Identify the snake before choosing a care sheet—and secure an appropriate food supply before bringing it home.
What is an egg-eating snake, and is it a suitable pet?
“African egg-eating snake” is a common name for snakes in the genus Dasypeltis; it does not identify a single species. Species can differ in range, adult size, pattern, and environmental preferences. A general care guide can help you understand the animal’s needs, but it cannot replace identifying the exact snake and its origin.

The defining practical challenge is its specialized diet. These snakes eat bird eggs, and the egg must be small enough for the snake to swallow whole. A tiny juvenile may need eggs smaller than ordinary Coturnix quail eggs, which can make feeding more difficult than finding standard reptile food. Before acquiring a snake, establish that the appropriate eggs are actually available to you on a dependable basis.
This is not a good choice if you expect to substitute a routine mouse diet, rely on grocery-store eggs, or work out the food supply after purchase. Merck Veterinary Manual, in material reviewed in September 2025, describes specialized egg-feeding as an exception to the whole-prey diets typical of most snakes; do not assume an egg eater will switch to rodents.

Suitability depends on more than enthusiasm for an unusual pet. You need to be prepared to identify the animal accurately, measure and maintain its enclosure conditions, keep track of feeding and condition, and have access to an exotic veterinarian experienced with reptiles. If any of those pieces is uncertain, pause the purchase until you can resolve the uncertainty. In particular, a promise that “eggs are easy to find” is not enough: confirm the size and type this snake already eats and whether you can obtain them regularly in your area.
What does an egg-eating snake eat?
Egg-eating snakes are fed whole bird eggs sized for the individual animal. A care guide from Big Apple Herp lists finch, canary, button quail, Coturnix quail, and other bird eggs as possibilities depending on the snake’s size. These are practical examples, not a menu that will work for every species or animal.
Ordinary chicken eggs are too large for most African egg-eating snakes, according to that guide. Very small juveniles may need eggs smaller than ordinary Coturnix quail eggs, such as very small finch eggs. Do not buy a snake on the assumption that any bird egg will do: ask what exact type and size it already eats, then confirm you can obtain a suitable supply.
Food size is a practical constraint, not a detail to work out after the snake arrives. The right question is not merely whether a seller or breeder has fed eggs, but which eggs the individual accepted. A supply that works for an adult may not work for a tiny juvenile, and an egg available in a shop is not necessarily an appropriate size. Verify that the egg can be swallowed whole and that the source can reliably supply the needed size.
How often should it be fed?
Big Apple Herp describes suitable eggs being offered roughly weekly to actively feeding, growing animals, while adults may be fed less often. That is a care-guide example, not a universal schedule. Age, season, egg size, weight, and body condition affect feeding decisions. Record meals and monitor body condition rather than applying one interval to every Dasypeltis.
Merck advises that snakes should be force-fed only if necessary. If your snake refuses food, its appetite changes, or it loses weight, monitor and document the situation and seek advice from a veterinarian experienced with reptiles. Do not respond to a missed meal by trying to force-feed it yourself.
Keep feeding notes that are specific enough to be useful: the date, egg type and size offered, whether the snake ate, and any change in weight or body condition you have observed. The notes can help distinguish an isolated refusal from a continuing pattern and make it easier to describe the situation to a veterinarian. They do not replace a veterinary assessment, and a schedule copied from a general guide should not override the needs of the identified animal.

