Make play mentally engaging by giving your cat chances to stalk, chase, catch, search, and work for food. Move a wand toy like prey instead of dangling it just out of reach, vary the activities, and match the pace to your cat’s age and abilities. These are enrichment ideas—not a proven formula for improving cognition or preventing disease.
How can I play with my cat?
Interactive play can invite predatory behaviors. The AAFP and ISFM recommend moving a rod or wand toy to resemble prey: swoop it through the air like a flying animal, or move it swiftly away along the ground. Give your cat opportunities to catch it. Their Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines describe play and predatory behavior as part of an environment that supports feline needs.

- Move the lure away from your cat. Try quick, straight movements along the floor, then pause so your cat can watch and approach.
- Invite a stalk and pounce. Let your cat follow, chase, and leap, or sweep the lure through the air in a prey-like arc.
- Let your cat catch it. Avoid keeping the toy perpetually out of reach; catching completes the sequence of play.
The pacing above is a practical way to apply the guidelines, not a tested prescription for how long or how often to play. The AAFP’s Feline Behavior Guidelines recommend interactive toys and hunting games several times a day for solitary indoor cats; this is association guidance, not an experimentally established optimum for every cat.

Rotate toys and encourage searching
Rather than leaving every toy out all the time, rotate what is available to help prevent habituation and boredom. Hide a toy in a box or another safe spot so your cat can search for, locate, and capture it. Offer toys that can be batted, carried, or bitten, including larger soft toys.

Turn part of a meal into a foraging game
Hide small portions of food in several places, scatter some kibble, or toss individual pieces for your cat to chase. A puzzle feeder can make food acquisition more active, too. A cardboard tube, box, or egg carton can also be adapted as a simple DIY food puzzle; a store-bought feeder is not essential. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines describe these kinds of activities as ways to engage cats in acquiring food, while the AAFP’s feline feeding programs consensus statement discusses puzzle feeders and multiple small meals in relation to predatory, foraging, and play behaviors. Neither source establishes that puzzles prevent obesity or anxiety.
Include food used in games in your cat’s usual feeding plan. Ask your veterinarian for advice tailored to your cat’s nutritional needs or weight.

| Activity | What it engages | Interaction and supervision |
|---|---|---|
| Wand or rod toy | Stalking, chasing, pouncing, and catching | Interactive play; supervise, then put the toy away if it has string or parts that could be swallowed. |
| Hidden or scattered food | Searching and foraging | Can be set up for independent searching; keep food portions within the normal feeding plan. |
| Puzzle feeder or DIY box, tube, or egg carton | Working to access food | Choose a safe design suited to your cat and supervise if it has parts that could be chewed or swallowed. |
| Batting or carrying toy | Manipulating, carrying, and biting | Can be self-directed when the toy is safe for unsupervised access. |
How do I keep play safe?
- Do not make hands or feet the target. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines advise against it to prevent injury to the cat or handler.
- Put string toys and other toys with potentially ingestible parts away after play. Do not leave toys with small parts available unsupervised.
- For kittens, choose toys and puzzle feeders that are appropriately sized and safe to use.
- In a multi-cat home, use separate toy locations or play with cats individually at different times or in different places if competition is an issue.
How should I adapt play for my cat?
Kittens often have a strong play drive and use play to practice predatory actions. Older cats still need opportunities to play, but you may need to adjust the activity’s type and intensity to suit their abilities. The AAHA kitten behavior and environmental-needs guidance addresses play in kittens; it does not establish one schedule for cats of every age.
Let your cat’s response guide the activity: some will pursue an airborne lure, while others prefer a toy moving along the floor or a food-search game. If your cat’s interest in play changes suddenly, or activity seems limited by pain or illness, ask a veterinarian for advice.

What does the guidance say about mental benefits?
The professional guidelines support play, predatory behavior, and active food acquisition as parts of a cat’s environment. The AAFP/ISFM summary says, “A cat thrives when we provide a safe haven, multiple and separate food, water, toileting and scratching/resting areas, opportunities for play and predatory behavior, and positive, consistent human–cat interactions.” That is guidance about meeting environmental needs, not a measured claim that a particular toy, routine, or puzzle improves cognition or prevents illness. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines address the veterinary environment and do not supply a universal home-play duration.
