Introduce a new cat to other pets gradually: begin with a separate room, move on to scent exchange, then brief visual contact, and only then try supervised time together. Let the animals’ behavior—not a fixed number of days—determine when to advance. If either animal shows sustained fear or aggression, separate them and return to an earlier step.
Prepare a separate room for the new cat
Before bringing the cat home, set up a quiet room with its own food, water, litter box, and resting place. Keep the door closed so the new cat can settle without direct contact, while resident pets retain access to their familiar spaces. Do not arrange a face-to-face meeting on arrival.

This separation gives the newcomer a secure place to retreat and lets everyone adjust to unfamiliar sounds and smells. Cornell’s guidance on feline aggression recommends separate rooms and resources as part of a gradual introduction.
Build familiarity through scent
Once the animals are settled and relaxed, exchange bedding or a soft cloth each has used. For cats, you can also let each explore the other’s area at separate times, without allowing them to meet. Feed or play on opposite sides of the closed door if both animals remain comfortable; begin far enough from the door that they can eat or play normally, then adjust the distance gradually.

If either animal becomes tense, stops eating, or avoids the area, increase the distance or pause. Scent exchange and positive associations are also part of the ASPCA’s cat-introduction guidance.
Try brief visual contact through a barrier
When the animals can tolerate each other’s scent without obvious distress, allow a short look through a secure barrier, such as a properly fitted pet gate or panel. Keep the barrier secure and sessions brief. Give each animal room to move away; do not hold one in place or force it closer.
End the session and restore full separation if either animal fixates, growls, hisses, swats, lunges, hides persistently, or stops eating. The 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines advise returning to an earlier step when tension appears rather than pushing ahead.

Move to supervised time in a shared space
Introducing a cat to another cat
Start with the cats at a comfortable distance in a room with escape routes and places to retreat. Keep the first sessions short. If both cats remain relaxed, offer food or play; end the session while things are still calm. Gradually increase the time together only when both can investigate or disengage without signs of tension.
Introducing a cat to a dog
Keep the dog on a secure leash during early shared-room meetings, and make sure the cat can reach a protected area the dog cannot access. Do not allow the dog to chase or corner the cat. The American Humane Society’s dog-and-cat introduction guidance recommends controlled early meetings and keeping animals separated when they cannot be watched.
For either pairing, supervise closely and separate the animals whenever no responsible person can monitor them. A barrier can help manage access, but it does not replace separate spaces or supervision while safety is uncertain.

Readiness depends on behavior, not a calendar
There is no universal number of days to keep a new cat separated. Cornell says introductions between cats can take weeks to months, and the AAFP guidelines note that some steps may also take weeks or months. Use the animals’ behavior to decide whether to proceed:

- Signs to cautiously progress: relaxed investigation, normal eating, or play while aware of the other animal; the ability to look away or move away without being pursued.
- Signs to pause or step back: growling, hissing, swatting, lunging, persistent hiding, fixation, or loss of appetite around the other animal.
When in doubt, return to a stage the animals handled comfortably and give them more time. The pace should be set by the less comfortable animal, not by a schedule.

Separate the animals and restore a secure barrier between them. Never put your hands between fighting cats; use a barrier to interrupt contact or prevent them from reaching each other. Once they have settled, resume at an earlier, slower stage instead of immediately trying another meeting.

Contact a veterinarian if aggression is severe, repeated, or not improving. A veterinarian can assess health concerns and help determine whether a qualified behavior professional is appropriate. The ASPCA identifies Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists and board-certified veterinary behaviorists as possible sources of help. Gradual introductions can reduce risk, but guidance for the general case cannot establish that every individual pairing will be safe.
How common is tension during cat introductions?
The 2024 AAFP intercat tension guideline reports that 73.3% of respondents in a cited survey said signs of tension began with the introduction of a new cat. That figure describes the survey respondents—not all households or all cat introductions—and is a reason to take early signs seriously rather than rush the process.
