it!” You can get the low perspective without lying on the ground if the location is wet, uncomfortable, or unsafe; the useful principle is to lower the camera toward the dog’s level.

Use a helper, toy, or reward thoughtfully

A helper can stand beyond the camera and call the dog or offer a familiar toy, letting you concentrate on focus and timing. For a running-toward-camera shot, have the helper position the dog at a safe distance and call it toward you. Bowen’s Nikon article suggests giving the dog something to focus on just above or out of frame, then using burst mode and AF-C. Keep the cue familiar and positive. If the dog is distracted, uncertain, or uninterested, change the activity instead of escalating the pressure.

Small treats can help hold attention or reward a short pause, but they are not a reason to make a dog remain still when it wants to move away. Give the dog breaks and stop if stress or fatigue appears. Watch its body language throughout, not only when you are looking through the camera.

Take a portrait, a running shot, or a short video

For a relaxed portrait

  1. Choose a familiar spot with soft light, such as open shade.
  2. Lower the camera toward the dog’s eye level and simplify the background.
  3. Focus on the eye closest to the camera where possible.
  4. Use a toy, voice, or reward to invite a natural glance without forcing a pose.
  5. Take a few frames, then pause and let the dog move or relax.

A blurred background depends on the camera, lens, distance, and framing. Do not expect every phone to reproduce the look of a camera lens; a clean background and good light can still make a phone portrait stronger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a dog running toward you

  1. Choose a safe, clear route; use a fence for off-leash running unless the dog has reliable sit and recall.
  2. Ask a helper to position the dog and call it toward you, if needed.
  3. Get low, frame the route, and begin tracking before the dog reaches the point where you want the picture.
  4. Use continuous autofocus or phone tracking and a short burst as the dog approaches.
  5. Review the eyes and motion. If the dog is blurred, try more light or a faster shutter if your device allows it; if focus is behind the dog, improve tracking or reacquire earlier.

Focus, expression, and stride vary from frame to frame, so a burst improves your chances but cannot guarantee a perfect result. Keep the first attempts short and make the route easy for the dog.

For video and still frames

Short video is useful for capturing behavior between posed moments: a head tilt, a play bow, or an expressive look. Keep the clip brief, follow the dog smoothly, and avoid moving the phone or camera so abruptly that the subject disappears from view. You can review the clip for a frame that catches the expression you want.

A frame extracted from video may not have the same detail as a full-resolution photograph, and the result depends on the recording device and settings. Use video when the movement or sequence matters more than maximum still-image detail; use a photo burst when you want individual high-resolution frames.

When a camera or lens helps—and when it does not

Good technique works with the phone or camera you already have. A dedicated camera can offer more direct control over shutter speed, continuous autofocus, burst rate, and lens choice, but it does not remove the need to keep the dog in the focus area or choose a safe, well-lit setup. If you are considering equipment, first identify the limitation you are actually encountering: slow shutter in low light, difficulty keeping a distant dog large in the frame, or focus that will not track reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A telephoto zoom can help frame a dog from farther away and may suit a portrait or action setup, but compatibility depends on the camera’s mount. AKC discusses a zoom lens around 200 mm for one portrait approach, not as a requirement for every owner or every camera. Fujifilm’s animal-photography guidance also discusses telephoto lenses and zoom handling for subject detection. Neither example means a phone owner needs a lens: choosing a closer, safe position and improving light may be enough.

Quick troubleshooting

  • The dog is blurred, but the background is sharp: The focus may have missed the dog. Start tracking earlier, keep the dog inside the active area, and try a broader Zone or Wide area if available.
  • The dog is in focus but motion looks smeared: Use more light, select a faster shutter if the device allows it, or try a less rapid movement. Raising ISO can help maintain brightness but may add noise.
  • Animal eye detection keeps disappearing: Keep the dog in the focus zone and continue tracking. Detection can miss under difficult lighting, with partial occlusion, some face or coat characteristics, or rapid movement.
  • The phone keeps focusing on the background: Tap the face again, use tracking or focus lock if offered, and make the dog larger in the frame.
  • The burst contains many near-identical frames: Use shorter bursts at the key moment, then pause to reacquire focus and let the dog reset.
  • The photo is dark at a fast shutter: Move to brighter light or raise ISO if available. Do not automatically slow the shutter if the dog is still moving quickly.
  • The dog looks tense or tires quickly: Stop, offer a break, and resume only if the dog is comfortable. A photograph is not worth extending a stressful session.
