How to Help a Shelter Pet Settle In During the First Few Weeks

A calm home base, familiar routines and gradual introductions can help a shelter dog or cat adjust at their own pace during the first few weeks.

Give your new pet a quiet, secure home base, keep daily care predictable, and let them approach people and explore at their own pace. For dogs and cats, the first few weeks are a transition—not a countdown: the ASPCA’s “3-3-3 Guideline” is a rough orientation, not a guarantee that every pet will feel settled after three weeks.

Prepare a quiet home base before your pet arrives

Choose a calm area where your pet can rest without being approached constantly. Limit access to the rest of the home at first, then expand it gradually as the animal appears comfortable. Secure doors and windows, cover or remove exposed cords and hazardous chewable items, and check that household plants are safe. A pet gate can help manage access, but it does not replace supervision.

For a cat, a transition room should have a securely closable door, an accessible litter box, food and water, bedding, places to hide, and a scratching surface. Offer hiding choices at different heights if possible. A crate or carrier, bowls, a bed, litter supplies, a scratching post or pad, a hiding box and a few simple toys may also be useful; choose supplies to suit the animal and your home rather than buying a particular brand.

Make the first days calm and predictable

A newly adopted pet may be unsettled by unfamiliar sounds, smells, people and animals. Keep the environment quiet, allow plenty of uninterrupted rest, and maintain a simple rhythm for meals, toilet breaks or litter access, and suitable activity. Let the animal observe and initiate contact. Do not pull a hiding cat out, insist on affection, or require the pet to meet every household member right away.

The ASPCA describes the first three days as a period when a pet may feel nervous and overwhelmed, followed by roughly three weeks of decompressing and beginning to settle. Its “3-3-3 Guideline” is a rule of thumb, not a deadline or a prediction for an individual animal. Some pets become comfortable sooner; others need more time.

Preserve familiar food and care where appropriate

Ask the shelter or rescue for the pet’s medical records, current food, feeding routine and any care instructions. Share the records with your veterinarian. If the animal has not been examined recently, Best Friends Animal Society recommends arranging a veterinary appointment; ask the veterinarian about vaccinations, parasite testing, health concerns and diet.

Keeping the familiar food initially can reduce one avoidable change. Best Friends’ cat adoption checklist suggests beginning a gradual transition with one-quarter new food and three-quarters old food, then increasing the new food over a week. That is a source-specific suggestion, not a universal prescription: follow veterinary advice for pets with medical or dietary needs. If a cat’s litter box must move, keep it accessible and relocate it gradually.

Introduce resident pets in stages

Start with separation, using a secure room or another suitable barrier. Best Friends suggests that a seven-to-ten-day quarantine may be appropriate after travel to watch for illness, but this is not a universal medical rule. Ask the shelter and your veterinarian whether separation and for how long make sense for the animals involved.

Cat meeting cat

Allow the cats to become familiar with each other’s scent before brief visual contact. Progress only while both remain relaxed; move to supervised contact when they are ready. If either cat shows distress, return to an earlier stage and give them more time.

Dog meeting cat

Use controlled, supervised exposure and watch both animals’ body language. Keep them apart whenever no one can supervise if there is any safety concern. Getting used to each other may take days, weeks or months, and some dogs may never be safe around a particular cat.

Watch your pet and adjust the pace

Hiding can be a normal way for a cat to feel safe; provide retreat options and build trust gradually. More generally, let the animal’s comfort guide how quickly you expand access, add activity or arrange introductions. Stress and travel can coincide with illness or worsen an existing problem, so contact the shelter or a veterinarian if health or behavior concerns arise.
