Look for a stable, supportive surface; an entry your dog can use without climbing or jumping; secure traction around the bed; and a cover that stays clean and dry. Memory-foam or other orthopedic-style beds can help some dogs with arthritis or mobility problems, but the label alone does not make a bed suitable for every dog. If your dog has new or persistent pain, stiffness or difficulty moving, arrange a veterinary assessment—bedding can improve comfort but cannot diagnose or treat the underlying problem.
Start with your dog, not the bed label
“Orthopedic” is not a universal standard. A useful bed is one that supports your individual dog while allowing safe, easy movement. Canine Arthritis Resources and Education recommends supportive bedding such as memory foam for dogs with arthritis, and VCA also suggests considering orthopedic or memory-foam beds for osteoarthritis. PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed guidance, updated January 2, 2026, emphasizes that size, support needs and sleeping posture should guide the choice. (CARE; VCA; PetMD)

Watch how your dog sleeps
- Stretches out: An open, flat sleeping area usually gives more room than a tightly enclosed nest.
- Curls up: A defined edge can provide a boundary that some dogs prefer.
- Rests the head on an edge: A bolster may be comfortable, provided the dog can still enter easily.
- Changes position often: A stable surface with enough room to turn may be more useful than a deep, loose cushion.
These observations are selection clues, not a medical test. A dog that suddenly changes sleeping posture, struggles to settle or avoids the bed may be uncomfortable for reasons that require veterinary attention.
Notice the difficult movement
Watch the complete sequence: walking to the bed, turning, lying down, standing and leaving. A dog may tolerate the surface once lying down but still be unable to step over a tall bolster or regain footing on a slippery floor. Note whether the problem is the height of the edge, the softness of the cushion, the bed’s tendency to slide, or the dog’s ability to reach a favorite location.

Choose support that matches the dog’s body and posture
Memory foam and orthopedic construction
For dogs with arthritis or osteoarthritis, supportive material such as memory foam is a reasonable option to consider. The goal is a resting surface that does not collapse immediately under the dog and that remains stable while the dog turns or rises. CARE and VCA identify memory-foam or orthopedic beds as possible choices for dogs with joint problems, while PetMD stresses that the appropriate support depends on the dog’s size and needs. (CARE; VCA; PetMD)
Do not treat the word “orthopedic” as proof that a bed will relieve pain or prevent disease. The veterinary guidance does not establish one universally superior bed or a head-to-head trial showing that a particular design cures arthritis. Select for the dog’s actual comfort, access and ability to move.
Bolsters, edges and front openings
Edges can suit a dog that curls up or props its head, but bolsters on all four sides may force a dog with stiff joints to climb over an obstacle. A bed with a front opening, a recessed sleeping area or a low edge can retain some boundary support while reducing the step required to get in. CARE and VCA Canada specifically describe low or recessed access as useful considerations for mobility-compromised dogs. (CARE; VCA Canada)
Fit the usable sleeping area
Measure the area your dog actually uses when stretched out or curled up, then allow room for turning without pushing against a wall or bolster. A bed can be large overall yet have a small, raised interior. The dog should be able to lie in its preferred posture without hanging off the edge and should not need to balance on a narrow, unstable cushion.
Check the bed after your dog has slept in it, rather than judging only by its packaged dimensions. Look for compressed spots, a cover that bunches under the hips, or an insert that shifts when the dog turns. Those observations can reveal whether the support remains even through the night. If the dog repeatedly chooses the floor, another room or a different cushion, treat that preference as useful information and reassess the bed’s firmness, heat retention, entry and location.
Make getting in and out safe
For a dog’s own bed
A low-entry or recessed bed avoids the need to jump onto a raised platform. Place the opening toward the route your dog naturally takes so it does not have to pivot sharply at the threshold. Keep the bed on a level surface and check that the base does not fold, tip or slide as the dog steps in.

