Keep the tortoise out of draughts, prevent chilling and overheating, and ask a veterinarian whether it is fit to travel. If the trip crosses a border or state line, check the rules for the actual route, destination and carrier before setting out.
What a tortoise needs during a journey
Travel can expose a tortoise to movement, unfamiliar surroundings and changing temperatures. The practical goal is not to make the trip resemble its normal enclosure, but to transport it safely while limiting the journey and avoiding preventable temperature and escape risks. The RSPCA’s “Taking your reptile home” guidance says travel time should be kept to a minimum to reduce stress. It does not set a universal maximum journey length or a single safe travel temperature for every tortoise.

Plan around the individual animal and the trip: its species and health, the expected duration, the weather, the transport mode and the destination all matter. If there is doubt about whether the tortoise should travel, consult a veterinarian rather than assuming that a container or heat source makes the trip suitable. General pet-travel advice can help with vehicle safety and veterinary planning, but it should not be mistaken for a tortoise-specific temperature prescription.
Keep the plan simple: choose a suitable box, prepare and secure it before the tortoise goes inside, and arrange the route so the animal is not travelling longer than necessary. A good container reduces the risks of escape, sliding and exposure to draughts; it does not remove the need to monitor conditions or consider whether the trip is appropriate.

Choose a secure, ventilated carrier
The RSPCA’s “Taking your reptile home” guidance describes ventilated plastic containers with soft absorbent paper on the base and a securely fitted lid for young and adult tortoises. For adult tortoises, it also describes larger ventilated plastic containers, including storage-box-style designs with small ventilation holes. These are examples of suitable design features, not a guarantee that any plastic box or storage container is safe.
Choose a container that fits the tortoise, has enough ventilation, closes securely and can be fixed in place in the vehicle. It must prevent escape without leaving the tortoise exposed to draughts. Line the base with soft absorbent paper, as the RSPCA recommends. Check that the lid is firmly fitted before departure and remains closed when the container is moved.
When comparing containers, look beyond the material or product label. A reptile transport container is useful only if its ventilation, lid, size and vehicle stability work together. A container that is easy to carry but cannot be secured may slide; one with openings that are blocked by its position in the vehicle may not provide the intended airflow. A roomy storage box is not automatically a good choice if its lid is loose or it cannot be fastened safely. Treat the following as practical checks rather than a brand or model recommendation:
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ventilation | The container needs airflow; do not use a sealed box. Make sure the openings remain unobstructed when it is placed in the vehicle. |
| Secure lid | A firmly fitted lid helps prevent escape during handling and travel. Check the closure before departure rather than assuming a lid that rests on top is secure. |
| Suitable size | Select a container appropriate for the individual tortoise rather than assuming one size works for all. A container must be manageable to secure while still suited to the animal. |
| Soft, absorbent lining | Paper on the base provides the lining specified in the RSPCA’s reptile guidance. |
| Vehicle stability | The container should be secured so it cannot slide or tip during the journey. Stability is part of the setup, not an optional convenience. |
The RSPCA recommends transporting reptiles individually to reduce injury risk. Do not put multiple tortoises together in one travel container merely because they normally share space. If you need to transport more than one, plan separate, individually secured containers where appropriate. The recommendation is about reducing injury risk during transport; it is not a claim that every animal can safely travel under all circumstances.
There is no product brand or universal container dimension specified in the RSPCA guidance. Accordingly, choose by functional fit: ventilation, a secure closure, suitable size, an absorbent paper base and the ability to secure the container in the vehicle. Do not treat a particular storage box as automatically safe just because it resembles the example in the guidance.