Can a pet egg-eating snake eat chicken eggs?
For most African egg-eaters, a standard chicken egg is too large to swallow whole. Choose an egg that fits the individual snake, guided by its established feeding history and advice from a qualified source. A snake’s acceptance of a particular egg size should be confirmed before purchase; it is not safe to infer that a larger egg will work just because the animal eats eggs.
How to assess a snake before you acquire it
Make the animal’s identity, food history, and origin part of the purchase decision. CDC guidance for reptile owners recommends researching the particular animal’s care, asking about its diet and whether it has been eating, choosing a trusted source, and not keeping wild-caught reptiles as pets.
- Confirm its identity and origin. Ask for the scientific name, not just “egg-eater” or “African egg-eating snake,” and ask where the animal originated. Use those details to find care recommendations that fit that species and locality.
- Ask for specific feeding records. Find out what kind of egg and what size the snake has eaten, when it last ate, and whether its feeding has been consistent. “It eats eggs” is not enough information if you cannot obtain eggs of the size it accepts.
- Establish captive-bred or field-collected status. CDC advises against keeping wild-caught reptiles as pets. Ask the seller directly and do not treat an unclear answer as confirmation that the animal was captive bred.
- Secure the ongoing food supply. Identify a dependable source of eggs at the needed size before acquiring the animal. The available care information does not establish a geographically reliable supplier, so availability needs to be checked where you live.
- Locate veterinary care in advance. Find an exotic veterinarian experienced with reptiles and ask whether they can see this kind of snake. CDC recommends regular checkups with an exotic veterinarian experienced in reptile care.
- Check current legal requirements. Rules may depend on species, origin, and location. Herpeton Academy reported on September 2, 2026, that it found no CITES, EU Wildlife Trade Annex, or Bern Convention listing for D. scabra in the official sources it checked. That finding does not establish that import, animal-health, veterinary, or national ownership requirements do not apply, or determine the status of another species. Check the rules that apply to the particular animal where you live before purchase.
These details are useful for comparing individual animals rather than choosing on appearance or availability alone. Compare the exact species and origin, documented feeding success and accepted egg size, age and body condition, and the fit between the snake’s environmental needs and the conditions you can measure in its enclosure. Also consider whether an experienced reptile veterinarian is accessible to you. A seller’s answers that leave the identity, feeding history, or origin unclear are a reason to delay—not to guess.
Questions to ask the seller
- What is the snake’s scientific name, and what is known about its origin?
- Is it captive bred or field collected?
- What exact type and size of egg has it eaten successfully?
- When did it last eat, and has it been eating consistently?
- What is its age and current body condition, and are there feeding or weight records?
These are not formal guarantees of health, but they give you concrete information to compare against your own food supply and care plan. If the snake has a recent feeding history, make sure it is a history you can continue rather than assuming it will adapt to a different egg size or type.
What enclosure does an egg-eating snake need?
Start with a secure enclosure and furnish it with appropriate cover, hides, fresh water, and climbing structure. Many adults may use an enclosure around 36 inches long or larger, depending on body size, according to Big Apple Herp; this is a starting example, not a universal minimum. The guide also emphasizes useful height and climbing structure. Choose dimensions and furnishing for the identified animal rather than treating one enclosure size as suitable for every species and age.
Individual housing is recommended by the species guide as a way to make feeding and health monitoring easier. When an animal is housed alone, it is clearer which snake ate, how much it weighed, and whether its behavior or condition has changed.
Think of the enclosure as a set of conditions to verify rather than a shopping list of dimensions. Length alone does not tell you whether the snake has useful vertical space or climbing structure, and a nominal enclosure size does not establish that its thermal and humidity conditions suit the species. Before bringing the snake home, make sure the enclosure is secure and that you can observe and measure the areas the snake uses. Keepers should be able to offer appropriate cover and a choice of conditions, not just a single exposed basking spot.

Set up and measure a thermal gradient
Do not copy a temperature from a care sheet without checking the species it covers. For Dasypeltis scabra, Herpeton Academy gives the following care-sheet ranges and advises use of a thermostat plus measurements of both air and perch temperatures. These figures are specific to that guide’s recommendations for D. scabra, not a settled prescription for every egg-eating snake.
| Measurement for D. scabra | Herpeton Academy range |
|---|---|
| Basking surface | 30–32°C |
| Ambient air | 24–28°C |
| Cool retreat | 22–24°C |
| Nighttime conditions | 20–23°C |
Big Apple Herp gives a different practical temperature range for commonly kept animals. The difference is a reason to identify the species and confirm suitable targets with an experienced keeper or reptile veterinarian, not to average the figures into a new target. Measure the conditions the snake actually experiences, including air and the perch or basking surface, and use a thermostat to control enclosure heating.
A thermostat, thermometer, and hygrometer serve related but distinct purposes. The thermostat controls a compatible heating setup; a thermometer lets you check the temperatures the animal actually experiences; a hygrometer measures humidity. Herpeton Academy specifically advises a thermostat and measurement of air and perch temperatures for D. scabra, and the UC Davis-hosted general snake guide identifies a hygrometer as necessary for measuring humidity. These are equipment categories, not endorsements of a particular model. Choose equipment appropriate to the enclosure and heating method, and verify that its placement lets you assess the relevant conditions rather than relying on a dial or a single reading.
Manage humidity, water, and substrate
Big Apple Herp presents 40–60% ambient humidity as a general starting point for many commonly kept animals, while noting that species and locality matter. Herpeton Academy recommends offering dry and moderately humid choices for D. scabra. These recommendations do not establish one humidity target for every member of the genus. Use a hygrometer to measure conditions, and avoid assuming that constantly wet substrate or one fixed target suits every snake.
Keep fresh water available at all times and change it daily, as advised by the UC Davis-hosted general snake guide. Substrate affects humidity, and Merck Veterinary Manual warns that loose substrate can be swallowed during feeding and cause gastrointestinal blockage. Choose the substrate and feeding arrangement with that risk in mind.

Because substrate can influence humidity and loose material may be swallowed during feeding, consider how the snake will encounter the egg as well as how the enclosure looks. Avoid treating a substrate choice as purely decorative. The available guidance does not prescribe one substrate for every Dasypeltis; select a setup compatible with the individual’s environmental needs and discuss uncertainty with a reptile-experienced veterinarian.

How to manage feeding and routine care
Keep a simple record of feeding dates, egg type and size, weight, and relevant changes in behavior or condition. That record helps you see whether the snake’s intake or weight is changing and gives a reptile veterinarian useful context. Adjust care in response to the individual animal and professional advice, not an assumed schedule.
Recommendations for handling immediately after a meal differ. Merck advises not handling a snake for three days after feeding to reduce the chance of regurgitation; the UC Davis-hosted general guide says to avoid handling for 24 hours. Neither source establishes one universal post-feeding interval specifically for Dasypeltis. Ask the veterinarian familiar with your snake for guidance, and avoid unnecessary handling after feeding.

