Mushroom Poisoning in Cats: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

If your cat may have eaten a wild mushroom, call a vet or poison helpline right away, even if the cat seems fine. Here's what to watch for, how it's diagnosed and how it's treated.

If your cat has eaten, or may have eaten, a wild mushroom, call an emergency veterinarian or an animal poison-control service now. Don’t wait for symptoms. Mushrooms vary widely in toxicity. Some cause signs within minutes. Others can look harmless for a day or more before organ damage shows up. A cat that seems normal an hour later hasn’t been cleared.

This guide covers what to do in the first minutes and which signs matter. It also explains why timing differs between mushroom types, how veterinarians work out what happened, and what treatment involves.

What to do right now

  1. Remove your cat from the area and take away any remaining mushroom pieces so no more is eaten.
  2. Call for professional advice immediately. In the US and Canada you can reach ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435, which lists itself as available 24/7, 365 days a year. A consultation fee may apply. Pet Poison Helpline, at (855) 764-7661, also advises contacting a veterinarian or the helpline right away when a pet may have eaten something poisonous. Elsewhere, phone your regular vet or the nearest emergency clinic. Both hotlines are US-based services.
  3. Follow the instructions you’re given. That may mean going to a clinic straight away, even if your cat looks fine.
  4. Collect information, but don’t let it delay you. If you can do it safely and quickly, take clear photos of the mushroom from several angles, including the cap, underside and base. Bag a sample or leftover pieces. Note roughly when and where your cat could have eaten it, and how much might be missing.
  5. Bring the sample and photos with you and tell the clinic you’re on your way.

What not to do

Why “mushroom poisoning” isn’t one condition

Different mushrooms contain different toxins, and each toxin affects the body differently. Pet Poison Helpline notes that effects depend on the species and may involve the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, liver or kidneys. That is why the veterinary response is tailored to the toxin rather than being one standard treatment.

The patterns below come from the Merck Veterinary Manual’s general toxicology chapters on mushrooms (short-latency toxins and long-latency toxins). They describe small animals broadly, not cats specifically. They are a guide to why timing varies, not a way to identify what your cat ate.

PawMergency – Activated Charcoal First Aid Kit Emergency Rescue for Dogs, Cats, Puppy & Pet Poison Kit, Camping Survival Remedy Essential,Oral Anti Diarrhea Digestive Paste Ready Absorb Toxins
  • PREPARED HERO PEACE OF MIND - Pets are pets. They get into things, especially when you're not looking. Be ready when your pet accidentally eats something toxic. Keep PawMergency in your kitchen, car, or travel bag—instant protection for those critical moments at home, the beach, or anywhere life takes you.
  • GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT FOR YOUR PET - One tube covers dogs & cats up to 30 lbs. Dog weighs 31-60 lbs? Get 2 tubes. Dog weighs 61-90 lbs? Get 3 tubes. Dog weighs 91-120 lbs? Get 4 tubes. Dog weighs more than 121 lbs? Get 5 tubes. We recommend giving at least 1cc/1lb of body weight. Less than the required amount won't fully absorb the toxin — make sure you have enough based on your pet's weight.
  • BROAD SPECTRUM ABSORPTION - PawMergency absorbs most common household items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and many more. It works by binding toxins in your pet's digestive tract before they can be absorbed, allowing them to be eliminated through normal bowel movements. A must have for your pet's first aid kit!
  • SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING - PawMergency is proudly made in the USA by a National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) preferred supplier. It’s produced following strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and tested by third-party labs to ensure quality, purity, and potency.
  • 2 YEAR SHELF LIFE - After each use, simply put the cap back on the end of the tube and store for up to 2 years in a cool, dry place.
Toxin pattern Typical timing of first signs Main effects described
Muscarine-containing mushrooms Often within 5–30 minutes; generally within 2 hours Drooling, tearing, urination, diarrhea, vomiting, breathing difficulty and other “cholinergic” signs
Muscimol / ibotenic acid mushrooms Typically 30–120 minutes Disorientation, abnormal posture or movement, poor coordination (ataxia), seizures, slowed breathing, coma
Gastrointestinal irritant mushrooms Minutes to hours Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort
Orellanine-type (kidney-toxic) mushrooms Digestive signs within 72 hours; kidney-failure signs may emerge days later Vomiting and diarrhea first, then increased thirst and urination; in severe cases, reduced urine output

This table is not exhaustive. Other toxin groups exist, including some that affect the liver, and a single mushroom type can’t be pinned to a syndrome from appearance alone.

