Give your new shelter pet a quiet, secure place to settle, keep contact gentle and voluntary, and let the animal choose when to explore. Hiding can be part of adjusting to an unfamiliar home, but it does not rule out illness or pain. Contact a veterinarian if fear is extreme or newly developed, or if you notice changes in appetite, energy, or other signs of health trouble.

Set up one quiet, secure home base

Choose a low-traffic area where your pet can rest undisturbed, with the essentials it needs close by. The ASPCA recommends starting a dog or cat in one room with familiar toys, food and water, plus a litter box for a cat, then gradually opening more of the home as the animal seems comfortable (ASPCA transition advice).

Make sure your pet can retreat without getting trapped in a hazardous or inaccessible spot. Tailor the space to the animal and your home; the goal is a calm refuge, not a particular product or room layout.

For a cat who is hiding

Provide an accessible hiding place and let the cat use it. The Humane Society of Sonoma County advises setting up a quiet room with safe places to hide and not forcing attention. You can spend calm time nearby and allow the cat to approach when ready; a cardboard box can serve as a simple retreat (Humane Society of Sonoma County). VCA also recommends a safe retreat, such as an enclosed bed or tall cat tree, for a hiding kitten (VCA: Fears, Phobias, and Anxiety in Cats and Dogs).

Keep interaction low-pressure and voluntary

Move calmly, speak softly, and give your pet room to decide whether to come closer. Avoid reaching repeatedly into a hiding spot, crowding the animal, insisting on cuddles, or inviting a stream of visitors to meet it. Keep early contact brief. If the pet is comfortable taking food, you can reward a voluntary approach; do not use food to lure it into a situation it is trying to avoid.

Do not punish fearful behavior. Predictable routines and gradual, positive interactions can help an animal adjust, but they are general settling-in guidance, not a guaranteed timetable or treatment plan. The Humane Society of Charlotte likewise recommends routine, gradual introductions, and not forcing interactions during adjustment (Humane Society of Charlotte).

Let progress—not a deadline—guide exploration

There is no fixed schedule that predicts when an individual pet will feel at home. VCA describes hiding and avoiding food among behaviors that can occur during a cat’s initial adjustment, while explicitly cautioning that the “3-3-3” framework is not a strict timeline (VCA’s cat-adoption guidance). The Humane Society of Charlotte uses a two-week decompression framing, and the Humane Society of Sonoma County also emphasizes that cats adjust at different paces (Humane Society of Charlotte; Humane Society of Sonoma County).

Keep the safe area available as your pet begins to explore, and allow it to retreat. A slower adjustment is not disobedience, and a calendar cannot tell you whether an animal is ready for more space or contact.

Introduce resident pets gradually

Do not begin with an immediate face-to-face meeting. Start with physical separation and gradual scent exposure. When both animals appear calm, move to a controlled, leashed introduction; keep them separated whenever nobody can supervise. American Humane Society recommends returning to separation and allowing more time if either animal shows fear or aggression (American Humane Society’s introduction guidance).

Persistent fixation, lunging, snapping, constant hiding, or refusal to eat can signal that the introduction is not going well. Do not assume every pairing will be safe or successful; seek help from a qualified behavior professional if fear or unsafe behavior persists.

Know when to contact a veterinarian

A new environment can be stressful, but illness or pain can also contribute to fear. VCA advises veterinary consultation when a dog or cat’s fear is extreme or has started recently; an examination can help identify medical contributors (VCA).

Pay attention to actual eating and drinking, elimination, energy, and other changes rather than assuming they are part of adjustment. Appetite loss and listlessness may occur with stress, but medical causes are common; VCA advises contacting a veterinarian about health concerns (VCA: Testing for Decreased Appetite with Listlessness). For an acute emergency or severe symptoms, follow local veterinary advice and seek urgent care.
