Before your newly adopted cat arrives, set up a quiet home base, secure common household hazards, and gather the essentials. Bring the cat straight to that prepared space, keep the first days calm, and let comfort—not a fixed timetable—guide when you open up more of the home or begin introductions to other pets.
Set up a quiet home base before arrival
Choose a quiet room or dedicated area where your cat can rest without being overwhelmed by noise, visitors, or the activity of the whole household. Set it up before pickup so the cat can go directly there on arrival. ASPCA adoption guidance recommends a comfortable settling space; its advice about establishing a home base when moving is also useful here by analogy, although it is not specifically adoption guidance. - Place food and water bowls, a litter box, a resting spot, and a few toys or familiar items in the space.
- Keep food and water away from the litter box where the layout allows.
- Keep the door closed at first so the cat has a manageable area to explore and you can prevent an accidental dash into the rest of the home.

Inspect the settling area and any rooms the cat may eventually enter. ASPCA recommends looking at a home from a young pet’s perspective; getting down near floor level can help reveal reachable objects and tucked-away hazards. ASPCA’s home inspection guidance.

- Windows and doors: Secure them and check that screens are firmly in place. Be especially alert when entering or leaving while the cat is new to the home.

Repeat the inspection as you give the cat access to more rooms; a space that was out of reach initially may become accessible later.

Make the first days calm and predictable
On arrival, take the cat to the prepared home base and let them observe and settle at their own pace. Keep the environment calm, maintain a predictable routine, and avoid pushing contact. Spend quiet time nearby if the cat seems comfortable, but allow them to retreat or rest undisturbed. Open additional rooms gradually as the cat appears ready; closed doors can keep exploration manageable. Do not treat a suggested settling rule of thumb as a guaranteed schedule—individual cats differ, and the sources do not establish a universal adjustment timetable.

Do not give a new cat immediate free access to resident pets. Start with separation and proceed gradually, watching how the animals respond. For resident cats, the Humane Society of the United States describes scent exchange, supervised exploration, and gradual visual introductions; a baby gate can help maintain physical separation during visual contact. - Keep the animals separate at first. Give the new cat the prepared home base and ensure resident pets cannot enter it.
- Exchange scents. Let each cat become familiar with the other’s scent before arranging a face-to-face meeting.
- Allow supervised exploration. Take turns letting each cat explore areas used by the other while keeping them physically apart.
- Introduce controlled visual contact. Use a baby gate or another secure barrier so the cats can see one another without having direct access.
- Progress only when both seem comfortable. Keep encounters controlled and adjust the pace to the animals rather than following a fixed calendar.
