A solar eclipse is unlikely to harm a typical dog or cat simply because the sky gets dark. The bigger risks are usually the surrounding circumstances: crowds, traffic, travel, open doors, loud celebrations, and a stressed owner bringing an already-anxious pet into an unfamiliar viewing area.
Most indoor pets can stay home and follow their normal routine. Some may briefly hide, pace, pant, whine, howl, seek reassurance, or act as though nighttime has arrived early. Pets with a history of noise phobia, separation anxiety, storm fear, or general anxiety deserve a little more planning.
Do dogs and cats need eclipse glasses?
Usually, no. Veterinary guidance from Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, the American Kennel Club, and other veterinary sources does not recommend buying or forcing dogs and cats to wear eclipse glasses. Most pets do not stare at the Sun for long periods on their own.
That advice is not permission to make a pet look at the Sun. Deliberately encouraging a dog or cat to stare at an eclipse without suitable eye protection could damage the retina. Do not point the animal toward the sky, hold its head up, or use a phone to try to capture its reaction.

- 2023 ANNULAR AND 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES - On October 14th 2023, an annular eclipse (when the sun forms a ring around the moon) will cross the United States from Oregon to Texas. We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.
Keep human eclipse viewers away from pets, too. A dog that chews and swallows part of a viewer could face a foreign-body or digestive problem. For people, ordinary sunglasses are not safe during a partial or annular eclipse. NASA recommends undamaged solar viewers that meet ISO 12312-2. During a total eclipse, unprotected viewing is safe only during the short period of totality, when the Sun’s bright face is completely covered; protection is needed during every partial phase and throughout an annular eclipse. Those human viewing rules do not mean a pet needs to be made part of the viewing.
The safest plan: let your pet have a normal day
For most dogs and cats, the lowest-risk option is a familiar home environment rather than an eclipse festival, park, road trip, or crowded viewing field. Veterinary experts generally identify the event around the eclipse—not the brief change in sunlight—as the more likely source of stress.
- Keep the usual schedule. Feed, walk, play with, and medicate your pet at the normal times. A predictable routine gives an anxious animal fewer changes to process.
- Provide a retreat. Leave access to a quiet room, crate, covered bed, or another place your pet already chooses for rest. Add a familiar toy, food puzzle, or safe chew if those normally help.
- Allow hiding. If your cat goes under the bed or your dog settles in a quiet corner, do not drag the animal out to “show” it the eclipse or force interaction. A retreat can be a useful coping strategy as long as the space is safe.
- Keep doors and gates secure. If visitors will be arriving, leaving, or moving between the house and yard, use more than one barrier. A closed interior door plus a baby gate, exercise pen, or leash can prevent a frightened pet from slipping outside.
- Keep cats indoors. In areas expecting heavy eclipse traffic, outdoor cats face additional risks from vehicles, unfamiliar animals, and escape. Bringing them inside before visitors and activity increase is the safer choice.
What behavior might you see?
There is no universal “eclipse reaction.” One pet may sleep through the event while another briefly behaves as though evening has arrived. Possible signs include:
- hiding or seeking extra contact
- pacing, panting, or repeated yawning
- whining, barking, or howling
- lip licking or other signs of unease
- starting a nighttime routine early
- confusion or increased alertness
- attempts to escape
Dogs can also respond to their owners’ behavior. Someone who repeatedly rushes outside, looks up excitedly, reacts loudly, or carries a dog into a dense crowd may unintentionally make the situation more unsettling. Keep your own movements and voice calm, and avoid turning the animal into an attraction.

These signs do not prove that the eclipse itself caused distress. A thunderstorm, fireworks display, traffic, unfamiliar guests, or a disrupted routine may be the real trigger. NASA notes that the evidence on animal responses to eclipses remains limited, with many historical reports being anecdotal or lacking enough detail for firm conclusions.
Should you take a dog to an eclipse event?
Usually, leaving the dog at home is the better choice. A viewing event may involve crowds, vehicles, strange dogs, loud cheering, heat, long periods of waiting, and an owner who is focused on equipment rather than the leash. None of those conditions is necessary for a dog to experience the eclipse.
If a dog must attend, reduce the practical risks:
- Use a secure leash and maintain close control, even if the dog is normally reliable off leash.
- Make sure the collar tag is readable and the microchip registration and phone number are current.
- Bring water, but do not let the dog roam around unfamiliar animals or people.
- Leave if the dog begins escalating—especially frantic pulling, repeated escape attempts, intense panting, or inability to settle.
- Never force the dog to wear eyewear or look at the Sun.
Extra precautions for pet birds, chickens, horses, and livestock
Animals that rely more heavily on the light–dark cycle may show more noticeable changes than an indoor dog or cat. A pet bird may become quiet, return to its perch, or alter its vocalizations as darkness arrives. Chickens and some dusk-active animals may also respond to the sudden change.
For birds and other small outdoor animals, keep the enclosure secure and free of hazards, and avoid adding flashes, loud music, or other stimulation during the darkened period. Continue normal care rather than trying to provoke a reaction.

Horses, cattle, and other herd animals may freeze, become confused, or act erratically, although some show little or no obvious response. Before the eclipse, check that their familiar area is free of hazards such as holes, ravines, broken fencing, and loose equipment. Avoid working among unsettled animals during the event. Keep a safe distance and do not add loud noises or flashes that could startle them.
Medication is not a last-minute experiment
Do not give a pet a sedative, anti-anxiety drug, or supplement specifically for the eclipse unless your veterinarian has recommended that product and dose for that animal. A medication that is appropriate for one pet may be unsafe for another, and trying something new immediately before an unusual event makes it harder to identify side effects.
If your pet has severe storm or noise anxiety, ask your veterinarian about a management plan well in advance. That plan may include environmental changes, behavior work, or prescribed medication, depending on the animal’s history and health.

Brief hiding, mild restlessness, or a short-lived change in vocalization usually calls for observation and a calm environment. Contact your veterinarian if the behavior is severe, continues after the event, repeatedly happens during unusual-light events, or creates a risk of injury or escape.

FAQ
Can an eclipse blind my dog or cat?
A pet is not automatically blinded by an eclipse, and ordinary dogs and cats generally do not need eclipse glasses. However, deliberately making an animal stare at the Sun without appropriate protection could damage its retina. Do not encourage direct viewing.
Will my pet panic during a total solar eclipse?
Not necessarily. Reactions vary widely. Many pets show no obvious response, while some briefly hide, pace, pant, vocalize, or become confused. Crowds, travel, traffic, loud celebrations, and changes in routine may be more stressful than the eclipse.
Should I keep my cat inside during an eclipse?
Yes, particularly in an area expecting large crowds or increased traffic. Keeping the cat indoors reduces the chances of escape, vehicle injury, fights with unfamiliar animals, and other disruptions.
Can I give my dog calming medication for the eclipse?
Only use medication or supplements if your veterinarian has advised you on the specific product and dose. Do not test a new anti-anxiety treatment on eclipse day. For a pet with known anxiety, discuss options with a veterinarian beforehand.
The Bottom Line
Keep dogs and cats at home, preserve their normal routine, and give them a quiet place to retreat. Do not force eclipse glasses on them or make them look at the Sun. Secure doors, gates, and identification if visitors or travel are involved, and plan ahead for pets with serious anxiety. For horses, livestock, birds, and other animals, use familiar secure surroundings and avoid startling them during the sudden darkness.