For a dog that sleeps on a human bed
Climbing onto a human bed can be difficult for dogs with musculoskeletal problems. VCA and CARE suggest a ramp or steps as an access aid, provided the dog can use the aid safely. (VCA; CARE)
Recommended Free Tools
Introduce the ramp or stairs while your dog is calm and supervised. Position the aid so it cannot slide away from the bed, and watch whether the dog can turn around and descend without hesitation. If the dog is unstable, frightened or unable to use the aid consistently, a low bed on the floor is the safer arrangement to discuss with your veterinarian.
Use a simple access check
- Invite your dog to approach the bed without lifting or pulling.
- Watch whether the dog can step in without catching a paw on the edge.
- Observe lying down, turning and standing—not just entry.
- Check the exit when the dog is sleepy, because rising can be harder than lying down.
- Remove or redesign the setup if the dog slips, jumps awkwardly, becomes stuck or avoids the bed.
Improve traction around the bed
A supportive mattress cannot compensate for a slippery approach. CARE recommends non-slip flooring under and around the bed, and VCA recommends improving traction throughout the home for dogs with osteoarthritis. (CARE; VCA)
- Place a rug or mat with a secure backing where the dog walks, turns and stands up.
- Cover the entire approach, not only the footprint of the bed.
- Keep the surface flat so edges do not become trip hazards.
- Recheck traction after washing; a backing that has become loose can make the problem worse.
Traction is especially important for dogs that hesitate before rising or whose legs splay on smooth flooring. If the dog still cannot stand reliably on a non-slip surface, treat that as a mobility concern rather than a bedding defect.
Put the bed in a comfortable, practical location
Warmth without drafts
CARE recommends a warm, non-drafty location for an arthritic dog’s bedding. A spot away from direct drafts may help a stiff dog settle, but warmth should be balanced against the room and the dog’s ability to move away if it becomes uncomfortable. (CARE)

Keep the route clear
Leave enough space for a slow, wide turn and an unobstructed exit. Do not place the bed where a dog must squeeze between furniture, cross a slick threshold or step over clutter. Accessibility matters every time the dog uses the bed, including at night.
Keep bedding clean and dry
Texas A&M veterinary-faculty guidance puts cleanability first: “The most important aspect of bedding is your ability to keep it clean and dry, which will help to keep your pet free of disease and more comfortable.” (Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences)
For a dog with limited mobility, a machine-washable bed or removable cover is particularly practical. VCA Canada recommends a bed or cover that can be machine washed, while Texas A&M emphasizes maintaining dry bedding. (VCA Canada; Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences)
- Follow the manufacturer’s washing and drying instructions.
- Return the cover only when it is fully dry.
- Check the insert for dampness, flattened areas or damage, not just the outer fabric.
- Keep a clean replacement cover or second washable sleep surface available if possible.
- Clean accidents promptly so moisture does not remain against the dog’s skin.
A washable cover is useful only if the underlying cushion also remains dry and supportive. Replace or repair a bed that stays damp, develops a persistent odor or no longer holds its shape.
Use heated beds cautiously
A heated bed or pet heating pad may appeal to some senior dogs, but the American Kennel Club warns that a dog with limited mobility may overheat or suffer burns if it cannot get up and move away. Supervise use of heated beds and heating pads. (American Kennel Club)
- Use heat only when you can observe the dog’s response.
- Make sure the dog can leave the heated area without climbing over a high edge.
- Stop use if the dog pants, appears restless, cannot reposition itself or seems too warm.
- Ask a veterinarian about pain, circulation, temperature sensitivity or other health issues before relying on heat for comfort.
Heat is an optional comfort feature, not a treatment for arthritis or unexplained pain.

