Separate your pet from the mouse, any trap, and any rodent bait. If your pet may have eaten poison—or the mouse may have eaten bait—call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly, even if your pet seems fine. Do not induce vomiting or give medication or home remedies unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

What to do right away

A mouse encounter does not automatically mean your pet is poisoned or infected. The immediate priority is to prevent further contact and work out what might have happened. Keep your pet away from the mouse, nearby bait, and traps. If the mouse is alive, do not let your pet continue to chase or bite it.

  1. Separate your pet from the area. Put the animal somewhere secure while you check for bait or a trap. Avoid touching rodenticide or the mouse with bare hands.
  2. Note the contact. Did your pet carry or bite the mouse, eat any part of it, or get bitten? Record when the encounter happened and whether you have seen bait or traps nearby. These details help a veterinarian assess the exposure.
  3. Check for possible poison exposure. Consider whether rodent bait is used in your home, yard, or a place your pet visits. A mouse that was poisoned can pose a risk if your pet eats it. If exposure is known or reasonably possible, call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.
  4. Save useful product information if it is readily available. A photo of the bait package or its label can help the veterinary team identify the active ingredient. Do not delay calling while you search for packaging.
  5. Arrange veterinary care if advised or if your pet is unwell. Tell the clinic what happened, when it happened, and what you know about bait, traps, bites, or ingestion. Follow its instructions about coming in and transporting your pet.

Do not wait for symptoms after a suspected bait exposure. The American Veterinary Medical Association warns that eating rodent poison—or an animal that ate poison—can cause serious or life-threatening illness. Some poison effects are delayed, so acting normal immediately after the encounter does not establish that your pet is safe.

Why the kind of rodenticide matters

Rodenticides work in different ways, and secondary poisoning—the pet being exposed by eating a poisoned rodent—is not equally documented for every type. That difference is useful context for a veterinarian, not a way to rule out danger at home. Tell the veterinary team about any possible exposure rather than trying to decide that a particular bait is harmless.

Exposure or bait type What the veterinary references say What to do
Direct ingestion of bait The AVMA warns that rodent poison can cause potentially serious or life-threatening illness. The product’s active ingredient affects the assessment. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Share the product label or a photo if readily available.
Eating a mouse that may have consumed anticoagulant bait VCA describes secondary anticoagulant poisoning in cats that eat a poisoned rodent as rare. “Rare” does not mean impossible and does not establish that a particular pet is safe. Report the possible exposure, especially if the bait or mouse’s history is uncertain. Do not wait for bleeding or other signs.
Eating a mouse that may have consumed bromethalin bait VCA describes relay toxicity in cats anecdotally. This is not a quantified estimate of risk after any single encounter. Contact a veterinary professional promptly if exposure is plausible. Do not use the limited evidence to dismiss the possibility.

These references discuss specific rodenticides in cats; they do not provide a numerical chance of poisoning after one mouse encounter or establish that every bait behaves the same way. The amount and type of bait, whether the pet ate the rodent, and the timing all matter to a professional assessment. Do not self-triage from a product category alone.

Symptoms can be delayed—do not wait for them

Two poisoning timelines illustrate why a pet that initially looks normal still needs prompt advice if exposure is possible. They are not a complete list of every rodenticide or a prediction of what will happen to an individual animal.

Anticoagulant rodenticides

VCA says clotting factors take one to two days to be used up after anticoagulant exposure, and signs of blood loss may not appear until three to seven days after ingestion. Possible signs include weakness, pale gums, difficulty breathing, bruising, swelling, vomiting, and bloody or dark, tarry stool. Do not wait for these signs before calling about a known or suspected exposure.

Bromethalin

VCA says signs may appear within hours or as late as five to seven days after exposure. Neurological signs can include poor coordination, weakness, tremors, seizures, or paralysis. If you notice these or other concerning changes, seek urgent veterinary care and report the mouse encounter and any possible bait exposure.

