Before your kitten arrives, prepare a quiet starter room, set out the basics for eating, sleeping, and using the litter box, and remove hazards the kitten could chew, swallow, or get trapped in. Let the kitten settle in that home base before gradually opening the rest of the house.
Set up a quiet starter room
Choose a calm room where the kitten can settle without having to explore the whole home at once. The ASPCA recommends creating a home base with food and water bowls, a litter box, toys, and treats; give the kitten access to additional rooms gradually as it becomes comfortable. There is no need to follow a fixed timetable: let the kitten’s comfort guide the pace.
Before bringing a new cat home, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises preparing places to eat, sleep, and eliminate. A bed or other comfortable resting spot can provide a place to sleep, while the other essentials should be ready before arrival.
Gather the essentials before arrival
- Litter box and litter: Set them up in an accessible place in the starter room.
- Food and water bowls: Have both ready. Ask your veterinarian which food is appropriate for your kitten.
- Scratching material: Provide an appropriate place to scratch, such as a scratching post.
- Toys: Include safe toys for play and enrichment.
- A comfortable resting place: Make sure the kitten has somewhere quiet to sleep.
These are practical categories, not recommendations for particular brands, sizes, or designs. The AVMA lists a litter box, litter, bowls, toys, and scratching material among the items to prepare.

Kitten-proof the home at floor level
Get down to the kitten’s level and look for things it could mouth, swallow, climb, or become caught in. The ASPCA recommends checking the home from a pet’s perspective and securing hazards before the kitten arrives.
- Pick up small objects: Remove hair ties, rubber bands, and other small items a curious kitten might swallow.
- Secure cords and strings: Keep electrical cords and dangling blind or curtain cords out of reach.
- Lock away dangerous products: Store medicines, cleaning products, trash, and pest-control substances where the kitten cannot access them. Close cabinets and consider child-proof locks if needed.
- Check plants: Remove poisonous houseplants from the kitten’s reach or from the home.
- Check windows: Fit secure screens in any window that will be opened.
- Block risky gaps: Close off small spaces where a kitten could become stuck, and look for poison traps that may have been left by a previous occupant.
Plan for resident cats and veterinary care
If you already have cats, keep the newcomer separated until a veterinarian has examined it and it has received necessary vaccines, as advised by the AVMA’s Feline Panleukopenia guidance. Ask your veterinarian about the kitten’s health, preventive care, and when it is appropriate to begin introductions. Do not rely on a generic introduction schedule when the newcomer’s health or infection risk is uncertain.

Arrange veterinary care as part of getting ready. A veterinarian can assess the kitten and help determine a diet suited to its age, activity level, and health, according to the ASPCA’s General Cat Care guidance. Confirm the kitten’s individual vaccine schedule and needs with the veterinarian.

Final check before the kitten comes home
- The starter room has food and water bowls, litter, a litter box, toys, scratching material, and a comfortable resting place.
- Small objects, medicines, cleaning supplies, trash, and pest-control products are inaccessible.
- Plants have been checked, cords are secured, and openable windows have secure screens.
- Potentially trapping gaps and any leftover poison traps have been addressed.
- If other cats live in the home, you have a plan to keep the newcomer separate while you consult a veterinarian.