Signs of mushroom poisoning in cats

Which signs appear depends on the toxin. Based on the sources above, these are the ones to watch for and to report to the vet:

  • Wobbliness or poor coordination
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • In severe cases, collapse or unresponsiveness

Signs linked to the cholinergic pattern

  • Heavy drooling and watery eyes
  • Sudden urination
  • Difficulty breathing

Kidney and general warning signs

  • Drinking more than usual or urinating more
  • Producing little or no urine, in severe cases
  • Weakness or lethargy

Difficulty breathing, seizures, collapse and marked disorientation are emergencies. Go to a clinic immediately; don’t wait for a callback.

Why normal behavior doesn’t mean your cat is safe

Some mushrooms produce signs within minutes. Others have a long latent period. Merck describes orellanine-associated digestive signs within 72 hours, with kidney-failure signs that may appear days later. During that gap a cat can look fine while damage develops. This is why veterinary advice is worth getting after any suspected ingestion, not only once symptoms start. Increased thirst or urination in the days afterward is a reason to call back at once.

How veterinarians diagnose mushroom poisoning

There’s rarely one definitive test. A vet builds the picture from several pieces:

  • Exposure history. What you saw, when, where, and how much may have been eaten.
  • The mushroom itself. Merck says diagnosis for these syndromes can rest on history, identification of the suspected mushroom and consistent clinical signs. Your photos and sample help here, as does expert identification where it’s available. Identification is often hard, so a vet may treat based on signs and risk even without a species name.
  • Physical examination. Heart rate, breathing, hydration, neurologic status and signs of pain or drooling.
  • Laboratory testing. Depending on the suspected syndrome, bloodwork and monitoring of liver values, kidney values, fluid balance and electrolytes can show whether organs are being injured and guide treatment. Specific urine or stomach-content tests exist for some toxins but are not universal.

Because follow-up testing may be needed, don’t be surprised if a vet recommends rechecking kidney or liver values after the first visit, even if your cat seems to be recovering.

Treatment

There is no single antidote for “mushroom poisoning.” Treatment depends on the mushroom, how long ago it was eaten, and how your cat is doing. Merck describes supportive care, fluid and electrolyte management and toxin-specific treatment. Care may include:

  • Decontamination in selected cases, before signs develop, only when a veterinary professional judges it appropriate and safe.
  • Intravenous fluids and electrolyte correction to keep hydration and organ function supported.
  • Treatment aimed at the specific signs, such as the nervous system or cholinergic effects, chosen by the vet based on what the cat is showing.
  • Monitoring of kidney, liver and other values, sometimes over several days when a delayed-onset toxin is possible.

Whether your cat is hospitalized, observed or sent home depends on the vet’s assessment of the suspected toxin and its latency.

Can a mushroom kill a cat?

Yes, some mushroom exposures can be serious: the syndromes above include seizures, breathing depression, coma and kidney failure. Outcomes vary a great deal, though. No reliable feline-specific survival rate for mushroom poisoning was found in the veterinary sources reviewed, and the timing figures above shouldn’t be read as population statistics.

What the veterinary references do say, in general terms:

You can’t tell from outside which category a mushroom belongs to, which is why every suspected ingestion deserves a professional opinion.

What to tell the vet or poison helpline

  • When your cat might have eaten the mushroom, and when you found it
  • Where it grew, such as lawn, woodland, garden bed, compost or houseplant pot
  • How much appears to be missing, and whether any was vomited up
  • Any signs so far, with approximate start times
  • Your cat’s age, weight, and any known kidney, liver or other health conditions and medications
  • Whether other pets could have been exposed

Reducing the risk

  • Check yards, gardens and any outdoor space your cat uses, especially after wet weather, and remove mushrooms you find. Wear gloves and dispose of them where pets can’t reach them. Don’t taste or handle them bare-handed.
  • Supervise outdoor time where mushrooms appear, or keep your cat indoors for a while.
  • Don’t try to sort “safe” from “unsafe” mushrooms. Treat all wild mushrooms as unknown.
  • Keep the numbers for your regular vet, a 24-hour emergency clinic and a poison helpline in your phone.