Set up and secure the container before departure
- Prepare the base. Add soft absorbent paper lining before placing the tortoise inside. Use the paper as a simple absorbent surface, not as a substitute for an appropriate container or veterinary advice.
- Check the closure and ventilation. Confirm the lid fits securely and that the ventilation openings are not obstructed. Check both features before the box is in the vehicle, when it is easier to see whether the lid is seated and openings are clear.
- Place the tortoise inside and close the container. Make sure the lid is properly fitted before moving the box. Avoid carrying or loading an open container that could allow the tortoise to escape.
- Secure the container in the vehicle. Position and fasten it so it cannot slide or tip during travel. A loose container can move suddenly and injure the tortoise. Check that the way it is secured does not block ventilation.
- Keep it out of draughts. The RSPCA’s reptile-specific advice warns against exposing the tortoise to draughts. At the same time, do not seal the container to try to block airflow; the container needs ventilation.
- Recheck the setup before setting off. Confirm that the lid remains secure, the box is stable and air can still pass through its ventilation openings. If the container shifts during loading, secure it again before departure.
The RSPCA’s care sheet for African spurred (sulcata) tortoises offers a species-specific example of an insulated wooden box lined with shredded newspaper, with ventilation, a tight lid and measures to prevent sliding. That example applies to the named species care guidance; it does not mean every tortoise needs a wooden box, insulation or that particular lining. For other tortoises, follow advice appropriate to their species and circumstances. For a general travel setup, the RSPCA’s broader reptile guidance describes ventilated plastic containers and soft absorbent paper.
Manage temperature without creating a burn or overheating risk
Protect the tortoise from both cold and excessive heat. The RSPCA’s reptile guidance says that, in cold weather or on a longer journey, a small heat source such as a hot water bottle or microwaveable heat pad may be used with care to avoid overheating. Wrap the heat source in a towel and place it outside the transport container next to one end.

Never put a heat source inside the container. The tortoise could sit against it, suffer thermal burns and be unable to move away even if it becomes too hot. Keep heat conditional rather than treating it as standard equipment for every trip: whether it is needed depends on the conditions and the individual tortoise, and it requires attention to avoid overheating.
Placing a wrapped heat source beside one end rather than inside the box is important because it avoids direct contact with the animal and follows the RSPCA’s stated precaution. Do not improvise by putting a warm object under or among the tortoise, or by enclosing a heat source inside the container. A heat source is not a reason to extend a journey or to stop considering weather, ventilation and the animal’s condition.
The RSPCA’s general pet-travel guidance advises keeping the vehicle and container well ventilated and cool, and never leaving an animal in a warm or hot car. This is general advice for pets, not a tortoise-specific temperature protocol. The guidance does not establish one safe temperature range or maximum travel duration for all tortoises, so do not apply dog or cat thresholds to a tortoise. If temperatures or travel circumstances concern you, ask a veterinarian rather than guessing at a numeric target.

Plan the route and journey length
Keep travel time as short as practical, as the RSPCA recommends for reptiles. Before leaving, consider the route, likely stops, weather and mode of transport so you can avoid unnecessary delay and plan for the conditions the tortoise will encounter. Do not assume that adding a heat source makes a long journey safe; its use is conditional and overheating remains a risk.

Useful planning starts before loading the tortoise. Work out the route and any necessary stops, allow time to secure the container properly, and check what the journey will involve rather than relying on a best-case travel estimate. If a delay could make the trip much longer, consider how that changes the need for veterinary advice and temperature planning. The objective is not to create a detailed temperature formula—the RSPCA does not provide one for all tortoises—but to avoid unnecessary travel time and foreseeable exposure to cold, heat or draughts.
For car travel, the RSPCA’s general pet guidance supports keeping the vehicle and container ventilated and cool and warns against leaving an animal in a warm or hot car. Do not leave the tortoise in a parked warm vehicle while making a stop. If the tortoise’s fitness to travel is uncertain, seek veterinary advice. The same general guidance advises veterinary checks before long journeys; because it is general pet guidance, understand this as planning advice rather than a tortoise-specific clinical standard.
For transport other than a private car, check the carrier’s rules directly before booking or departure. Requirements may differ by transport mode and operator. Confirm that the planned container is permitted, that it can be kept secure and that the arrangements do not expose the tortoise to avoidable temperature extremes or draughts. A carrier’s acceptance of a box does not itself establish that the trip is suitable for the tortoise, so consider both the operator’s rules and veterinary advice.
Check legal and carrier rules for the exact route
Animal-movement rules depend on where the trip starts and ends, the route and the transport mode. Check the official requirements for the actual destination and every relevant jurisdiction; a rule for one country, state or carrier should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Make these checks before travel is booked or begun, because rules can determine whether a tortoise or particular species may enter or move through a jurisdiction.

