You can encourage your cat to spend time on your lap, but you cannot make every cat enjoy it. The best approach is to make closeness calm, comfortable, and rewarding, then let your cat decide whether to come over, stay, or leave. Sitting beside you or choosing to be petted elsewhere can be a sign of trust too.
How to encourage your cat to sit on your lap
Use these seven ideas as a gradual, reward-based invitation—not a guaranteed training protocol. Your cat’s comfort and choice matter more than reaching a particular goal.

1. Choose a calm, predictable moment
Try when the room is quiet and your cat is already relaxed in a familiar place. Move slowly; sudden or unpredictable motions can make an interaction feel less safe. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines emphasize low-stress handling and paying attention to the individual cat.

2. Invite your cat rather than putting it on your lap
Sit comfortably and give your cat room to approach. Avoid lifting it onto your lap or holding it there. The guidelines explain that allowing a cat to choose its position and move freely supports more positive interactions: “Providing the cat with the choice to sit, stand, lie down and to move body parts during handling leads to more positive interactions when compared with restraint.”

3. Reward small, voluntary steps
If your cat approaches, sniffs you, or settles nearby, offer a small reward it enjoys. Over time, you can reward closer approaches, such as putting paws on your leg or settling on your lap. 4. Let lap visits grow at your cat’s pace
Start with brief, pleasant moments and reward your cat while it remains comfortable. Gradually give it the opportunity to stay longer, but do not extend an interaction just to meet a time target. If your cat shifts away or seems uneasy, make space rather than trying to keep the session going. AAHA recommends positive reinforcement and short, gradual training interactions.

5. Make your lap an inviting option
A familiar soft blanket on your lap may make the spot more appealing if your cat likes that texture. Keep the route on and off easy, and do not treat a blanket as a requirement or a proven way to change a cat’s preferences. Many cats prefer touch around the head and neck. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM guidelines note that touching the belly or the area near the base of the tail can prompt negative responses. Watch how your cat reacts, pause if it moves away or appears uncomfortable, and let it choose whether to continue.

7. Let your cat end the visit
If your cat gets up, let it go. That is useful information about what it wants, not disobedience. Do not restrain it or use a cue to force it to stay; AAHA’s training guidance says cues “should never be used to force compliance.” If your cat prefers sitting beside you, that can still be comfortable, trusting contact. The Humane Society of Huron Valley likewise advises respecting that some cats may not become lap cats.

Cats vary in how much they enjoy sitting or lying on a person. A cat may prefer a nearby spot, a particular resting place, or less touch; that preference does not by itself mean it distrusts you. Make interaction available without insisting on a lap, and count relaxed time beside you as a positive outcome.

If your cat’s willingness to jump, settle, or accept touch changes suddenly, or you suspect discomfort, contact your veterinarian. A new reluctance is not automatically a training problem, and these general interaction guidelines cannot determine its cause.
