How to Keep a Dog From Whining or Barking in the Crate at Night

Nighttime crate noise may mean a puppy needs to toilet, a dog is still learning to settle, or confinement is causing distress. Match your response to the signs.

Start by figuring out why your dog is making noise: a puppy who wakes after sleeping may need to go outside, while a dog who becomes distressed as soon as the crate door closes may need slower training or a different sleeping setup. Meet your dog’s needs, build comfort with the crate gradually, and don’t force confinement if your dog is panicking or at risk of injury.

Why dogs whine or bark in the crate at night

When the noise starts is a useful clue. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says vocalizing soon after a dog enters the crate may signal stress or anxiety. If a dog settles and then wakes and vocalizes, it may be bored, hungry, or need to eliminate. These are clues, not a diagnosis: consider the dog’s age, recent toilet break, behavior, and whether the noise is escalating.

A young puppy may not be able to sleep through the night without a bathroom break. A dog that pants heavily, drools excessively, makes frantic escape attempts, or risks hurting itself is showing more than a brief protest; stop the session and reassess rather than waiting it out.

Set up bedtime to make settling easier

  • Give your dog suitable exercise and a chance to eliminate before bed. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends both before crate training.
  • Place the crate or pen where your dog can have company. VCA notes that a crate or pen may be placed in a bedroom at night, rather than isolating the dog.
  • Make sure the crate is an appropriate, comfortable place for your dog to rest. If the dog is not yet comfortable there, work on that during the day instead of expecting it to learn while distressed overnight.

Teach your dog to feel comfortable in the crate

Build positive experiences in small steps. The goal is for your dog to enter willingly and remain relaxed as you gradually increase how long the door is closed and how far away you go.

  • Security - Four toggles on the bottom clips to the cage so it can't blow off in wind, or get taken off some other way. Universal fits for indoor and travel use.
  1. Leave the door open and invite your dog to explore. Feed meals in the crate or reward voluntary entry; don’t push or pull the dog inside.
  2. When your dog is comfortable entering, offer a safe chew or food-stuffed toy and reward calm behavior. Stay nearby.
  3. Close the door for a short period while you remain close. Open it before your dog becomes distressed, then gradually increase the time.
  4. Only add distance after your dog can relax with the door closed. If distress appears, return to an easier step rather than pushing through it.

VCA recommends monitoring early separations with a camera so you can see how your dog responds. A food-stuffed toy can help create a positive association when the dog is calm enough to eat; it is not a fix for panic. AKC notes that crate training may take anywhere from a day to several months, depending on the dog’s personality and prior experience with confinement, so there is no reliable universal timetable.

What to do when your dog makes noise overnight

If a puppy wakes and may need to pee

Take the puppy outside calmly on leash. Keep the trip brief and focused on toileting; praise the puppy for eliminating, then return it to the crate with a small treat. Avoid turning the break into play or a long attention session. Consider how long the puppy has been asleep and when it last went outside rather than treating every sound as a bathroom request.

If the dog is briefly vocalizing during early training

If the vocalizing is mild and does not escalate, a short pause may give the dog a chance to settle. But if the dog cannot manage the current training step, make the next session easier: shorten the time with the door closed, stay closer, or return to open-door practice. Don’t ignore a likely toilet need or signs of panic.

If distress persists or intensifies

Stop the crate session if your dog shows persistent vocalizing, heavy panting, excessive salivation, frantic escape attempts, destructive behavior, or risk of injury. VCA advises ending a session when a dog is very distressed and contacting a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist. A crate is not suitable for every dog: the ASPCA suggests a room behind a baby gate as an alternative when crate confinement adds stress.

Choose the response that fits the problem

Option Best fit What to consider
Gradual crate training Your dog is not panicking and can learn to relax in confinement. Look for voluntary entry, settling between sessions, and comfort as duration increases.
Calm overnight toilet break A puppy wakes after settling and may need to eliminate. Consider the puppy’s age, time since its last break, and whether it returns to rest afterward.
Food-stuffed toy or puzzle Your dog is calm enough to eat and benefits from a positive crate activity. Choose something safe for your individual dog. A toy is not a substitute for help with severe anxiety.
Puppy-proofed gated area or exercise pen Crating triggers distress or escape attempts. Check escape safety, supervision, and access to an appropriate toilet area if needed.
Veterinary or behavior professional Your dog panics, remains distressed, risks self-injury, or makes no progress. Look for relevant qualifications, coordination with your veterinarian, and an individualized plan.

When to get professional help

Persistent barking or howling when left alone, pacing, house-soiling, destruction, and escape attempts can be associated with separation anxiety. These signs warrant a conversation with your veterinarian, especially if they are severe or a health problem could be contributing. The ASPCA says treatment focuses on teaching the dog to tolerate being alone gradually, without triggering fear, and recommends a qualified behavior professional to help create a plan.

Do not use prolonged crate confinement to try to make a panicking dog get used to it. VCA’s crate-training guidance puts it plainly: “A crate is not an excuse to ignore the dog!”