Do not induce vomiting, give activated charcoal, or administer medicine or home remedies unless a veterinary professional directs you. VCA specifically warns that there is no safe way to induce vomiting in cats at home after bromethalin exposure. Its anticoagulant guidance also cautions against trying to make a cat vomit at home and says activated charcoal should only be given by a veterinarian. A pet’s species, condition, timing, and the substance involved affect what treatment is appropriate.

Infection is possible, but a mouse encounter is not a diagnosis

Rodents can carry infections. One concern described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is leptospirosis. Animals may be exposed through contact with infected rodent urine or contaminated water, through a rodent bite or damaged skin, or by eating infected tissues. A pet that caught a mouse is not necessarily infected; the encounter alone cannot establish that it has leptospirosis.

The CDC says leptospirosis is uncommon in cats, but outdoor cats may face greater exposure through infected rodents, wildlife, or contaminated water. Dogs and cats may show signs such as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, joint or muscle pain, eye or nasal discharge, changes in urination, or jaundice. In dogs, vomiting, dehydration, and back pain may follow within days; signs in cats can resemble those in dogs. These signs are not specific to leptospirosis, so a veterinarian must assess the pet.

Contact a veterinarian if your pet was bitten, ate the mouse, becomes ill, or had another relevant exposure such as contact with potentially contaminated water. Explain what happened and when. The veterinarian can decide whether an examination, testing, or treatment is warranted. The CDC says early veterinary diagnosis and antibiotics can help an animal recover faster and help prevent severe organ damage; organ damage can be permanent.

The available guidance describes exposure routes and possible poisoning mechanisms, not the probability of infection or poisoning from one mouse. Whether your pet ate the mouse, whether bait may have been involved, whether it was bitten, and local conditions all affect the assessment. Do not infer a percentage from the fact that an exposure route exists—or from the absence of immediate symptoms.

How to handle and clean up the mouse safely

Rodent urine, droppings, and nesting material can contaminate surfaces. The CDC recommends steps that reduce the chance of stirring contaminated particles into the air. Keep pets away while you clean, and do not sweep or vacuum rodent waste or nesting material.

  1. Put on rubber or plastic gloves. Avoid direct contact with the mouse, droppings, urine, or nesting material.
  2. Wet the material thoroughly. Use a bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant, following the product label. Let it soak for five minutes or for the contact time specified on the label, whichever applies.
  3. Wipe it up. Use paper towels to collect the wet material. Do not dry-sweep or vacuum it.
  4. Disinfect hard surfaces. Clean the area where the mouse or waste was found, following the disinfectant’s label instructions.
  5. Bag and discard a dead mouse. Spray the mouse and surrounding area with disinfectant and allow the required contact time. Place the mouse and cleanup materials in a sealed bag, then put that bag inside a second bag before disposal.
  6. Finish with handwashing. Remove gloves carefully and wash your hands.

If there is substantial contamination or the disinfectant label gives different instructions, follow the applicable product directions and CDC guidance. Keep your pet out of the area until cleanup is complete.

How to reduce repeat encounters

The CDC recommends limiting pets’ access to rodents and keeping rodent problems under control. Start by finding and sealing entry points to the home. If you use a traditional snap trap, place it only where your pet cannot reach it, and follow the trap instructions. A trap is for rodent control; it does not treat or protect a pet that may already have been exposed.

Be especially cautious with bait and traps in a pet household. The CDC says traps and bait should be kept out of pets’ reach, while the AVMA warns that poisoned bait and animals that have eaten poison can endanger pets. Do not place bait or traps where your animal can investigate, chew, or carry them. If you suspect your pet has contacted bait or a poisoned rodent, contact a veterinary professional rather than trying to manage the exposure with a household product.

As the CDC puts it: “To help prevent leptospirosis infection in animals, limit access to rodents (rats, mice, or other animal pests) and keep rodent problems under control.” This prevention advice lowers opportunities for contact; it cannot establish that a pet has or has not been exposed in a particular incident.