Travel between U.S. states or territories
The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) says interstate movement requirements are set by the receiving state or territory. Its page, “Take a Pet from One U.S. State or Territory to Another (Interstate),” was last modified June 10, 2026. Contact the relevant state or territory authorities and a veterinarian as soon as the travel details are known, rather than relying on a rule from the state of departure. The receiving jurisdiction’s requirements are the ones to establish for the intended movement.
Bringing a pet reptile into the United States
APHIS’s “Bring a Pet Reptile into the United States” page, last modified August 31, 2026, lists leopard tortoises, African spurred tortoises and Bell’s hingeback tortoises as prohibited from entry to the United States under APHIS rules. That restriction is specific to U.S. entry and the listed species; it is not a worldwide rule. APHIS also directs travelers to check relevant Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state or territory, and airline requirements. Verify current rules with the authorities responsible for the actual journey before making travel arrangements.
For journeys elsewhere, consult the official authorities for the places involved and the carrier you plan to use. A U.S. rule cannot be used as a substitute for another country’s import requirements, and an airline or other carrier may have its own conditions in addition to government rules. Check the route rather than assuming that a familiar rule applies to a different destination or mode.

- The tortoise’s fitness for the planned trip has been discussed with a veterinarian if there is any doubt.
- The container is ventilated, suitable for the individual tortoise, lined with soft absorbent paper and fitted with a secure lid.
- The tortoise is transported individually where appropriate, and the container is secured against sliding.
- The lid is properly fitted, ventilation openings are clear, and the container remains stable in its travel position.
- The journey is as short as practical, and the plan accounts for draughts, cold and overheating.
- If a heat source is needed, it is wrapped and placed outside the container beside one end—not inside it—and overheating is avoided.
- The tortoise will not be left in a warm or hot car.
- The rules for the destination, route and carrier have been checked with the relevant authorities or operator.
Review the checklist after the box is placed in the vehicle: moving it into position can change whether it is secure or whether an opening is blocked. If any item cannot be resolved—such as the suitability of the trip, the carrier’s acceptance of the container or the applicable entry rules—pause and get the relevant veterinary, operator or official guidance before departure.
After arrival
Once you reach the destination, follow the RSPCA’s reptile guidance on settling the animal and use care appropriate to its species and circumstances. The travel guidance does not prescribe a universal settling timetable or a single post-arrival routine for every tortoise. If the animal appears unwell or you are concerned about its condition, contact a veterinarian. Avoid assuming that every tortoise will respond to travel in the same way or that a particular recovery period applies across species.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of container should I use to travel with a tortoise?
The RSPCA’s “Taking your reptile home” guidance describes a ventilated plastic container with a securely fitted lid and soft absorbent paper on the base. Choose a size appropriate to the individual tortoise, keep the ventilation clear and secure the container so it cannot slide. A storage-box-style container is an example, not a guarantee that every box is suitable.
Can two tortoises travel in the same container?
The RSPCA recommends transporting reptiles individually to reduce injury risk. Use separate, individually secured containers where appropriate rather than assuming tortoises that share space at home should travel together.
Should I put a heat pad or hot water bottle inside the carrier?
No. If a small heat source is needed in cold weather or on a longer trip, the RSPCA says to wrap it in a towel and place it outside the container beside one end. A heat source inside can cause burns, and the tortoise may not move away if it becomes too hot.
How long can a tortoise travel safely?
The RSPCA says reptile travel time should be kept to a minimum, but it does not give one maximum duration that applies to every tortoise. Species, health, weather and transport circumstances differ. Ask a veterinarian if you are unsure whether the planned trip is suitable, and avoid assuming that a heat source makes a long journey safe.
What temperature should I keep the tortoise at during travel?
The guidance does not establish a universal safe travel temperature range for all tortoises. Keep the animal out of draughts and prevent chilling and overheating. For car journeys, the RSPCA’s general pet advice is to keep the vehicle and container ventilated and cool and never leave an animal in a warm or hot car; ask a veterinarian about an individual trip.
What paperwork or permissions do I need to travel with a tortoise?
Requirements depend on the destination, route and carrier. Check the official authorities for each relevant jurisdiction and ask the operator about its own rules. In the United States, APHIS says interstate requirements are set by the receiving state or territory; its import guidance also lists certain tortoise species prohibited from U.S. entry.
The Bottom Line
Keep tortoise travel short and planned: use a properly ventilated container with a secure lid and soft absorbent paper, transport individually where appropriate, and secure the box so it cannot slide. Prevent draughts, chilling and overheating; if a heat source is needed, wrap it and keep it outside the container beside one end. Ask a veterinarian about fitness for travel and verify the rules for the exact route, destination and carrier.