Routine care also means keeping the basic records together: feeding dates and egg sizes, observed weight and condition changes, and the measured enclosure conditions. If a snake eats less often than expected, those notes can help you describe what has changed rather than relying on memory. Do not assume that a single missed meal establishes a diagnosis or that a schedule intended for a growing animal applies to an adult. When appetite or weight is a concern, contact the veterinarian rather than changing the diet or attempting force-feeding on your own.

The care needs point to a few useful equipment categories, but not to a particular brand or model. A reptile thermostat temperature controller is relevant because Herpeton Academy recommends thermostat-controlled heating for D. scabra. A digital thermometer and hygrometer are relevant because enclosure air and perch temperatures need to be measured and humidity needs to be checked. Choose equipment that suits the actual enclosure and heating arrangement, and verify its readings in the places that matter to the snake.

Food sourcing is at least as important as equipment shopping. A dependable feeder-egg supplier, especially one able to provide very small eggs for juveniles, would address a real practical need. However, a supplier’s availability, geographic coverage, and terms have not been established here. Do not assume that a named seller can serve your area or that a product listing is suitable for your snake; verify the egg type and size and the seller’s current availability yourself.
Common planning mistakes
- Buying first and looking for eggs later: tiny juveniles can require very small eggs that are not commonly available in grocery stores. Verify a supply before acquisition.
- Relying on the common name: “African egg-eater” does not identify the species or its origin. Get the scientific name and use species-appropriate husbandry information.
- Assuming chicken eggs or rodents will solve feeding: ordinary chicken eggs are too large for most African egg-eaters, and an egg eater should not be assumed to switch to a standard mouse diet.
- Using a temperature or humidity number without context: care-sheet figures apply to particular species or guides. Measure the enclosure and confirm targets for the actual snake.
- Heating by direct contact: heat rocks and mats can burn a snake when used in direct contact. Use controlled heating and verify temperatures.
- Improvising when the snake will not eat: track the refusal or weight change and contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian rather than attempting force-feeding.
- Skipping origin, veterinary, or legal checks: ask about captive-bred status, find an experienced veterinarian, and check current local requirements for the specific animal.
- Buying based on an unspecified feeding claim: ask which egg type and size the animal has actually eaten, when it last ate, and whether the pattern has been consistent.
- Assuming a care-sheet range fits every egg-eater: the example ranges cited here include species-specific advice for D. scabra and broader starting guidance. Identify the animal before setting targets.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an egg-eating snake eat?
It eats whole bird eggs small enough to swallow. Big Apple Herp lists finch, canary, button quail, Coturnix quail, or other eggs depending on the snake’s size. Confirm the individual animal’s accepted egg type and size with its breeder or seller.
Can a pet egg-eating snake eat chicken eggs?
A standard chicken egg is too large for most African egg-eating snakes, according to Big Apple Herp. Do not assume it will work; use an egg sized for the individual and check its feeding history.

How often should I feed an egg-eating snake?
Big Apple Herp describes roughly weekly offerings for actively feeding, growing animals and less frequent feeding for adults, but this is not a universal schedule. Age, season, egg size, weight, and body condition matter. Track meals and consult a reptile-experienced veterinarian about appetite changes or weight loss.
What size enclosure does an egg-eating snake need?
Big Apple Herp gives around 36 inches long or larger as an example for many adults, depending on body size, and emphasizes useful height and climbing structure. Treat it as a starting point rather than a universal minimum; fit the secure enclosure to the identified animal and provide cover, hides, water, and climbing structure.
What temperature and humidity should I use?
Targets depend on the exact species and locality. For D. scabra, Herpeton Academy gives a 30–32°C basking surface, 24–28°C ambient air, 22–24°C cool retreat, and 20–23°C nighttime conditions. Big Apple Herp offers 40–60% ambient humidity as a general starting point for many commonly kept animals, but this is not a universal target. Use a thermostat, thermometer, and hygrometer, and confirm conditions for your snake.
Why won’t my African egg-eating snake eat?
A refusal can have more than one explanation, and the care guidance does not support diagnosing the cause from a single missed meal. Record what egg type and size was offered, the date, weight, and any change in condition, then seek advice from a veterinarian experienced with reptiles if refusal continues, appetite changes, or weight drops. Do not attempt improvised force-feeding.

Should I handle my snake after it eats?
The general guidance differs: Merck Veterinary Manual advises avoiding handling for three days after feeding to reduce regurgitation risk, while the UC Davis-hosted snake guide says 24 hours. Neither establishes a universal interval for Dasypeltis; ask the veterinarian familiar with your snake and avoid unnecessary handling after meals.
The Bottom Line
An egg-eating snake can be a responsible pet only when you know the exact species and origin, can reliably source the appropriately sized whole bird eggs it already eats, and can measure species-appropriate enclosure conditions. Before purchase, verify feeding history and captive-bred status, plan secure housing with controlled heat and measured humidity, and locate a reptile-experienced veterinarian. If any part of that plan is unresolved, wait before bringing the snake home.
