The safest way to hold a bird is the gentlest one: use as little restraint as you can, keep it brief, and never squeeze the body. Birds breathe by moving the chest and abdomen, so a tight grip can compromise breathing. The right approach also depends on which bird you mean. A tame pet that steps onto your hand is one situation. An injured wild bird, especially a raptor, is another, and the best move there is usually to limit contact and call a qualified wildlife rehabilitator.
Two situations, two different rules
| Factor | Familiar pet bird | Injured or wild bird |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Ordinary interaction, or brief restraint for care | Emergency containment and transport to professionals |
| Starting point | Observe, then approach slowly and quietly | Minimal handling; contact a wildlife rehabilitator |
| Handler risk | Low to moderate, depending on species and the bird’s mood | Higher; raptor beaks and talons can seriously injure people |
| Towel | Sometimes useful for birds accustomed to handling | Only for limited containment, as directed by a qualified person |
No single grip suits every species, and the evidence here is qualitative veterinary guidance. No injury rates or safe time limits have been established, so treat any “safe for X seconds” claim with suspicion.
Holding a familiar pet bird
Observe before you touch
Watch the bird first. Fluffed, stressed or fearful birds are better left alone. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises minimizing fear and stress. In its words (Sharman M. Hoppes, DVM, DABVP (Avian), page last updated September 2024): “Minimizing restraint time, talking to the bird in a quiet voice, and moving slowly can help reduce stress in many birds.”
Let a hand-tame bird step up
A bird that is used to being handled may step onto your hand with little or no restraint. This is the preferred way to move a tame bird because it needs the least force. Offer your hand calmly and let the bird come to you rather than grabbing.

Keep the body free to breathe
- Never squeeze the chest or abdomen. The thorax and abdomen must be free to expand with each breath; this point appears in both Merck’s guidance and archived CDC guidance (last reviewed June 20, 2014).
- Watch the bird the whole time you hold it.
- Return the bird to its cage if its breathing becomes increased or labored, or if it becomes weak (Merck).
- Keep restraint short.
Using a towel
Merck notes that birds accustomed to handling may be covered slowly and gently with a towel when restraint is needed. The Association of Avian Veterinarians’ practice tips (updated September 5, 2025) include a towel tip from Andrea Henrik, MVDr, for some parrots: “For some birds, this lowers stress and improves tolerance to handling and examination!” That is an observation about some birds, not a guarantee.
- Use a soft, clean towel and cover slowly, not with a sudden grab.
- A towel is not suitable for every bird. Obese birds can overheat in one, so keep the time short.
- A towel does not make restraint safe on its own. Breathing still needs close watching.
Clinical restraint methods vary with the bird and the purpose. If a bird needs a nail trim, medication or an exam, ask an avian veterinarian to show you the method suited to your species rather than copying a generic hold.

Picking up an injured wild bird
Do not apply pet-bird habits to wildlife. A frightened or injured wild bird may be badly stressed even when it sits still. Legal rules and recommended actions vary by species and jurisdiction, so follow local wildlife instructions.
The Association of Avian Veterinarians’ guidance, What to Do If You Find an Injured Wild Bird, says that if an injured bird must be moved, wear gloves and handle it gently with full support. Then contain it quietly and contact a wildlife rehabilitator.

- Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or avian veterinarian first and ask whether the bird needs to be moved.
- If you are told to move it, wear gloves and support the whole body gently.
- Place it in a ventilated container and keep it somewhere quiet.
- Take it to the professional as directed. Do not try to treat it yourself.
Raptors: do not restrain them yourself
The UC Davis California Raptor Center warns that raptor beaks and talons can seriously injure people, and that extra stress can be deadly to an already injured bird. Its advice is not to attempt care yourself. Where a qualified person directs temporary containment, it describes thick gloves, a towel or blanket, and a ventilated container for transport. Those items support a professional’s instructions; they do not make a raptor safe for an untrained person to grab.
