Prepare one quiet room, secure the home and exits, and have basic supplies ready before your adopted Chihuahua-Dachshund mix arrives. Start the dog in that home base, widen access as they settle, and arrange a veterinary exam soon after adoption. Let the individual dog’s age, health, history, and behavior—not the mix label—guide your choices.
Before your adopted dog arrives
Set up a quiet home base
Choose a calm room where your dog can rest and eat without being approached constantly. Set out a bed or other resting place, food and water bowls, and familiar items if the rescue can provide them. Have a collar, leash, and ID tag ready. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Selecting a Pet Dog guide recommends preparing supplies and arranging an initial veterinary exam.

Dog-proof from floor level
Look around from the height of a small dog. Pick up coins, hair ties, small toys, and anything else that could be swallowed. Secure electrical cords, and store medications, cleaning products, chemicals, and other hazards out of reach. The ASPCA home-preparation checklist highlights the risk of accessible small objects; the ASPCA also advises securing cords and hazards when moving with a pet.

Secure exits and outdoor access
Check doors, gates, windows, and the yard for openings or other escape routes. Put away accessible pest-control traps and poisons. A frightened dog in a new place may bolt, so supervise outdoor time and take particular care during door transitions. Keep exits controlled while the dog gets used to the home. Plan for furniture and stairs
Dachshunds are among the breeds commonly affected by intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a spinal condition. Cornell advises minimizing time on stairs and limiting repeated jumping on and off beds, sofas, or decks. If your dog is likely to jump on furniture, consider arranging the room to reduce those jumps or using stable pet steps or a ramp. These are activity modifications, not a guarantee against IVDD or a treatment; ask your veterinarian what suits your dog’s build and health. Cornell’s IVDD guidance says, “Keep your dog trim and fit.”
Collect records and book a veterinary exam
Ask the shelter or rescue for available medical and vaccination records, and schedule a veterinary exam soon after arrival. Bring the records and any information the rescue has about the dog’s age, health, prior care, and current needs. A veterinarian can help determine whether the dog needs specific activity restrictions or other follow-up.

How to help your dog settle in
Start in one room
Bring your dog first to the quiet, secure home-base room rather than giving an unrestricted tour of the house. Keep water available, let the dog rest, and control access to doors and exits. Familiar bedding or other items from the rescue may help if available.

When the dog appears comfortable, offer access to other rooms gradually. Supervise around children and other animals, and make sure the dog can retreat to a quiet place. A new home is unfamiliar; a gradual transition gives you a chance to notice what unsettles or interests this particular dog.

Make introductions based on what is known about this dog
Ask the rescue what it knows about the dog’s history and behavior, including how the dog has responded to people and other animals. Use that information to plan introductions calmly and with supervision. A Chihuahua-Dachshund label does not establish an individual dog’s temperament or predict whether they will bite; the AVMA’s dog-bite prevention guidance emphasizes individual history and behavior.

A ramp or pet steps may be useful if they let your dog reach furniture without repeatedly jumping. Choose based on the route and furniture, stability, the dog’s size and mobility, and whether the dog is comfortable using it. Position the item so it does not create a new obstacle or slipping hazard, and supervise while the dog learns. Cornell recommends ramps or steps as ways to reduce jumping for dogs at risk of IVDD; it does not identify a particular product or brand as best.

Dachshund ancestry makes sensible home setup worth discussing with your veterinarian, but the mix label alone cannot establish this dog’s individual risk. Cornell relays an estimate from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons that 40 to 75 percent of IVDD cases involve Dachshunds; the publication year for that estimate is not stated on Cornell’s page. It is not a probability for every Dachshund mix.