Compare the main sleeping setups
| Setup | When it may fit | Access considerations | Checks before use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-entry supportive dog bed | A dog needs its own resting place and has difficulty stepping over tall edges | Front opening, recessed design or low edge reduces climbing | Stable support, enough room for the dog’s posture, washable cover and non-slip surroundings |
| Raised human bed with ramp or stairs | A dog continues to sleep with its owner and can use an access aid safely | Ramp or steps must stay secure and allow controlled ascent and descent | Traction, clear turning space, supervised practice and a safe alternative if the dog cannot manage the aid |
| Either setup on non-slip flooring | The surrounding floor is smooth or the dog slips while approaching or rising | Mat or rug covers the route, not only the bed’s base | Flat edges, secure backing and continued grip after cleaning |
These options address different problems. A ramp does not make a high bed appropriate if the dog cannot use the ramp, and a thick mattress does not solve a slippery approach. Choose the change that removes the specific obstacle you observed.
Test the arrangement and troubleshoot failures
Give the dog several calm opportunities to use the revised setup while you watch from nearby. Compare entry, turning, settling, rising and exit with the previous arrangement. A change is useful when movement looks more confident and the dog voluntarily returns to the bed; it is not useful merely because the bed feels soft to a person.
- The bed slides: Add a secure non-slip mat beneath it and extend traction along the approach.
- The dog avoids the bed: Check for heat retention, a strong odor, noisy or unstable materials, an awkward edge or a location exposed to drafts.
- The dog gets in but struggles to leave: Lower the exit, clear the route and observe whether rising itself is difficult.
- The cushion flattens or shifts: Reassess support and stability rather than adding loose layers that could bunch under the dog.
- The dog cannot use a ramp or stairs: Do not keep practicing unsupervised; offer a low floor bed and seek veterinary advice about mobility.
Recheck the setup after laundering, rearranging furniture or a change in the dog’s condition. Traction, shape and access can change even when the bed itself has not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical setup sequence
- Observe for a full day. Record the dog’s preferred sleeping posture, how often it changes position and where entry or exit becomes awkward.
- Remove the immediate hazard. Add traction if the dog slips, clear obstructions and move the bed away from drafts.
- Match the access level. Choose a low or recessed entry for a floor bed, or install a secure ramp or stairs only if the dog can use them safely.
- Match support to posture. Provide an open surface for a dog that stretches out; consider an edge for a dog that curls or rests its head, while avoiding an all-around barrier that limits entry.
- Check temperature. Avoid heat-trapping placement in warm conditions. If using a heated product, supervise and ensure the dog can move away.
- Test cleanability. Confirm that the cover and, ideally, the bed itself can be cleaned and dried thoroughly.
- Reassess movement. Watch the dog enter, lie down, rise and leave after the change. Keep the setup only if those movements are easier and more confident.
When a more comfortable bed is not enough
VCA describes osteoarthritis as a condition managed with veterinary care and broader lifestyle changes, with comfort and function as goals. A bed change should not delay an examination when mobility or rest has changed. (VCA)
Arrange veterinary advice for these patterns
- New or persistent stiffness, pain or reluctance to move
- Difficulty standing, walking, climbing or using a ramp
- A sudden change in sleeping position or repeated inability to settle
- Repeated slipping, falling or becoming stuck at the bed’s edge
- Signs that heat or a new bed makes the dog distressed rather than comfortable
Bring observations or a short video of the dog approaching, entering and leaving the bed. That information can help a veterinarian distinguish an access problem from a broader mobility or pain issue. Bedding remains one part of a home-comfort plan, not a diagnosis.

- The dog can enter and leave without jumping, catching a paw or climbing over an unnecessarily high edge.
- The sleeping area supports the dog’s preferred posture and leaves room to turn.
- The bed stays in place while the dog approaches, lies down and rises.
- A non-slip mat or rug covers the route on slippery flooring.
- The location is free of drafts but does not trap excessive heat.
- The cover and bedding can be cleaned and dried thoroughly.
- Any heated feature is supervised, and the dog can move away from it.
- Changes in pain, stiffness or mobility have been discussed with a veterinarian.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is memory foam always the best bed for a dog with arthritis?
No. CARE and VCA identify memory foam or orthopedic construction as options, but PetMD notes that size, support needs and sleeping posture matter. Choose a stable, supportive bed the dog can enter and leave easily; the word “orthopedic” is not a guarantee.

Should a dog with stiff joints use a bed with bolsters?
A bolster may help a dog that curls up or rests its head, but four high sides can make entry difficult. Prefer a front opening, recessed center or low edge when stepping over a barrier is hard.
Is a ramp safer than letting my dog jump onto my bed?
A secure ramp or steps may make access easier for a dog that continues to sleep on a raised human bed. Introduce it calmly, supervise use and provide a low floor bed if the dog cannot climb or descend confidently.
Where should an arthritis-friendly bed go?
CARE recommends a warm, non-drafty location. Also keep the route clear and use non-slip flooring. In warm climates, avoid materials or placement that retain excessive heat, and make sure the dog can leave the warm area.

How often should a dog bed be cleaned?
The key requirement is that bedding remain clean and dry. Follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions, dry the cover and insert thoroughly, clean accidents promptly and inspect for dampness, odor, damage or loss of support.
Are heated beds safe for dogs with limited mobility?
They require supervision. The AKC warns that a dog unable to move away may overheat or suffer burns. Stop if the dog pants or seems restless, ensure an easy exit and ask a veterinarian about heat, pain or circulation concerns.
When should a bed change be followed by a veterinary visit?
Seek veterinary advice for new or persistent pain, stiffness, trouble standing or walking, repeated slipping, sudden sleep changes, inability to settle or difficulty using a ramp. A bed can improve comfort but cannot identify or treat the cause.
The Bottom Line
Make the bed easier to use, not merely softer: match support and shape to your dog’s posture, choose a low or recessed entry when mobility is limited, add traction around the route, control heat and keep every layer clean and dry. Watch the dog use the setup. If pain, stiffness or difficulty moving persists, involve a veterinarian.
